The Post That You Knew Was Coming

When Joe B. Hall and Sam Bowie join forces again to fight for all things blue and white, they’re going to be faced with a pleasantly difficult decision.  They’ve been handed eight NBA players whose resumes range from established star to savvy veteran to future superstar and now must find a way to put together a starting five for their battle with the Dominican Republic.  The roster is loaded at point guard and maybe a little thin in the frontcourt, especially considering that should be the strong suit of the Dominicans.

Here are the players they have to work with:

Eric Bledsoe
Keith Bogans
DeMarcus Cousins
Jodie Meeks
Nazr Mohammed
Tayshaun Prince
Rajon Rondo
John Wall

So, you know how this works.  Pick your starting five and make the case for why you’re the smartest person in the comments section.  I’m a big fan of versatility on the bench and the option of changing the lineup drastically as the game goes on, so I’m going with Rondo-Wall-Meeks-Cousins-Mohammed.  Do better than me below.  And that’s not an innuendo either.

PG – Rondo (Wall, speed for speed)

SG – Meeks (Bledsoe is your other shooter)

    SF – Bogans

    PF – Prince

C – Cousins (Mohammed and Cousins not on the floor together to protect foul trouble issues.)

    Prince – pf
    Mohammed – c

    Bench:

Easy picks. Journeymen in the game, pups off the bench with energy. In my opinion, though, you need P-Pat to come back up Tayshaun.

Agree with beisner. #3 must be an old guy. Players in the last twenty years jump higher, run faster and have the same fundamentals as their predecessors. But people want to compare old slow white guys to physical specimens that are built like machines. Mash, Issel and maybe Bowie, but Id take Cousins, Rondo and Meeks with Mash at the 3.

5 got it right, because Prince adds that extra height you say we are short of….. but i think you may only be able to play one big man at a time so you can substitute them in and out and have a big man on the floor at all times.

(20.) Rondo has done so much in his career that he DESERVES a start in a game like this, for sure. But that doesn’t mean that he steps on the court with this PARTICULAR group and does better than Wall. You do remember this past All-Star weekend when Wall and Cousins got back together again, right? Those two go together.

Wall and rondo create the greatest back court in history, put Tayshaun at the 3 spot and be the swing man, then let Mohammed and cousins dominate the paint. Greatest starting 5 ever put together and yes that includes all dream teams.

rondo, wall, bogans, ppat, cousins. with lack of height you need 2 solid rebounders. this leaves Princ Nazr and Bled-Bled on the bench. That still gives some height in various rotations or even foul trouble. With the games of Wall and Rondo so similar I may swap Bledsoe for wall in the starting rotation, but I want to see them both on the court.

You have to give the edge to guys with championships. So Nazr (1998 college champ) Prince (NBA Champ) and Rondo (NBA Champ) have to start. You fill out the other two based on seniority and need, so Meeks and Bogans. Sorry young guys, but you’re off the bench!

  38. Mark W

At the point you would have to put the best pg in the NBA… Rajon Rondo would start at PG
John Wall should start at the 2 guard spot, he could take turns with Rondo running plays some, also without the responsibility of running the point, Wall could attack the basket relentlessly, he could score, look for open players, and start the fast break.
Rondo and Wall are good 3 point shooters, thats where Jodie Meeks comes in. Id start him at the 3, but he would more or less be another 2 guard, which would complete my 3 guard backcourt lineup ( Rondo,Wall, Meeks) While Rondo and Wall are attacking, Meeks would certainly be able to sneak off to the 3 point line and bury countless shots while his teammate would have to double either Wall or Rondo because of there attacking ability.
This team would be a quick, speedy, running team which would include starting Tayshaun Prince at the 4. He is 6-8 235ish, and has enough size to post up his defender and score on him, but would also give his defender fits by stepping out on the perimeter and hitting 3s, attacking the basket, or setting up Meeks by passing back out to him if a double comes, he is also prob quicker than anyone who would guard him and would run his defender in the ground, also defensively Princes quickness, long arms, and on the ball defense would shut down the opposing player. Finally, we need a big inside bruiser type post man. Someone who can score, rebound, and just punish the opposing player offensively and defensively. At Center I pick 6-11 265 pound Demarcus Cousins… His presence inside would dominate the paint. The Dominican Republic doesn’t have a chance.

Experience / Seniority has no place in a single game. It’s all about ability.

PG – Wall(he’s on a different level than Rondo, whether when Rondo wore blue or when he won the ring in the NBA. As a Kentucky fan first it’s painfully obvious how ridiculous NBA fans are about the ring debates. Ability isn’t affected by how much bling you have)

SG – Bogans(a big body, and a great shooter)

SF – Meeks(the only really, really dangerous scorer of the bunch aside from maybe Bledsoe, who is too short to play 3)

    PF – Prince(see SF)

C – Cousins. Was there any doubt?

Rondo dishing the ball to Wall who can attack from the wing, Meeks with perimeter shooting. Prince with length and matchup problem for other teams 4 man, and Cousins down low to throw elbows. Wish we could have gotten Patrick Sparks to suit up for this one.

    2:09 pm July 28, 2011 Permalink

Since you’ve got little time to gel, I’d play people in their natural position. But this team lacks front court depth, so you have to balance the two.

Pg – Rondo (Best PG in the game)
SG – Bogans (Best SG on best regular season time)
    SF – Prince (Natural position)
    PF – Nazr
    C – Cousins

Once Cousins gets into foul trouble, insert Wall into the 2 and slide up. Meeks / Bledsoe provide depth at wing position.

Two great threads in 1 day, you all are out doing yourselves.
Since you are undersized you have to beat them with speed, execution, and shooting.
So it’s pretty easy to see that has to put Rondo, Wall, Meeks, Prince, and Cousins on the floor. Bledsoe can rotate through the point or the 2 guard. Bogans the 2 or the 3. Cousins can slide to the four when Nazr comes in if necessary. If Pat would have played it would have made the rotation much simpler.

If lanes start opening up for drives, bring Wall in for Meeks.
If fouls start for either Nazr or Cuz, then bring in Tayshawn for one and Wall in for Bogans (since driving lanes should open with one of the big guys coming out).

You basically have better defense with Bogans, Nazr, and Tayshaun.
You have offensive punch with Meeks and Boogie (when he’s on).
And you have slashing guards with Rondo, Wall and Bledsoe.
