Kentucky needs to make a decision with this next hire… they have 2 options:

    1) Get a coach that will sell tickets…which translates to a flashy offense… a la Mark Helfrich or someone like that.

    2) Get a coach that will invest in DEFENSE. and its going to have to be someone who can DEVELOP talent because no matter who comes we are still going to get 3-star recruits. We have to have a coach to develop those 3 stars to the point where they can compete and develop depth.

If UK wants any longevity in winning they need to go with option 2.

    9) No, I’m saying just say he’s bad. I’m sick of “man the team is terrible”

I just want to hear him affirm what UK fans have been saying for 2-3 years. That Joker is a terrible coach.

Matt: “It doesn’t really matter who’s fault it is”

    That’s what I’m talking about.

He refuses to say Joker sucks. I know he’s trying to be politically correct but come on. He just acts like its an unfortunate situation for all parties involved. He said “I feel bad for the coaches, I feel bad for the players, I feel bad for the team.”

That’s not Matt taking a hardline on something. That’s Matt refusing to call a spade a spade. Joker is a clown, was a God awful hire, and is the worst coach in America.

Do you realize how arrogant it is to call fans stupid then 2 years later start agreeing with them?

My point was I want to hear Matt Jones say Joker is flat out a bad coach. He won’t say those words.

I’m sorry that he’s some how implied it without saying it or more or less said it by saying something else. Thats fine… buy he won’t say he’s a bad coach though. Maybe its him being classy, but does that make me wrong that he won’t say it? No.

48 – Are you talking about the Pittsburgh game? If so, if memory serves Hartline didn’t play that game. You are also putting words in my mouth when you say “This whole thing has just been one big tragic outcome due to poor circumstances”. Joker has failed. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it, but there is also no reason to kick a man when he is down. We just need to handle this as gracefully as possible.
I don’t remember Matt saying that fans were stupid for calling Joker terrible. He did feel that he needed to have this year to turn things around and disagreed with those who wanted to get rid of Joker last year. There were many reasons for that line of thinking and Joker has had his chance and blown it. Now no one will blame us for changing direction.

All I said was why can’t Matt just say he’s a bad coach. I don’t really have a problem with Matt but simply said it seems he refuses to say “Joker’s a bad coach”

Even Linda basically admitted he’s trying to be classy. That’s fine… but don’t say I’m wrong. You can’t say “You’re wrong, Matt is just trying to be classy, that’s why he won’t say it.”

62 – We would have looked like idiots if we had gotten rid of Joker last year or the year before. Look at our history. It is very hard to win at KY and Joker’s win/loss record in his first two years was not that bad when you compare it to our history. Any coach in America who saw us fire Joker after his first two years would know that they would not stand a chance in hell of changing the fortunes of UK football if they took the job because they would not be given the time needed to implement the changes needed. I remember how difficult a time Mitch Barnhart had trying to find a coach that would take the KY job when he finally hired Rich Brooks. This is a lousy head coaching job and we will be very lucky to hire a good coach.

The problem is Mitch. He actually believes UK cannot compete. There are 11 division one recruits in the state of KY playing football this season (8) in Louisville. Not one of them has committed to KY for next season. Simple logic would lead a competent A.D. to fire his coach that can’t recruit in his own backyard. Someone (Board of trustees) please terminate both of them.

    68) First of all, we struggled to find a coach before because we were in a probation era for the program. Do you honestly not realize that? That’s like Chris Cross comparing Joker and Rich Brooks’ record after 2 years and talking about how Joker has done better. OF COURSE HE HAS, Brooks took over a program in shambles, Joker took over a program in good shape.

Also, we will struggle a lot more now because we’ve now returned to the nighmare scenerio where the program is going to be coming off a 2-10 (if were lucky) season. Clearly that was the better of the two decisions. Firing Joker last year and looking for a new coach would’ve been much more harmful then trying to sell a 2-10 team to a coach.

You cannot honestly be this dumb.

I for the life of me can not understand how people say “Joker needs time to build the program up”…instead we are giving him more time to tear the program down. I could understand saying Joker needs time if he were just coming on board as a new hire but he had been with the program for years before he took over as head coach. JOKER RECRUITED THE PLAYERS HE INHERITED FROM BROOKS. The first season he took a team with Cobb, Locke, Hartline and disappointed…they couldn’t even beat a Pitt team without a coach. So I call bullsh*t when people say it would have looked bad to have let Joker go last season. Other coaches who would have been interested in being our coach would be able to discern the difference because they know the business of football/coaching much better than we do. They would have known that we just didn’t pull a guy off the street and fire him after 2 seasons, they would have realized that Joker had been with the program for years and failed when given the head caoching job. Mitch needs to get up of his a$$ and do something now, not later!!

