The Five Biggest Hurdles To 40-0

When Cal was asked what his goal was following the national championship his answer was simple “Go undefeated” and with the release of the full schedule today we now know the path Kentucky will have to blaze as they attempt to reach the elusive goal. Things aren’t going to be easy for the Cats this year but if you believe the hype then this is the team that can do it. Which games are going to be the hardest along the way?  Here are my picks for the five biggest hurdles to 40-0:

5. Louisville

So normally when the defending champs are coming to town you’d expect the game to be one of the more likely losses you’ll see all year. However there isn’t too much to be afraid of with this year’s Card team. First of all let’s look at the facts. To date Cal has owned Rick in the UK-UL series going 4-1 in the meetings so far. Oh and that one loss was only by 3 points on the road with the worst team Cal will ever put on the floor while head coach in Lexington. Louisville will be very good once again next season but I don’t see them as a major hurdle on the road to 40-0. They just don’t have anyone who can match the size of the new Cats. Still the game will be an epic matchup of the last two national champions.

4. @Arkansas

Arkansas isn’t a tough opponent in the sense that they will feature a top flight squad of elite athletes but instead possibly the toughest environment the Cats could face all year. Something about Bud Walton arena has become magical for the Hawgs as demonstrated by their 17-1 home record last season. Their only loss came from eventual Final Four member Syracuse. Mike Anderson sure knows how to get his team ready to play in Fayetteville and Cal will need to find a way to do the same. Kentucky won’t face a ton of challenges once they get to SEC play but this one should be a game that gets some extra attention.

3. @ UNC

When the Cats travel to Chapel Hill on December 14th they will be taking part in their first true road game of the season. When you’re dealing with an untested bunch of freshman you just never know how that road environment will affect their play. To date Cal’s teams have been ready to play in the Dean Dome but the game will be against one of the few teams that can match the Cats athletically. If UK can survive this one then 40-0 start looking like a reality.

2. Michigan State

The first test of the year for the boys in Blue will come in Chicago against the top-5 Spartans. Michigan St. is loaded with talent and experience and could derail the team goal before it even gets a chance to begin. Each year the young Cats have faced a similar early test and have found a way to win (UCONN 2009, Kansas) and come up short (DUKE, UCONN 2010) in others. This year could be the hardest start of all but that’s what you can expect when you’re the top team in the land.

1. @Florida

March 8th. The final game of the year. If the Cats can get here unbeaten then they will face a tough final boss in the form of the Florida Gators. Florida is the only team in the SEC that can match UK in talent and will have a rowdy reptile environment in Gainesville. Florida will be the hardest game the Cats could face all year but if they are focused in on going undefeated then it will be hard to derail them. Especially with a year of experience under their belt.

What games do you see as being the biggest hurdle to 40-0?

Regardless of the 5 hurdles you pick, 35-5 would be fine with me as long as we win the last one in cowboy stadium next April!

Arkansas, Florida, and Louisville will be no problem. Neither will Baylor. UNC may pose a problem, but in the end, I don’t think so. Michigan state will be the hardest. What about Mizzou?

If they really put more emphasis on hand checking and grabbing on defense, UL isnt going to be a top 5 matchup…they wont even be able to guard us if those fouls are actually called.

40 and 0 will never happen agian. I don’t see Cal letting it happen. As we have seen in 1996 and 12 I late season loss can be a good thing to ground a team. We are about NC we have plenty of wins.

Louisville football fans and UK basketball fans are equally delusional about dreams of an undefeated season. There are so many dynamics that converge to make perfection extraordinarily difficult even for the best of teams. Look at Alabama–they won the football national championship, but they didn’t go undefeated! You have to have not only incredibly good talent, but also incredibly good luck, incredibly good health, and at least a game or two where you are able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. U of L football and UK basketball will both have great seasons, but neither will go undefeated!

8 – Did you even read the USA Today article? They were nothing alike except in subject matter. They didn’t even pick all the same games. If you don’t think this subject is going to be written about by many writers since the schedule came out today then you don’t know much about the news business. If Andrew had actually stolen the article it would have been much more similar to the USA Today article.
1, 3 – I didn’t see it anywhere on the Detroit Free Press website and I did a search. The only recent thing it had about UK Basketball was about James Young being admitted to UK academically.

Really? You think Arkansas will be a tougher game for us than Louisville and that last year’s team is the worst that we’ll “ever” have while Cal is here? Your credibility is completely gone

I agree with your thoughts on the Arkansas/Louisville thing, but do you honestly think Cal will ever have a team here worse than last seasons?? I highly doubt that will happen.

this team has so much in common with the 2012 team that won the championship, only thing different is this team has way more talent. Let’s get this show on the road. for those that think a loss is a good thing, are most likely used to losing. Never in my life thought losing at anything was good so bring on perfection 40-0 starts with believing and having the talent and personnel to do so.

26-5 n regular season Mich St will get us just because its early n the season and we will lose some here n there, maybe Louisville, Unc or at Fl and then somebody else will get us n the SEC.
Still we cut down nets n Dallas

24 – I disagree. UF will be pretty nasty next year if they have Walker eligible against us.

20 – I also disagree with you. UL’s football schedule this year is ridiculously easy. It’s possible for them to go undefeated. Almost easily…

  32. Lcat

This is just silly. UK will not go 40 and 0. I figure at least 4 losses. A final 4 maybe. UK fans live in a fantasy world!!!

  33. bigcatstanding

This team will ya will go undefeated, if not they will scare undefeated to death, anyone that’s projecting four and five losses has no idea the talent on this team. The only reason they might have one loss is because of not keeping their focus, but with all the players, playing their tails off to get playing time, how could that even happened. Good god you people crack me up saying this team 5 or 6 losses. I would bet if true fans from any other team were given truth serum they would say the same, the same being this team is outrageous and shouldn’t lose a game. do you realize how close they came to being undefeated in 2012 home cooking at Indiana and a last second shot, and a SEC Tournament loss that I am pretty sure they would have won, knowing they were going for the undefeated season at that time.

#28 I agree with you getting past Michigan State is big, also our first true road game against North Carolina, after that just play as a team and keep their focus then undefeated is in our grasp.

#22 your credibility is absolutely gone, last year’s team is by far going to be Calipari worst. The team last year had too many me player not enough players willing to sacrifice, problem with that was we had no bench and had to stick with those kids. I’m pretty sure when we played Robert Morris John Calipari sitting out 2 starters for the entire game was a message for the future, giving up a game in the tournament to get his future players and present players attention.

#39. finally someone with some damn sense, this team if they dedicate their selfs and play unselfish, could rewrite the history books, not because of luck or any genie in a bottle because of the tremendous amount of talent.
