“The Play”

In what might have been the most important play in the Joker Phillips coaching era, Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart drew up a 2-point conversion play in OT to snag the win on the road against Kentucky. The trick play was nothing short of a gutsy call by Taggart. Try not to choke on your morning coffee as you watch the play unfold once again…

Just saw it as the #4 play on sports center. It wasn’t even executed well the throwback was terrible and they pretty much just showe uk a picture of the play on how bad the lateral was with how far backward it went. Pretty much pathetic that UK wasn’t able to stop it. FIRE JOKER AND THE WHOLE COACHING STAFF.

I was one of the ones wanting Joker fired after last season. I knew he wouldn’t be able to turn it around, so why not cut the losses, and hire a new coach to rebuild? Why should the fans have to endure another bad year, just to say “we gave Joker three years”? If you know its not working, then change it. Barnhart and Joker need to be fired, and the UK Board of Trustess need to make that happen. Barnhart is the problem as well, If he can’t see there is a problem, then he needs to go elsewhere.

Kentucky is poorly prepared by a coaching staff that thinks it is better than it is. The defense cant line up right after how many days of practice and in the third game??? Offensive coordinator cant even get the first play off in overtime without a penalty??? There is talent on the team just finding coaches who see it and do something with it, clearly this bunch has vision issues.

Speaking of vision issues exactly how many of Matt Jone’s LOCKS actually win? Even a Blind Pig can find a corn cob on the ground eventually!!!

As many members of BBN pointed out last night, Mitch Brainfart should never have promoted Joker to Head Coach. However, take a second or two to think about exactly how stupid the decision was. As the Offensive Coordinator under Rich Brooks, Joker’s offense ranked #93 & #103 nationally in total offense. He was an awful OC who frequently called the wrong plays. What responsible Athletic Director at an SEC school would promote a guy like Joker to HC? Joker has no idea what he is doing and hasn’t from Day 1. He’s managed to reverse all of the positive gains realized from Rich Brooks’s accomplishments in record time. Joker apologists: Do you morons still believe we should give Joker more time? Maybe he can find a way to lose to everyone on the schedule.

Mel No I don’t think it’s big time. But what he did in the SEC last year and the year before was a lot more big time than what we have seen since Bryant and one Curci year. He beat who was on the schedule for the Orange Bowl, that’s all. He is the most qualified coach that would be POSSIBLE to coach us. He’s a jerk for sure but so are Saban, Spurrier, or most any really good football coach.

I understand the desire to get Joker fired. But if you want Mitch fired just because of the football team’s lack of success you are barking up the wrong tree. Mitch has made EVERY sports program better at Kentucky since he’s been here, football is the only exception. Think about our women’s basketball, our tennis, our baseball. All of a sudden UK is becoming a powerhouse in several sports. Mitch has done an excellent job (besides football). Let him replace Joker this year, see who he hires before you call for his head.

That’s mainly the problem we face and the impitious for calling for Mitch’s position. We as alumni and paying fans are spending significant sums of money per anum, which raises very year, for one of two sports.
I won’t spend the time to rehash the selection mistakes/misques he has made. I will present an argument that I am tired of spending money for a program I want to see succeed, only I have that money siphoned to another program I could care less about, all for the while the one I AM PAYING FOR languishes in the putrid facilities they have. I don’t have anything against women’s underwater basket weaving being top ten, nor do I have a problem spending revenue generated from the two big teams ONCE they have been provided for as they need to be to be competitive.
Mitch needs to go because he has been fleecing our dear programs for long enough.

That play didn’t lose the game, it was every other UK screw up plus the planning or lack thereof before kick off that lost the game.

Some people just aren’t meant to be in charge & one of those people is Joker. From Joker body of work so far, one must question his intelligence, ability to process information, ability to reason, and over all ability to lead. A person can say all the right things & he & everyone can want it for him, but if that person doesn’t have the attributes & can’t deliver, then that person just can’t deliver & nothing is ever going to change that fact.

