Petrino camp not happy word got out about his interest in the UK job

WHAS sports anchor Kent Spencer spoke to a member of the Petrino camp this morning, and apparently they’re not too pleased with Bobby Petrino Sr. for his comments to the Courier-Journal last night:

Spin or legit?

Certainly wouldn’t be the first time someone’s family member spoke out of turn, but what are the odds BP WANTS the UK job versus wanting a SEC job? There’re gonna be a couple better SEC positions, so BP may be waiting for those, and what better way to inspire those teams to make their move then by hinting he could go to UK?

I personally want a home run hire, and BP could be one with the proper contract protections in place.

Mitch has himself backed into a corner on this one, let the best Opportunity in years pass by without at least an interview, BP goes to Auburn and hands us our a$$ for years to come, while someone like a Derek Dooley was hired or a retread and we are back looking for a coach again in 3-4 years, while BP has Auburn competing in BCS games

Petrino would be a slam dunk hire!!! Personally I don’t think barney has the sack to make the hire. The only way this happens is if the big $$ boosters step forward & take that decision out of his hands as they did with the Calipari hire.
Those fans who are advocating not hiring Petrino are complete morons. They want the status quo of competing for 6 or 7 wins every few seasons & do not want to take that next step towards building a true sec football program.

Hire the SOB already!!! But if you don’t want to win, and you want Kentucky football to stay the same and be the toilet of the SEC then go hire some “up and comer” OC and hope for the best. Then fire him in 4 years and do the same shit over and over. Orrrrrrrrr, hire a coach who knows how to win ( Petrino ) and get 8 to 10 wins a season. So what if he has done some shady stuff in the past. HE WINS BALL GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SELLS OUT HOME STADIUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRINGS EXCITEMENT TO EACH GAME!!!!!!!!!!! Plus it would eat at each and every one of the dirty bird fans.

This was all strategic. Petrino’s camp knew Barnhart was going to try to get away with not considering Bobby and use the excuse that he wasn’t interested. Petrino’s camp wanted it known that he, indeed, was interested in Kentucky so as to put the fan pressure on Barnhart to give the man a chance. Don’t think for one second that after this Barnhart isn’t feeling the pressure to go in Petrino’s direction.

    This is total spin.

“Hey dad, say something about me wanting to go to UK”, but then have his camp say they’re not happy… c’mon! You mean to tell me Bobby isn’t trying to rock the boat? That’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s rocking UK’s, Auburn’s and whatever other position is or will be open. It’s actually smart, but it shows how shady this guy really is.

I don’t want him at UK. He did wrong how he left at UL, ATL Falcons and now Arkansas. He will leave UK the minute a better SEC jobs opens up, don’t kid yourselves. We had great success with a loyal, older coach that we never had to worry about a bigger name school taking away, Rich Brooks. My vote is hire Phillip Fulmer. He has proven he can win in the SEC (and the entire thing), I think he would stay loyal to UK and not jump ship to another bigger school as well if he was given the chance. Any of these up and coming coaches if they have success at UK will only be here a few years. Lets get Rich Brooks V2.0

I’m telling you, the possibility of making a true contender out of UK has never been higher with the chance that Petrino could be the coach. The people who have influence at UK know this and with the great possibilities that could come with a Petrino hire they are going to be on Barnhart to get this done.

  29. Big Blue Realist
    12:08 pm November 8, 2012 Permalink

27, great idea, NOT!!! why hire another retread & struggle for 6 or 7 wins a year? It is the narrow minded fans like you that want to keep the status quo here & never at least try to build a truly competitive team.

    12:09 pm November 8, 2012 Permalink

There’s a few things that have to be weighed here:

    1. How interested is Petrino in the UK job? Is it strategic? What loss is it for us to conduct an interview to gauge this interest?

    2. With his baggage how likely is it that such programs like a Auburn or UT are likely to take him with the attention that he would likely get? UK is more of a backwater and he could operate in comparatively more obscurity than he would at either of those jobs.

    3. Is the risk of hiring him and it blowing up or him leaving short-term greater than the likely benefits of improved recruiting, fan interest, ticket sales, winning, etc? Do we really have anything to lose with a likely record of 2-10 this season? How have the places he left fared up to this point? (UL is doing fine. The Falcons got a great coach and situation going on. Arkansas will get someone decent to come in, in my estimation).

