The Jeff Goodman Band’s new poll: “Dirty Recruiting”

CBSSports.com is still rolling out results from its poll of 100 coaches and today’s topic is dirty recruiting. College basketball’s fifth favorite writing quartet asked coaches, “Which player is perceived to have the dirtiest recruitment in the last 10 years?”

Drumroll, please…

Shabazz Muhammad: 15 percent
Anthony Davis: 13 percent
John Wall: 7 percent
Kyle Anderson: 7 percent
O.J. Mayo: 7 percent
Derrick Rose: 6 percent
Renardo Sidney: 6 percent
Terrence Jones: 3 percent
Tobias Harris: 3 percent
Chris Obekpa: 3 percent

Kentucky had three of the top 10 responses, including two of the top three, with John Calipari adding another in Derrick Rose. Shabazz Muhammad, who is currently under investigation, finds himself at the top of the list with 15-percent of the vote.

One coach who voted for Davis said, “I’ve never seen a recruitment get shut down as quickly as that one got shut down. I don’t know how they did it. But it was a strong play.”

Another coach said,  “Baylor hired John Wall’s AAU coach and that still wasn’t enough to get that deal done. That recruitment was on another level. And remember, Roy Williams basically stopped recruiting him. Best player in the country is from North Carolina, and North Carolina didn’t really want anything to do with it. What does that tell you?”

Haters gonna hate.

They wish they had 8.

I can understand how Jones would get a bad look or two, but Davis? How can you be headed to Cleveland State and then switch to UK after they offer and be considered dirty recruiting?

How could anyone not choose OJ Mayo or Renardo Sidney as the top choice? Both guys were PROVEN to have taken extra benefits. Mayo put USC on probation and Sidney lost an entire year of eligibility. The fact that Bazz, AD, Wall, and TJ are on the list just because Cal was heavily involved is laughable.

These polls continue to amaze me. Not only are the coaches quotes pathetic and jealous, they have to be from the mid level D 1 programs who have no chance at signing any top tier talent anyways. Hate on world! Cal and the Cats are a perfect match!

So basically, we’re supposed to be lead to believe that this is a fair and balanced story based off anonymous quotes from coaches who didn’t get commitments from these players, who happen to be some of the most talented players of the last decade. Suuuuuuuure. Sounds like “Well, they’re had to be something going on here, look at it”. Please, I knew this was a joke when the one player who actually got caught getting a bag of money (O.J. Mayo)and putting his school on probation ended up 5th on the list.

And if St. John’s really cheated to get Chris Obekpa, the 77th ranked player in the class and the 16th ranked Center. They should be ashamed of themselves

I do not care which school does it….but the highest on the list should be in situations where high school/AAU coach got hired as the kid signed. That is never an accident

It’s sad the reason Roy pulled out can’t be because playing for NC was an inferior choice for Wall? or that UK recruited him better? I love the haters who turn everything to their point of view to perpetuate the hate…You keep hatin’ – while we keep winnin’!

Any “Poll” on cheating players that don’t have O.J. Mayo as #1 are a joke and should be ignored. No doubt he was the biggest cheater, maybe in the last 10 tears, and no mention. It is a shame Cal didn’t get him, he would have made the top of the list then. Let the haters hate on!

Roy pulled out because of his beef with Clifton, he refused to go through Clifton. Coach K, another hometown coach, was on Wall till the very end. Baylor hired Dwoyne Clifton’s brother, not Dwoyne.

I’m now convinced the quotes from the “anonymous coaches” are really just the opinions of Goodman and Parrish themselves, or simply comments ripped from the comment sections of their articles.

I mean, if a person cannot logically reason as to why UK and Cal get top players at this point, that person is retarded.

    Goodman’s next poll.

What coach with the letters o-h-j-n in his first name is perceived to be the biggest cheater in the universe?

I mean,…. these are real live college basketball coaches they’re polling. These are real live college basketball coaches giving their opinions. No? It’s not like the NCAA is breathing down your throats here. The quote about Wall doesn’t sound like someone “hate’n” to me; to me, it sounds like someone stating the facts surrounding the case.
As for Davis, well, it did seem rather odd to everyone, except BBN, that one day his recruitment was wide open. Then, magically, word leaked that his family was asking a large price for his commitment and 5seconds later he signing his LOI.
Not saying anything shady went on, because I don’t know, but you can see how that perception would be there, no matter what school he went to. Same with Wall. If he had signed with Baylor, the same things would’ve been said.
Ask yourselves this, before you riot in the streets,:
    – what did you think about the recruitment of D. Rose before Calipari was hired?
    – What would you have said about Wall’s recruitment if he’d signed with Baylor?
    – Or Davis’s recruitment if he’d gone elsewhere, after the report about his family asking for cash

I don’t actually expect any of you to be objective about this, those are pretty much rhetorical questions. After all, you guys ARE the most passionate/ fiercely loyal fan base in CBB, that is pretty much undisputed. But, if were to be objective, you’d have no problem admitting that these polls, and the quotes from the coaches make sense. It’s not as if they are without cause when they vote that way, or make those statements.

-Have a nice day, please hurry September 2nd

I think it has to be dirty! UK offers the top players things most other schools can’t! A top coach, a tradition rich program, 3 years in a row where the top 6 players get drafted in the NBA! The player becomes a star through out the state that has the biggest fan base! BBN! If I where a coach of another team I’d cry and say its dirty too!

I can’t help but notice that Coach K snaking Rivers from Florida isn’t represented.

And maybe Roy stopped recruiting Wall because maybe he heard Wall isn’t a fan of Afro-American studies. 😉

    20) So there’s no jealousy involved at all from the guys who keep losing out to Cal. No jealousy at all.

    23. I don’t doubt for one second that jealousy has a lot to do with these coaches pointing at Calipari.

    – I’m just saying that it’s not as if they’re w/out cause.
    – I’m quite certain that they all could’ve pointed at other coaches and players, and revealed details about why they thought their recruitments were “dirty.”

These polls are nothing more than things to generate hits during the summer. Any coach who responded in these is full of chicken shit. I bet these people who accused the Davis & Wall recruitments of being dirty would not have been so bold if their name was included in the response. As other users have asked: I wonder how many of these “anonymous coaches” are mid-major schools who never had a chance at these recruits anyway, or coaches who the player was considering before the player signed his LOI.

And btw, this whole “Cal gets all these great players so he HAS to be cheating is really getting old isn’t it?

25- No, I didn’t ask about Shabazz. I asked about Shabaka. You know, Teague’s former coach who was hired as a way to sign Teague. Where is? Why did he leave ul so quickly after Teague comitted to UK? Sounds like Rick was trying to cheat.

    20) OR, maybe Davis shut down his recruitment because no other school besides UK could offer him a national championship team and pretty much lock at being #1 overall pick in the draft. The idea that Davis was being shopped around was never substantiated at all, and IMO was made up by jealous D-bags.

If I remember correctly Ol’ Roy pulled out of John Wall’s recruitment when Wall got in trouble when that group of guys he was with broke into that empty house, the one they told Wall that they had permission to go into.
Possible example of conversation between Cal and AD’s parents:
AD’s parents: “We’d like to get 200,000 grand for Anthony’s services.”
Cal: “We don’t do that at KY. We don’t pay players, it’s against NCAA rules. We do however get a high percentage of our players to the NBA and if AD is ready to go after 1 year, I will encourage him to go. I have had 2 No 1 draft picks in the last few years and that is what I see possible for Anthony if he comes to UK. That will be worth millions more to him in the long run than a lower pick. Isn’t that worth more to him than 200,000 grand would be now?”
AD’s parents: “What you say makes alot of sense coach.”

Yeah…we had to pay Davis and his family 200k to come to Ky to become a National Champion, PoY, and #1 pick. /rolleyes

The Chi-Sun Tribune is directly responsible for the aura of that recruitment.

As for Wall. Roy refuses to go head-to-head with Cal because Cal can offer what he does…but better…AND without lying/keeping the kid in school to suit his own needs. Roy bitched out on the Wall recruitment because he knew he was going to lose. I remember reading something like Roy would only take Wall if he committed and would not recruit him otherwise or something whiny and typical of a UNC dbag like that.

  39. Adam
    7:25 pm August 22, 2012 Permalink

So what I’m reading from this list is that if a top recruit goes to UK, Coach Cal must have done something shady to get them to come. However, none of these producers of polls/articles see a problem with hiring coaches to try and lure recruits to their schools, physical proof of players being paid, and tampering with players who are committed to other schools? Makes sense.
