Well the story of the night here in the Bluegrass was the launching of the Rocket, Roger Clemens out of the Hall of Fame hemisphere into Applebee’s Park. The city was abuzz (although not quite as abuzz as Pedro Gomes (who looks suspiciously like Taylor Hicks) claimed when he mentioned that it was as big as a “UK final 4 game”) as Clemens helped pack the Lexington Legends stadium for his 3 innings of work. The telecast was beamed live on ESPN, where the announcers spent over an hour simply narrating Clemens, pitch by pitch, and making bad analogies to horse racing. (i.e. “since he is in Lexington, we should say that Roger is “in the gate” towards a Major league comeback”).
All in all, I found the whole scenario quite interesting. It is always great to have a legend in Lexington, especially one who can play for a team called the Legends. Clemens went ahead and beaned a guy, which has to make that kid’s life. And Lexington got a ton of publicity for no apparent reason. As for Roger himself, he looked fat to me, but then again an announcer said it was the best shape Roger has been in for five years….which may say just how bad a shape he was in before. Clemens through the heat and gave the fans what they wanted…..so it was a success.
As for who won…..who cares? Its baseball.