I think if you really weight all these sub-factors against each other from the 3 different aspects of the situation, he is worth at least interviewing for the the position especially if we can’t get a Kirby Smart or Rex Ryan(lol) or some other big name that can carry weight and bring in personnel and players. A Niel Brown or some cute lil OC from a Non-BCS school isn’t going to cut it. They never have and never will. IF you’re serious about contending for SEC Championships as Mitch Barnhart stated. They might not even be enough to get us consistently bowl eligible.

Most schools are cut-throat about winning in football. I think it’s about time we picked up a similar attitude.

I seriously doubt Tressel will be in the mix simply because of the show-clause. So be it. But you morons (cough cough 24 Big Blue Realist) who say they don’t want Tressel because “Joker has a better record against SEC teams than Tressel” I’m not going to even begin to tell you how stupid you are, because it’s most idiotic statement ever, it kinda speaks for itself. We may not look at Tressel, but if you’re reasoning is that he lost to the best SEC teams in any given year; YOU make Kentucky fans look like the most uniformed fanbase in the world. That’s like saying a world renowned Oncologist is a bad doctor because he hasn’t cured cancer. GET A FU**ING CLUE!!

Do you remember when some pathetic Arkansas fans held a “rally” to support Petrino after he was was caught cheating on his wife and lying to the administration–all because he made them better than average in football? All–and I mean ALL–of the national media and blogosphere viewed this event as worse than a farse; these fans were seen as the most dimwitted dolts willing to excuse anything in order to win. It was rightly viewed by everyone as a caricature of blind redneck realpolitik at its most naked and embarrassing. Well, if UK were to hire Petrino, then our university and fan base would be seen as even worse, because we asked for Petrino after knowing how bad he is. At least Arkansas discovered it after he was already their coach. If you want Petrino, then you want UK to be painted as the darkest example of the win-at-all costs mentality in college athletics, and UK would deserve this reputation. I hope we avoid this fate.

Not saying I am 100% against Petrino, but do you Petrino folks really think he would stay longer than 2 or 3 years? I am sure that might be the case with just about anyone we hire who does well but wouldn’t we atleast want to consider that if we do hire him we are almost guaranteed to have to rebuild again in 3 or 4 years?

  38. My take
    12:27 pm November 8, 2012 Permalink

30, last I checked we are well short of 6 or 7 wins, I would love that this year. I think it is narrow minded to just go after the biggest name out there without looking at Petrino’s history.

Why should we get him? To have two seasons of 8 or 9 wins and then watch him go off to LSU, Alabama, Florida or some other school that fired their coach or that went off to the NFL? We would be in shambles exactly like every program he has left. Stay away from him. Same thing would happen if we hired a young up and comer and has a lot of success here. They’d be out the door in a couple of years to bigger and better things.

#27 Fulmer isn’t getting any offers now. I don’t think Tressels is is an option but that’s who I would want, sanctions won’t matter when we are going 2-11. I liked Rich Rod too a lot but hes at Arizona I think and probably will be staying there. That leaves one big name coach and that’s this guy. I can forgive him for cheating on his wife, people cheat on their spouses and a lot don’t get caught.

Louisville players had a party when this guy left them. He then ditched the falcons mid season, showing he doesn’t really care about his guys in the locker room. Then the Arkansas fiasco. This isn’t about just forgiving a guy who’s made a mistake. He has a long history of putting his interest above the program’s. I guarantee he’ll jump ship the first chance he gets. I would honestly be happier with an upcoming, exciting coordinator who is dedicated to righting the ship in the right way. Or sonny dykes. This is Mitch’s career an legacy on the line, I would never put Bobby petrino in control of my future. I want to see a winning football program too, but this risk isn’t worth taking

45 – You do realize we are Kentucky, not Auburn, right? Petrino can retire at an Auburn. He would be at UK no longer than 3 or 4 years and then we’ll be back at square one, maybe worse. I think its funny some of you talk about “building” a program, yet Petrino would be the last guy to actually build something. He’ll be out the door as soon as he can.

Be careful what you wish for folks. There are better options than Petrino.

Dave Baker was on the Joe B. show today, and he said that UK should hire Petrino if they can. He has dealt with him for years while covering the SEC, and knows many more football people then you. You have given your “Not Knute Rockne” speech how UK is one of the worst job in the country, and booger faced kid. You have also said that you expect UK to lose every game they are going to play anyway. You said that THE UL players had a party after he left UL. I know someone that worked in the UL football office with Petrino. He was a “hard-ass” and those where the players that got in trouble after he left. If UK’s job is as bad as you love to tell people, UK should be happy someone like him would take it.
