I am bumped about last nights game… But we will get stronger. We have been spolied by last years team and we as UK fans have to understand that.
Uncle Matt… don’t be eyeing Ryan’s tight nipple sweater.

Let’s face it, we’re seeing the downside of the one-and-done philosphy. No veterans, mis-matched players, lot of immaturity. It’s OK…we won it all last year and might do so again next year. I can handle an off year.

The way I look at this season in relation to playing at a casino. Last year we won the jackpot, this year we are just playing with house money. If we win I’m happy, if not I’m not as upset as I have been in past years. Plus this years freshmen are playing just like that, March is still a while away folks!

  6. G-Unit

Cal got outcoached last night. What has Cal said this teams strength is???? Their Speed. Cal knew ND was gonna play extremely slow and simply let them dictate how he played. Thats bad coaching. He should have come out pressing more, picking up full court. UK needed to dictate what ND did and the tempo they played, not simply play ND’s style by default… and thats on Cal.

  10. Jones Returns
    10:04 am November 30, 2012 Permalink

Here’s who will leave (but they’ll be drafted low so it makes Cal look bad for pushing them out):

    Noel
    Goodwin

    Here’s who will stay:

    Hood
    Polson
    Harrow
    Malone
    Cauley-Stein
    Lanter (redshirt)
    Poythress
    Long
    Wiltjer

So that’s 8 scholarships that will be taken next year. We already have 5 commits (Harrison, Harrison, Young, Lee, Willis). That’s a total of 13 scholarships for the 2013 season. YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO HAVE 13 SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS IN NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL!!!!

So no matter how bad we want Wiggins, Randle or Gordon we will not be able to get any of them one because we already shot our wod on two sh#t players (Lee & Willis) and two because this years team is no going to have nearly as many one and dones as we originally thought. SERIOUS PROBLEM. These stars will have to go somewhere and if they all go to Florida or someplace together it could result in a change in tide in the world of recruiting.

    Marcus Lee (9 Games)

    PPG: 24.5
    RPG: 20.2
    Blocks: 8.4
    Steals: 2.5
    Assists: 5.6

In his 3rd game that I went and saw, he had 18 blocks against a team from Oakland that had some good D-1 talents.

The problem with this team is not on the offensive side of the ball. It’s DEFENSE! Our guards have got to stop playing olé style defense by getting tough and keeping their man in front of them. The amount of layups given up is unforgivable. Three guys trying to block a shot leaving no one to rebound is fundamental. The coaches have to hammer that point because it’s happened multiple times in every game this season. We’re getting KILLED on screens. Guys look confused when they have to switch. Communicate! When the defense improves, then we can think about being a real contender.

To continue, Cal was doing a favor this year because there were extra available, Polson didn’t come expecting a scholarship. Polson didn’t deserve a scholarship and isn’t a scholarship player, he was given a financial gift this year and shouldn’t expect one every year. If you are so “old school” then you should believe in kids not just expecting something they haven’t earned.

#83, I would love to see Hood develop his game, and he has been in Cal’s doghouse for at least part of the season for some reason. His big liability seems to be lateral quickness on defense, so that might be part of it. Personally, I would like to see Cal try these guys in a zone defense – it would help to keep players like Kyle, Hood, and to a lesser extent Mays on the floor, since these are the guys who seem to be getting beat consistently in m2m defense.

Many people are wanting to blame Archie Goodwin on a lot of those out of control drives but they were not completely his fault. If you watch, there were times when the offense had no movement, there was no one trying to get open. That’s when Archie decided to take it to the rim. I also saw Cal motion to him to drive on a couple of occasions. Archie just needs to learn to draw the defense and throw it to an open man instead of shooting. I think they will figure the offense out. Its the defense I’m concerned about. They keep making the same mistakes. They are either not learning or not listening.

It seems that I recall Cal talking about the possibility of trying a zone early in the season, with Willie and Nerlens in the lineup. He may have to think of it some more. Cal likes to say that he “can’t hide you”, but zones have been used for years with success for just that – hiding one or more players who don’t have the quickness to stay with their opponents in man-to-man. The argument could be made that they would get shredded against a good 3-pt shooting team like ND, but with the length this team has they might be able to close on the shooters better than you think. I don’t see how it could be much worse, the way their defense looked last night. Also, it would be a different look to throw at opponents to keep them off balance. I hope Cal considers it.

Each one of the guys needs to exhibit improvement in various areas. One thing I see the whole team could improve on is using a complete and good jump stop off the dribble to get collected in the lane and make the proper play. None of them are using jump stops correctly and that is why they are often throwing up inaccurate shots in the lane or are charging over defenders.