If Joker is a true die hard wants what is best for the UK football program, then he would be a man, admit his weaknesses, admit he isn’t the person to be UK coach, and resign. Joker is going to get fired anyway, this way he can go out on his own terms decided by his own fate & leave at least with a little dignity.

The only thing the Tennessee win did was delay the inevitable & put us even further behind. Sometimes when you think you’re winning, you’re really still losing.

So much damage has been done; if UK wants to fix the coaching thing, then they are going to have to throw so much money at a big enough name coach (no matter the conditions at UK) that he can’t say no. Literally an offer he can’t refuse !! This is a slide a blank check across the table coach fill in the amount it will take moment. Barnhart needs to find an ACE & build a hand around it.

33 stupid comment. Mitch treated Guy Morris horribly after he pulled a near miracle his one year as coach. He hired Phillips as a head coach when he eas a terrible offensive ooordinator. His idea of daring are 3 yard third and seven passing calls and punting on UT’s 37 on fourth down in the fourth quarter while losing. He had Randle Cobb on that team to boot. Barnhart SUCKS at football and basketball. He practically had to have his arm held behind his back to hire Cal.

Yes, Mitch HAS done a very good job w/ the non-revenue sports at UK. But in the two sports that matter most he gets a D-. First, he let Tubby turn the top bball program in the country into a mediocre one that could not compete for top talent. Then he hired a total baffoon to replace him. I give him no credit for hiring Cal.

In football, first he refuses to pay a coach that was overachieving (Morris) and replaces him w/ a has-been (Brooks). Brooks actually did ok to UK standards – but was NEVER competitive in the SEC, so ultimately a failure. Then he replaces him w/ Joker who had never distinguished himself as an assistant. Joker can’t even succeeed on the low road approach perfected by Brooks.. beat a bunch of second tier teams to get bowl eligible.

And on facilities… he’s been the worst in the SEC and all he can do is blame others. Its HIS job to get the facilities built – fund raising, lobbying, rallying public support. He’s done NONE of this. Honestly, Mitch is the problem and needs to go.

Pretty sure everyone has the same opinion. That view is that UK Football needs a change. Nothing will benefit from firing Joker right now (since we cannot hire a great coach effectively 3 games into season). I do think Joker is not the man for the Head Coaching job, but still think we gain nothing by promoting the other idiots behind him. Current Offense and Defense Coordinators are as ridiculous behind the strategy of calling of plays in key moments as Joker is.
Its a problem when ESPN shows Joker on the sideline yelling furiously at the OC and DC about something they did or didnt do. Who’s fault is it more when they make a bad call or forget an assignment? I blame Joker for not having a handle on every assistant. Its all about discipline. When your players respect you, they listen to you. When you let them dance on the sideline down 17-0 then their heads are not in the game. Joker has too many responsibilities that he obviously cant handle so he needs to be demoted at the end of the season.
We all know that will never happen. We all want him fired but Mitch wont fire him, we would be lucky for him to just be demoted.

38 anyone who thinks Barnhart has done a good job is stupid. I’m being obective. Just going with the facts. Morris was treated badly from Barnhart because he wanted Brooks from the start. I liked Brooks and he did a good job, after he banged his head against the wall and tried to make a 300 pound QB an option QB when he possessed a cannon throwing arm. But Morris deserved to coach UK after the season he had. If LSU doesn’t get lucky we win 9 games that year if I am not mistaken. Joker should have been fired after last year. Mitch is stubborn and proud and that’s a bad combination. I don’t want to fire him, just yet, but this next hire in football will make or break him. He better throw a hail mary and hire Petrino.

He kept Tubby too long and then hired Billy Clyde in basketball. The jury is in and he is ruled mediocre in the two biggest sports.

