The eyes of the Bluegrass will be focused in Louisville tonight for the Derby Festival Classic, but there could be some good things brewing across the country this evening also. Incoming UK freshman DeMarcus Cousins (above) and possible future UK point guard John Wall take the court with Team USA in the Nike Hoops Summit tonight in Portland at 10 pm eastern time. That Xavier Henry character wil be playing as well and it will be aired on Fox Sports.
The optimistic UK fan has to hope that Cousins is doing his best to lure Wall and/or Henry to Lexington as well. Fear not, optimistic UK fan, because John Wall said in an interview yesterday that Cousins is applying some pressure to get Wall to commit to UK. But, Mason Plumlee is trying to get Wall to commit to Duke and John Henson is preaching the good Carolina word as well. Basically, it’s a lot of pressure. And, that’s exactly how Wall phrased it.
But, unlike what we were all thinking with the Cousins decision, is time actually on the side of the Wildcats here? I’m just speculating here, but you have to think that the longer the John Wall saga drags out, the more it hurts Duke and helps Kentucky. Let’s be honest, the main reason UK is getting a serious look right now is because of Calipari and they weren’t really in the conversation until Coach Cal jumped ship. This might also favor North Carolina a bit, but most people tend to agree that they are still a long shot in this race. I’d have to assume that time is UK’s friend right now. It means that he’s at least listening and taking it very seriously. But, I’d gladly be wrong and welcome Wall giving a verbal to Coach Cal after tonight’s game.
