Rick Pitino can say what he wants – and who can blame him for trying to make his 15 seconds in the media last – but the fact of the matter is the SEC is no second rate league. Sure, Pitino was talking about basketball where the SEC has struggled as of late – but even in hoops, the SEC made up 1/4 of the elite eight and 1/4 of the final four. But I get it, he’s trying to tweak a rival. Go for it, no big deal.
But I bring this up because this is a time when the SEC as a whole should be applauded. In the three major college sports – football, basketball and baseball – the SEC was the only league to send a team to each of those sports celebrated post season events. In other words, the SEC was the only conference to have a team in the BCS National Championship, the Final Four, and the College World Series. As you well know, Auburn won the BCS Title, Kentucky made the trip to the final four, and the SEC makes up 3 of the 8 teams in the CWS with Florida, South Carolina and Vanderbilt all making the trip to Omaha.
A pretty cool feat for a second rate league, don’t you think?
