So the Cats open the season against the Virginia Military Institute. When I think of VMI, I think of a couple of things. First, the Supreme Court case that ruled (7-1) that public universities cannot keep out women in a case involving VMI and female cadets in 1996. If you go to law school (and feel free not to), you will likely read that case and ignore it until the final exam. Also, VMI has been the home of many American military generals, most famously George Marshall of the Marshall Plan (and what a plan it was), who helped start a new wave of giving that made VMI a much more prestigious school academically.
So while those were the tidbits that made VMI famous to me, I did not know anything about possibly the most famous and prestigious alumnus ever, Fred Willard. Willard, a comedic actor who produces GREAT performance after GREAT performance, graduated from VMI and is a proud cadet, a trait that certainly helped for his role in “Best in Show.” Willard makes me laugh at virtually every moment he is on a screen and his roles (while occasionally hitting a dud) are universally the best parts of nearly every move that he is in.
So with the Cats having to face the power of Fred Willard, it made me wonder….who is a comedic actor like Willard, not top billing but producing consistently great performances, that the Cats can get to counter his force? Any ideas?