Mitch is at fault. How hard is it to hire a great baseball, soccer,or tennis coach compared with hiring a great mens basketball or football coach? Once Billy Clyde happened I knew Mitch had messed up. I don’t see BCG being the type of guy who is going to change. He is who he is. To me that means he’s been the way he is all along. Mitch should have known how BCG was. It was his job to find out. That hire was a HUGE mistake. BCG was in NO WAY prepared to coach at UK. Hell, I think Calipari WANTED the UK job and if the janitor was the AD, they could’ve hired Calipari. I don’t think it was Mitch’s expertise and AD prowess that brought Cal to town. The legend and empire that is UK basketball made Cal WANT to come. I suppose Mitch thought Joker would/could build on the success the football team experienced at the end of Rich Brook’s time as coach. Maybe that wasn’t a crazy thought at the time. We all hoped that was the case. But BCG and Joker are all on Mitch. Too bad his biggest mistakes were with the two biggest programs he was hired to oversee.

Every assistant wants to prove they can do the job. When given the opportunity those with the talent, mindset, strength, and discipline will always succeed. JOKER has yet to move forward since his hiring. All we hear is “Give him another year or two”. What is wrong in saying that is the fact that the talented athletes will not be here in a year or two. Use them while you have them in uniform. When the coaches do not know how to use the players they have, then it is not the player’s fault for a dropped pass or fumble or non-completion when that player was put in the game for the first time in a key moment and was told to get it done.
The coaches were all assembled based on friendships and not ability. Joker or Mitch for that matter did not fly out somewhere looking for the best available guy for the assistant whatever job. He hired some easy hire of a guy. Mitch probably could careless if we win 1 or 10 games because he is getting the revenue. He does not want to build and expand on the football stadium, equipment, or hire an expensive coach…..when we have the RUPP renovation around the corner. Mitch is thinking basketball not football. Basketball is year round in the media (with a top notch coach like Calipari) while football is only in the fall season. No one cares about the football practices but must know what color shirt or sweatpants the freshmen recruits are wearing at the first basketball practice.

The Rank of our incoming recruiting class means nothing when the coaches who plan around those players do not effectively use them. When you have star WR’s (not saying we do), Joker would rather run the ball. When we have star RB’s (not saying we do), Joker would rather pass the ball.
It is those key moments like 2nd and 8 that leads up to the 3rd and 3. If you do not call the right plays then you are setting yourself up to be behind in the game. Your defense must be good to be close…which right now we lack defense. Coming into this WKU game, everyone said UK had bad defense and WKU had good offense, and that WKU had bad defense and UK had good offense. Well that didn’t look apparent because JOKER did not plan the right plays in every key moment.

There is a whole lot more to deserving a job than being a nice guy.

Recruiting rank means quite a bit. Part of doing well means having talent. No talented player will want to come here now. In state recruits will start to look elsewhere. We laud our basketball recruiting classes, so when football comes around we can’t just say they mean nothing. Besides, if recruiting rank didn’t matter he still wouldn’t be getting the job done. We need to be at least top 2 in the state. He inherited he program, and he killed whatever momentum we had going. Time to start over.

What has he done to show he still deserves another year? Do we let him kill our program to the point we can’t beat Samford? 2-10 is as bad as it can get almost.

    70. When your Head Coach is content with matching WKU (see his post game comments) that says a lot. He isn’t striving to go forward. He acts like this is Conference USA. He talks up his opponents when we lose in a similar manner BCG did. We are sick of hearing bull about how this is a good football team that just needs to make more plays, or just met up with a really competitive team.

We have to send a message to Mitch that we are unsatisfied with the product. Then maybe we will see change.

The fans definitely help a team. I loved looking in the stands yesterday with 5:30 left in the 4th qtr, we were down 7 and WKU just got the ball. All I saw was “fans” leaving while we still had a chance to stop them and score (WHICH WE DID). UK fans are idiots, they don’t understand football at all.
Secondly, no recruiting class rank does not mean that much. Some of UK’s best players in recent history were TWO STAR PLAYERS (Woodyard, Lindley, Trevathan, Pryor, etc.) These sites cannot accurately grade most football players because there are soooooooooooo many of them, plus they don’t play AAU in the off season like basketball players. We might be 2-10 this season but next season I can guarantee you a bowl.