After listening to both candidates’ stances on this most pressing issue, I feel that I must cast my vote for…..

    J A Brooks

Sorry, Linda, but he’s right. Joker is an awful coach, which was painfully obvious to any objective viewer by the end of last season.

Re: The debate between J A Brooks and Linda Taylor. I will say it, Mr. Brooks. Joker was a bad hire, an awful hire, the wrong hire, and he has taken this prograam down to the level of the Bill Curry days. And this has been painfully obvious for quite some time. It may make you feel better about yourself (Ms. Taylor) to be kindler and gentler about the situation, but it comess actoss as being very, very, very, very, very, . . . naive and serves no purpose for the greater good, which is to end this nightmre ASAP. And Mr. Brooks, do no worry whether Matt speaks the words you want or skirts the issue. Matt Jones has absolutely NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER on when Joker is fired or who is hired to replace him. NONE AT ALL. So I wouldn’t get too worked up about that. The powers that be (not Mitch) will make this happen when they reach their level of frustration with the program. It won’t be long. And when the coaching search is officially on, they will tell Mitch to get the hell out of the way. Same when Cal was hired.

My hope is Joker and Mitch will come to an agreement very soon and Joker will announce he will step down at the end of the season. This will allow Joker to save face and allow Kentucky to get on with the coaching search right away. Joker has simply not taken advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime to be the Head Coach at Kentucky. Joker has been with the program since Brooks came, and he has been given his shot and he has misfired. He either doesn’t have what it takes, or lacks the drive and work ethic to make it happen.

Try this math on for size:

UK has 5 games left this year.

Jim Tressel has a 5 game suspension in his Show Cause penalty.

Wouldn’t it be a shame if Mitch hired Tressel this afternoon, and he had to sit out the rest of this year?

Oh yeah, we would be banned from playing in a bowl game this year. OUCH.

  105. The Sad Truth
    9:20 am October 14, 2012 Permalink

Here’s the sad truth. No up and coming young head coach or assistant (Kirby Smart) will take the UK job at any price. The job is a path to coaching obscurity or retirement (or back to retirement). It’s been that way since Bryant and Collier left in the middle of the last century. No big name head coach on the sidelines (Gruden) would have any reason to take the job. No tainted big name head coach (Tressel, Petrino) would be acceptable given the not-so-distant NCAA compliance problems (plus Petrino is a lying jerk), nor would they be interested since there will be vastly better jobs available once they have ceased being so “radioactive”. So, what are we left with? We will likely be lucky to get a Cutcliff, Chizek, or other re-cycled mid-level coach. We got Cal because UK is THE premier college basketball destination. We are a laughing stock in football and our expectations for a new coach must be tempered accordingly.

Freshmen, injuries, weather, whatever…Since Joker has been in charge we have gone backwards. We cant score against the #92 defense? They should have prepared Whitlow instead of Newton…Coaching. We have the #113 offense in BCS. Coaching. Both lines are terrible. Coaching. Joker should resign today, finish out the season with no pay and forget about a buyout. How much did he make for dragging this program back to the Curry days? Thats his severence pay.

So tired of hearing concern for the players. Screw them, they had NO heart last night and haven’t shown much the whole season.

75% of them don’t belong on a SEC campus. When was the last time UK beat out a team from the top half of the conference for a recruit? Never. These “kids” are getting a full ride to a top university and don’t even have self pride to show they appreciate it by showing any heart.

  110. WHY
    9:52 am October 14, 2012 Permalink

Why do we keep acting like we need to be nice to Joker just because he played here? Dude isn’t in the record books as one of our top WRs, he was a role player, nothing more. He has been average all his life, and skated by. This is the hardest thing he’s faced in his life and is failing, miserably. If he was as big of a “UK man” as some want to say, he would resign today. No excuses, just say, “I’m not getting it done, time to give someone else a shot.”

#105, I’m afraid you are absolutely correct. So sad, but true. The UK “powers that be” care little for SEC football and only want to dump $$ into our bball program. Crushes me to think that we are that “wimpy” when it comes to football. Best time of year is taligating at Commonwealth, yet our administration kicks us in the nuts decade after decade. We have never had an Adm. that has a clue about how to get us 8 wins every 4-5 years…bunch a women running the show over there. Definition of insanity…”doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a differeent result!”

#112 – As if Petrino would stay at any school for 6 years, let alone 26 years. The guy bolts as soon as anything sweeter is offered. If he went to UT and found success, he’d be off to another shot at the NFL within 3-4 years and UT would be where Arkansas is now (still beating UK, but whatever…). Enjoy!

113- he was at Ark for 5 seasons.

    10:20 am October 14, 2012 Permalink

I said, “As if Petrino would stay at any school for 6 years…”

Five is still less than six, right?

And Petrino only coached four years at Arkansas — he quit the Falcons in December 2007:

    2008 Arkansas 5—7
    2009 Arkansas 8—5
    2010 Arkansas 10—3
    2011 Arkansas 11—2

So my final comment about him only staying 3-4 years until he finds something sweeter (in the case of Arkansas, it was an ass that was sweeter than his wife’s) is still also accurate.

    How about you try again?

  116. JayCee

I never said that I wouldn’t take him. I was making fun of the UT fan who wants him as their coach.

I’m a UK fan. We don’t have a football tradition like they do. I’d take a monkey covered in crap as a coach if it’d get us ONE good football season.

  118. Rick

I retract that: It wouldn’t even have to be a “good” season. I’d settle for an enjoyable season with ~6ish wins, if we were at least competitive and not so painful to watch.

So, yeah, I’d take Petrino. I didn’t mean to imply that I wouldn’t. I just don’t think UT should take him. (Because he is ours. For 3-4 years.)

Has a good gig right now really don’t think he’d consider, course of action?? Honestly seriously what can they do to stop the train wreck and ease the pain ? There are a lot of experts behind the keyboard nowadays.. But this is a very unique situation in need of a gene Hackman ie Hoosiers type performance..
New coach will have to be a basic egomaniac to come in first place will have to be a successful recruiter and a magician … Not to mention a workaholic an unbelieveable motivator as well as a business man …

Jim Tressel turned 59 earlier this month. If he wants to coach college football again, he almost certainly will have to wait until at least Dec. 17, 2016, when he would be 64.

The NCAA delivered, if not a fatal blow, then a serious setback to the idea that Tressel will ever step foot on a college sideline again by issuing him a five-year “show-cause” penalty. The disgraced Ohio State coach had been mentioned for the Akron job and other openings, although it was never clear whether that talk was very serious. Now, he is basically radioactive to any school that might want to hire him.

While the show-cause doesn’t specifically prevent a team from hiring a coach, it does effectively serve as a ban in practice. Any school that employs Tressel must go before the NCAA infractions committee as to why it should be allowed to do so, and it could face its own sanctions as a result. The school also would have to issue a report to the committee every two months during the show-cause period detailing how it is monitoring the coach. Any additional violations committed by the coach during that time could really bring the NCAA hammer down on that school. And suffice it to say that most athletic programs don’t want to spend any more time than absolutely necessary talking to the infractions people.

No Division I team has ever hired a coach saddled with an ongoing show-cause penalty. Some coaches whose college careers were essentially ended by the show-cause include former Ohio State basketball coach Jim O’Brien, ex-Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and former Kentucky recruiting coordinator Claude Bassett.

Tressel has other options. He has served as a consultant for the Indianapolis Colts this season. He could easily find employment in the NFL as an assistant, much like the way Sampson did in the NBA. If after five years in the pros he wanted to come back to college, there might be some opportunities for him. I can’t see a major program ever wanting to hire a 64-year-old head coach with that kind of baggage, but a team from the MAC or an athletic director looking to make a splash might be willing to roll the dice. Or Tressel could try his hand at being an assistant at a bigger program.

For now, “The Vest” is sidelined as a college coach. He has 229 wins, including 94 at Ohio State. Those numbers would be higher if last season’s 11 victories weren’t wiped clean by the NCAA. It will be at least five years before he can add any more.

Why is WLAP’s volume so low on iHeart radio and Ootunes? This has happened for the last month. Even at full volume I can’t hear the hear the commentators, instead, I hear a loud whine, static and a faint dialog. Other members of my UK Alumni group report the same issue.
Please fix this before basketball season, or we fans outside the Commonwealth won’t be able to hear the pre/post-game.

#124 – I think it’s because there is a UK sports blackout on IHeartRadio. You technically shouldn’t hear anything. For some reason UK does not want their sports broadcast on the Internet.

98.1 the bull does not broadcast the games on IHeartRadio either.

Now, I may not be right. But 103.7 in Frankfort had a message on their website during the Florida game about it being “blacked out to online broadcasts at the provider’s request.” That’s where I originally saw it. The only thing that comes in at all is Matt’s postgame show, but the official UK game broadcast, coach’s show, etc. is all blocked out.

    Which is pretty crappy.