Draft 2 more PF’s in Royce White and Terrence Jones… Terrence goes off in the summer league, goes off in preseason, has played very well when he has got in in the Reg Season and the GM’s answer to that is to send him to the D-League because of “overcrowding at his position.” Lol, maybe his dumbass should not have drafted 2 more PF’s! If he didn’t think he was the guy for the job; couldn’t he have recruited another point guard? He may not have gotten a Wall, Knight, or Teague; but there had to be another option out there.

A somewhat dissapointing game, without a doubt. However…

This group feels very similar to the 2011 (Brandon Knight) team. In ways they are inverse in their makeup. While we rode Brandon Knight to virtually all of our offensive in 2011, Cal wants the 2013 Cats to have their offense and distributing from every position come March.

This team has a much much higher potential than the 2011 Cats and Cal is really hitting them with information overload. Combination of: being scared by ND, recall fright, and Cals propensity to manufacture adversity led to way more adversity than he saw coming.

Every year Cal does this. He started it in his Memphis days, fell in love with aspects of what it does, and expanded its application at UK. At this point in the year he pursues sub optimal strategy and often ignores exploitable areas in a given game in order to teach a variety of lessons as well as to see how the team reacts to a given set of parameters. Last night, we should have been looking to run, particularly our bigs (including Poythress). In the half court, we should be getting catches for literally everyone except Mays inside of 15 ft. This a smart, versatile team. Rewatch Maryland if you don’t see it.

I view last nights message from Cal to players: move it around the edge of their defense and find your man or seams. He tells them this knowing ND will get in their face and that emphasizing off the ball movement to the inside of the zone is the real way to attack it. He wants his players to figure out that they must win this thing on their own. I’m entirely convinced that he’s misleading to his players at this point in the year in order to manufacture adversity.

That team at least gave effort. Also, that team had a lot more upside with a PG and a lock down defender in Liggins. As a fan I live with losses no big deal that happens to any team. Ah, Old School… I remember giving you the smack down on a thread here a year or two ago. You were saying how Cal could never win and I told you give the man time. How’d that turn out? Last year Cal was working all year to develop a team to win a championship, and we won a championship. Now you’re coming back to seriously criticize Cal for last year’s coaching because Polson didn’t get minutes? Man, you really need to get a grip. How about you really try and enjoy the moment. Give this team some time to develop and we’ll talk again after we give this team some time to jell. It’s still November and we’re coming off a year where we won a championship and are building from scratch. Old School, are you just naturally unhappy and always lamenting how bad things are and what they were or could or should be or if only… ? I just feel bad for you at this point. You seem to relish in the moments when things go bad so you can come and tell everyone “told you so…”

199….I guess you’re right. Cal’s an awful recruiter. Seriously though….Harrow, Noel, and Witjer aren’t meeting expectations. That’s why they’re struggling. No way that Cal could’ve known over the summer that: Harrow would cry through 4 of the first 6 games, the country’s top recruit would have stone hands, and Witjer would actually get worse at a defender and become VERY streaky as a shooter.

209 — Great point. The kid is not nearly as good a shot blocker/defender as he could be. He needs to stay in a defensive stance away from the basket, and needs to body up offensive players near the basket and get his hands straight up and high. I noticed guys backing him down near the basket and he his would be down at his knees. They just turned and shot it over him easily. That should never happen like that.

  223. not trying to defend old school
    11:44 am November 30, 2012 Permalink

I think old school, like many fans, think there is a flaw in the current recruiting trend…
4-6 one-and-dones (if they are good enough is fine)
1-2 4 year players in each class that are NOT liabilities should they have to go in for injury or foul trouble is what we are lacking
this would allow a cast of super-starters to have a solid bench (not made up of walk-on’s who are given scholarships simply because we’re so far under the limit)
I realize Cal likes the 6-man rotation (and i’m not complaining about his results); but a consistent 8-man rotation would provide for depth needed for injuries/foul trouble and i believe the starters would get more out of practicing against better players.

    223 – that’s much of what I’m saying.

Look at this year’s team. When they practice – who are they going up against? Just look at the bench during the game – there’s only 5-6 bodies over there – and three-four of them are walk-on caliber.

You really expect these 18-year-old kids to get so much better in practice going up against guys who might start on a Div. II school?

And then in a game – what happens when a guy gets hurt, gets in foul trouble, maybe has an off night – I know it worked last year – but as a general rule – you need 8-9 solid guys.

There is nothing wrong with playing a zone. Yes, our primary defense is man-to-man and our guys should learn how to play man-to-man 90 percent of the time. That stated, there is no reason why we can’t play some zone during times we are really struggling to get stops.
