The Voice of the NCAA Tournament Passes Away

I had a friend in college named Mo who had an odd collection. At a time before the DVR made recording a television program simply a click of a button, Mo had every post-NCAA Tournament “One Shining Moment” video on a VCR cassette tape in his dorm room, each labeled with the corresponding year. It was his most proud collection and he would watch them every year as the college season began. I think he even shed a tear once or twice. I thought of Mo last night when I heard that the voice of “One Shining Moment”, Teddy Pendergrass passed away. Pendergrass was not the original singer of the CBS classic tune, but he sang it in the years we like most around here, 1994-1999. In addition to that performance, Pendergrass had a large array of hits that your parents probably used during their nights of romance, which may not be something you really want to think about. Pendergrass was the lead singer for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, with their current best known hit likely being “If You Dont Know.”

In honor of his death, my two favorite works of Teddy P, his 1998 Kentucky Championship version of “One Shining Moment”:

and the 1996 version:
