The John Wall Situation

This may have been one of the busiest news weeks in recent memory. With Dodson, Orton, Henry, Wall, Twitter, Pitino and everything in between dominating the news, it may be hard to get an overall handle on where things sit right now. So lets end the week with Five Takeaway Points on John Wall:

(1): Kentucky is in in the lead

There isnt a person following this recruitment who does not believe Kentucky is the leader. Calipari produced a great visit on Wednesday in which he laid out the case for UK, ranging from the fact that Wall will be a star in the Dribble Drive offense, Derrick Rose is the NBA Rookie of the Year, there are problems at Florida, LeBron James played for Coach K and still favors Cal and Kentucky can be a Final Four team with Wall at the point. Wall loves Calipari and those around him say that Kentucky is in the driver’s seat at this time.

(2) Billy Donovan and Florida are stronger than people think

Florida has done a great job in the last couple of weeks of really getting involved with Wall and making their sell to him. Donovan has made a connection with Wall and has been to see him twice. They are trying desperately to get him on campus for a visit and as of yet, he hasnt committed to it. The only bad news I could see in the next couple of weeks would be a Wall decision to visit Gainesville. That might make this interesting.

(3) Duke has handled this poorly.

Duke was at one time the Wall leader, especially in the week or two after Calipari came to Lexington. But since then, a negative interaction between a staff member and someone close to Wall, Coach K’s seeming indifference to the situation and the sell jobs of Calipari and Donovan have made the situation get worse for the Blue Devils. They are hoping to make up ground after his potential visit next week (which has been on again/off again), but Duke may be third or worse as of today. They are however the likely favorite of Brian Clifton, his AAU coach, so that could help.

(4): The Miami trip is this weekend

Why is Wall going to Miami? Maybe just to hang out…but if they sell him on the weather, the chance to be the go-to guy and the overall of fun of South Beach, there might be another player in the mix. IT will be interesting to hear his thoughts after this visit.

(5) UNC is still a wildcard

The Heels just lost their point guard and have an open scholarship. Wall grew up a UNC fan and is an admitted admirer of the Heels. But his AAU coach hates the school and they havent been recruiting him at all in recent weeks. However if UNC is desperate, they might get desperate. So we shall see.

Bottom line….Wall is UK’s to lose AS OF TODAY. But this may drag out for some time if John Wall wants it to….so enjoy the fact that the Cats are in the lead, but dont get too confident about the future, one way or the other.
