The Future of the Kentucky-Indiana Basketball Rivalry

The UK-IU series contract ran up immediately after Watford’s shot went through at the buzzer in Bloomington earlier this month. If the series isn’t renewed, that’ll be the last shot Indiana hit against Kentucky, and it’ll provide plenty of trash talking for IU fans for years to come. If the series continues, it is very likely that it will still be the last shot Indiana hit against Kentucky in Bloomington.

A source told KSR that Kentucky is interested in renewing the series and returning it to its neutral site format. UK prefers to rotate the game between Indianapolis and Louisville, the way it was done from 1991 until 2006. Part of UK’s reasoning is for scheduling purposes, and part of it is because we can’t send our Playmates to Assembly Hall anymore.

Kentucky has made it clear to IU that it wants to go back to neutral site games. It’s up to Indiana now.

The ball is in your court, Hoosiers. Just don’t hurt anyone rushing to it this time.

Prior to this years game I wanted the series renewed but that all changed for me. The loss is not the reason, it is the way the fans reacted. We don’t need any more of that. I vote to keep North Carolina and forget the Hoosiers. Perhaps we will meet them in the NCAA tournament and send them home with a season ending loss. That will bring the series to a fitting end.

I think the game needs to be played in the home gyms of UK and IU. Its college basketball and what better way to live in the tradition and legacy of both programs than to go head to head at each others famous venues. I think playing in Rupp and Assembly makes the game that much more special… I vote against the neutral site.

They want a neutral site for the money, not because of the game.

The loss has nothing to do with it but does make UK sound bad but I like the neutral site games. Makes for a fun 50/50 crowd.

The contract ran out and they are interested in making this a neutral site game again, which for UK fans is like tourney games that matter at the end of the season.

UK lost by one point on (a less than) a last second shot on their home floor in front of a frothing-at-the-mouth crowd. Looking back on the ending — if UK had won, I doubt the hoosier redneck faithful would have been a happy bunch. There probably would have some attacks/bottle throwing/spitting towards UK players/coaches/fans (not that there wasn’t any of that anyways).

The ending was good for both — UK fought back well enought to win with a good learning experience thrown in… and IU fans got what they came to see.

Not only did the IU fans act like idiots but wasn’t their coach and school begging them not to share any of their tickets with Ky fans? I don’t think a Class act like UK needs to be playing these type “hateful” games unless it’s in the tournament and on a neutral site. GO Blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am generally not in favor of neutral site games as because I feel it negates the true spirit of college sports by losing a out on the atmospheres each of the institutions in the competition has. Rupp and Ass. Hall are two legendary home venues and hold distinct home field advantages as well as best serve both fanbases. Neutral site games, aside from tourneys (i.e Maui Invitational) are just out for money it seems.

After the total ignorant asses that the IU fans showed themselves to be this year, I will be disappointed if UK keeps IU on the schedule. Being at the game I could not believe the chants coming from the stands, not only from the student section but the rest of the arena. Tom Crean is just a “prick” from the same mold that produced Bobby Knight.

I really don’t understand Cal’s scheduling phiolosophy. BBN is worldwide, but you have to give the season ticket holders big games to offset Lamar, Loyola, Radford, Chattanooga. As of right now, we have no marquee home non-conference home games next year. The statement was made that if you continue one of the IU, UNC, UL games “which sport are you going to cancel?” Yet you want to continue the IU series on a neutral court? And it’s “anyone anytime anywhere” except continuing a home and home with the second biggest college bball name out there other than UK (UNC)? Doesn’t make sense to me

I don’t like neutral site games unless they are part of a tournament. Careful there you inbred Hoosiers. Fact is you need this game more than ever. You are so fn irrelevant that you only get on national tv 2 times per year. One is because it’s part of the Big 10 vs ACC Challenge. The other is because you are playing against Kentucky. To make it simpler for you, IU is irrelevant nationally. We make you relevant for 1 day per year. Without this series…well, 1-1=0. Even inbred elitist trash like you can do that math.

Seriously IU fans, act like you’ve been there. Maybe that’s the problem — it’s been SO LONG since IU fans have seen any success that they don’t know what it feels like to win a game that matters.