Common Sense – If JOKER (name is fitting) gives complete freedom to the OC and DC, who is running the team? What is JOKER doing on the sideline? All I saw him do was yell at both of them for making stupid plays or yelling at them to yell at their player who messed up. Some coaches have INSTINCT on what plays to run and tell the OC or DC to use this play if not use this play, etc. When you dont have INSTINCT you only have HOPE. Joker doesn’t win games on HOPE you win it on EXECUTION of said plays (JOKER’s fault for not disciplining players during practice so they dont mess up game time and know how to do the play in their sleep).

Also, Common Sense, get some common sense. In the real world, if you don’t do your job adequately you get fired. Joker hasn’t shown he is doing his job adequately. He brought Minter in. It is his job to manage the team, and if he doesn’t like the plays being called by the OC and DC, he should step in and do something.

Yes, Joker has some voice in play calling but ppl are talking like every play is called by him which is incredibly unrealistic.

I do not understand why he’s not fired now. Why would we wait until the end of the season to bring in a new guy, so he has no time to recruit. We have 1 more win on our schedule(and after last night that’s not a guarantee.) Florida put up 500 yards on UT, if i did my math correctly that means theyll put up around 750 on us, for around 80 points. Then when Spurrier comes to town, OH MY GOODNESS. I have no idea what the record for most points scored is, but the announcers will bring it up some time in the 3rd quarter.

Because this is like a real world job? This isn’t the NFL where you can buy players and turn your team around in a season. College football coaches need at least 4 years, MINIMUM. Hold on, I already no your excuse…..”he was a coach in waiting”….guess what, that doesn’t f’ing matter. Ask anyone that deals with football and they will tell you the same (i.e. Jeremy Jarmon). So I will judge Joker based on how they finish this year and how they play next season.

    75. They are 4th in the Sunbelt conference. Not that good. We paid them $500,000. This was supposed to be an easy win. They aren’t Bama, or even UT or even Miss. St. If we played in the Sunbelt conference, this wouldn’t be as bad. But we don’t. We play against even better competition.

And maybe the fans would have stayed if the team had come out ready to play (which they didn’t.)

He will not have a next season, and he doesn’t deserve it. He hasn’t done anything to show we are moving forward. No better recruiting, a loss in win percentage, losing his gimme games. Nothing shows that with another year things will be moving forward.

Its not that I dislike Joker, but its that he seriously praises every team for beating us than he does for hating on his team’s mistakes. Listen to NFL coaches’ postgame remarks after losing. They all take responsibility for it even if it was a player’s fault for a fumble or something. Why??? Because it wasnt that last play where you lost the game but possibily a play in the 1st qtr or whatever. Its the coaches game to win until its 00:00 on the clock.

I can understand why Joker kicked the extra point in OT, but seriously everyone knew Taggert was going for the win. Why trade scores when you can surpise right away. Joker would have never done that if the order of who got ball first was made. Joker seems to lack that extra horsepower we all crave…and honestly seems like why we all hate him now. If we heard enthusiasm from him like we will win vs FL or this season isnt over because we will win the next 3 in a row kind of talk…then it would rally the fans….but what are we hearing? We are hearing we missed a few passes (ok well fix that) we missed a few tackles (discpine the defense then til they learn) we missed a ___ he has all excuses and not enough answers.

Pretty sure preseason Matt said UK would win 4 games or more…. Wasn’t there a bet made by some journalist for $1000 on UK under 4 wins? Yeh well WKU was supposed to be one of those easy 4 wins….not anymore looks like 2 win season

Joker was the head recruiter for years under Brooks. We kept hearing that each new recruiting class was getting bigger and faster and we were finally getting up to SEC standards. Joker was head coach in waiting for the final two years of Brooks’s tenure. This is total garbage about how he needs 4 years to get his ‘system’ or his ‘players’ in to be effective. Common Sense is either Joker himself or just a pure apologist.

