The Pride of Ames, Harrison Barnes, Gets a Cal Visit

Its Tuesday at noon….do you know where your Coach is? Well if you guessed Ames, Iowa to visit Harrison Barnes, then you sir are correct. Calipari was scheduled to leave New York last night and head to the great state of Iowa to visit 2010 wing man extraordinare, Harrison Barnes. You may remember Barnes as the super-talent that Billy Gillispie recruited hard in the Class of 2010 and that he held out hope could be part of a Mega Class in recruiting that year. Over time, Barnes’ interest in Kentucky slipped and when Duke came calling, they became the presumptive leader. But now Barnes sees Calipari and the Cats are back in and the sell job is on for the Big Blue. Barnes is a perfect fit for Calipari’s system and his ability to take players off the dribble makes him a likely star next season.

Barnes lives in Ames, Iowa, home of the Iowa State Cyclones and a stop on the Matt and Turkey Hunter world tour in 2004. During our four week trip across America, we spent a night in Ames, which led to an evening of fun in which we played pool with a guy who kept telling us that we picked the wrong night to arrive (“you should have been here last night…..Girls Gone Wild was here”) and me spending most of my time asking if anyone had seen Marcus Fizer or Jamal Tinsley anywhere. Its an environment that says college town, but feels more like cornshuckVille. I expect Calipari will have a hard time finding good linguini there, so his trip will be short, but hopefully productive.