If we keep the UK-IU series it needs to be neutral sites. I’ve been to the games in Freedom Hall, Indy and Rupp….by far tons more fun at the neutral sites. The gym is split in half, so you have fans from both schools, cheerleaders from both and mascots from both and this makes for a great college game experience with each teams’ fans trying to out do the other. It is an experience you can only get at a neutral site game like the UK-IU series.

my only problem with the lost to IU is the the calls! We didn’t get any call our way! Any true sports fan saw the same exact thing that everybody else did. They had almost 20 freethrow attempts in the 1st half alone… And so what y’all beat us! The 1st time in how many years??? And you had to cheat us to win! I gaurantee that IU will not make it to the sweet 16… the calls were not neutral & anyone who saw the game, no matter who they’re a fan of, knows that we, UK, were cheated! And “F” Dick Vitale cause he a dick riding hater! I’d love to go 1 on 1 with him & I really don’t mean basketball!… That’s how mad he made me.

Let the Indiana Loosers and there coach have there great win this time because as far as I’m think the game should be dropped. The game with North Carolina is much more important than playing IU. I once thought that when Bobby Knight left IU that Cream would turn the program into a decent program but I should have known that you can’t take the [email protected]*s out of Indiana and he has just became one. I have XXfamily who grew up in KY and now live in Ind. and have become just like the Ind. [email protected]*s. Coach Cal is very smart and the People at UK know that the BBN doesn’t want or need to have to content with such LOW Class fans as they did at the last KY-IU game so they will not go back to a home & home schedule. As much as I dislike Looserville their fans aren’t as big a bunch of [email protected]*s as Indiana but I guess when you have been a nothing program like IU has been for as long as they have been then you can be NOTHINGS.

iu fans have to come here because their board only has about three fans so it would be like talking to yourself. I prefer the neutral site myself because they won’t get those home calls like they did there. They got most of the calls, TJ didn’t show up, we played pretty much like crap most of the game, couldn’t make a foul shot(when we finally got one) and it still took a miracle shot for them to win by one point. Yeah, you’re real good iu…LOL. Their sos is so chitty that it isn’t even funny. The loss doesn’t bother me as I think it will help in the long run. What I do hope for is that we get to play them in the NCAA tourney and send their silly arse’s home along with clappy!

The issue is what is best for the sport of college basketball. That should include the fans, players and any and everyone in attendance at any game. IU showed themselves this year, maybe because it has been so long, maybe they needed the win so they wouldnt have to find another coach at the end of the year, for whatever reason it happened. Of course the reply I got from Mr Glass is the security tried to stop the problems, yeah right, where from the snack bar? It is a wonder none of the UK players were injured during the rush to the floor which oh by the way is against NCAA rules and yet to see anything about the fine they should be getting for doing this, but then when you rush the floor once in what every 15 years guess the NCAA will let them slide. As for keeping the game on the schedule, the neutral site would be the best for the fans since then neither school can restrict the number of fans for either team in attendance. I laugh at my IU fan friends and just ask them what happened to get to a win like that for so long? IU players did want the win more and it showed from the way everyone of them played but that doesnt make them a better team and this week, all will see what it is like for them in the Big 10, then lets see how it plays out at the end of the year. Time to move on to the next game(s) and enjoy the year.

Seriously, are we (UK fans) still complaining about the behavior of IU fans? Get over it for Christ’s sake. I hope as much, if not more, than anyone here that we crush UL on Saturday, but I’m terrified to see what kind of bitching you all move on to should we happen to lose. IU won, we lost, some fans got drunk and chanted “F Kentucky”, an ugly broad (who is not a Playboy Playmate, just b/c you pose for the website does NOT make you a playmate, FYI) may have gotten pushed over. So what, get over it. It’s not the end of the world. You’d swear IU fans were sodomizing young children at Assembly Hall the way some people are still talking about it. Lets move on and move our focus to beating Lamar and then UL and stop crying about the past.

I guarantee once the spring semester starts back up, every big ten game will be sold out at Assembly Hall. I assume you are a Kentucky fan with the irrelevance of the facts you are presenting. I don’t understand why Kentucky wouldn’t want to play IU in the coming years. They will be a top 10 program for a while barring any type of recruiting setback. I’m a Purdue fan/grad and grew up in Southern Indiana. I’ve witnessed classless acts by IU, UK, UL, and even my own school. Every school does it. If you think going into Kirkwood bars or into Assembly hall on a Saturday, before finals, for the biggest game of the year isn’t gonna bring out some drunk college kids, then you’re insane. It wasn’t the biggest game of the year because it was Kentucky. It was the biggest because you were ranked #1. If you were unranked, the fans wouldn’t have stormed the court. If you think that Kentucky fans are classy and IU isn’t you’ve got your head in the sand. I’m not saying IU fans are angels, as I’ve hated them plenty of times. However, grow up and take a loss… admitting that you lost is class. #50 and 55 said the classiest thing during the entire post. One more thing… if you’re gonna post on here about other “ignorant” fan-bases, make sure you use proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