It is proof to me we can be at least a decent program. I don’t have the answers for that. Look all I am asking is that we are not an embarrassment and that we compete. I think most fans get that being on the level of the top SEC teams is a longshot. But to just have a chance and to not be a joke shouldn’t be so difficult. So someone needs to make the changes. Why can’t Cal coach both football and BBall. Ha! He would probly be better than Jokester! I’m kidding but no that’s how bad it is.

I’ve been going to Kentucky football games since the mid 70’s and have been a season ticket holder for more than 20. I’m sick and tired of hearing that Kentucky can never have a great football program, if you ask most of the fans at the games we aren’t looking for a national championship just to be competitive, there is no reason why Kentucky can’t put up the money for a good coach and upgrade the facilities. We just want to finish 7&5 or 8&4 every now and then a 9&3 go to some bowls, beat Florida and Tennessee every so often. Is that really too much to ask i’m sure a decent football program would not hurt the bball program it could help some not that we need help there. I’m sure there are several coaches out there that have made a name for themselves who are looking for an opportunity to be a head coach. The defensive cor. and Alabama is just one example. It can happen if the poweres that be at UK would just let it happen.

Common Sense, for once you and I agree. Joker is dealing with an incredibly young team, and when building a program from the ground up this is the make-or-break point that decides whether a program builds with the coach or tears it down and starts over for no discernible reason.

Guys, CS is right – we’ll be vastly improved next season. We ARE better this year, but even our cupcakes are difficult. Our SEC schedule will be brutal. We have among the hardest schedules in the country.

Stop expecting a winning record for a good but not great team playing one of the hardest schedules in the country. It’s statistically not realistic, barring multiple big upsets. We have a very young team, and as we’ve done for a while now we are young and inexperienced so we have to lean on where our veteran players are; notice that last season our LBs carried a HUGE load for the defense, as they were older and more experienced. This year it’s the D Line, and unfortunately they aren’t as developed. As a result? A lot more of the defensive load is on the shoulders of the young guys, and they simply can’t carry that big a burden.

Next season we’ll be good. The season after very good. Year 5 of the Joker era could potentially see us ranked. Where else have you heard something similar to that? Wasn’t there some coach at a school that did something like that one time.. even beat a top-ranked and eventual National Champ… hmmm.. oh yeah, Rich Brooks! Remember that guy? SAME SITUATION. Stop jumping to judgement.

Also, everyone saying “give joker time”…time for what?? He did not inherit a program in toilet…he inherited a program on the rise and threw it in the toilet…Joker is the head coach..he is responsible for EVERY aspect of the team’s performance…offense, DEFENSE, player development, recruiting, EVERYTHING..and if this is the product of his work…well I think it speaks for itself…it is a disgrace.

Late to the party, but here it goes, troll feeding time. Hey Common Sense??? Took Spurrier 9 years to gain success?? Wrong. He took over USC in 05 with reduced scholarships and only won less than 7 games once (6-6), which was the only year they didn’t go to a bowl. During this time they had 5 years of moderate “Brooks like” success, which Spurrier probably considered failures. Then he had 9(SEC east champ) and 10 win regular seasons. There is no reason that couldn’t be UK’s story. USC’s stadium was built in the 30s as a WPA project, but has been renovated many times, with only a portion of the original remaining. They have put 30 million in renovations in the last 10 years. Don’t forget that in the late 90s USC had a 21 game losing streak that spanned 3 seasons. Yeah, he can be a ‘hole and he will publicly call out his players and assistants if they screw up, but he will do the same to local media when they are unfair to players (think JT). And yeah, if we can get an “attitude changing” coach, he will probably come with baggage, but the nice guy thing isn’t working for us right now either. To not do anything would just flat out suck.
