Football practice began today and as with the beginning of every season, the talk is about the newcomers. And no newcomer attracts more attention than Freshman Quarterback Morgan Newton. With apologies to Ryan Mossakowski (who may also end up great), there may not be a more hallowed recruit in terms of fan interest at UK since Tim Couch came from the hills of Leslie County. The entire UK football nation sees Morgan as a potential star and believe he is the future of UK football.
Newton knows these expectations and willingly puts them on his shoulders. I have spoken with him a number of times in the past year and he is polite, intelligent and most of all, ready to dominate at UK. He speaks consistently about wanting to help UK take the next step on the football field and he told me last year at a game in Commonwealth that UK was the “perfect place for all I want to do.” Today started that journey. He is rooming with Will Fidler (a surprise I must say) and is very likely to see some playing time during the season. Whatever is the case, the journey for Morgan begins today. Here is hoping he reaches that full potential.
