The Field General

This is NOT the proper way to pick Quarterbacks.

I know the spring game was great from a fan perspective, and the crowd itself has been shown countless times.  Listen #BBN, the turnout for the scrimmage itself was awesome, and it got people talking.  The season is still over a hundred days away (check out KSR College for a real-time countdown) but even now Kentucky football is getting a lot more attention than in years past.  While everything seems to be heading in the right direction for Stoops and company, I want to remind everyone that program success is still decided ON THE FIELD AND NOT IN THE STANDS.  Kentucky fans will win any tailgate, any time, anywhere, but the trend has been that the on the field product has been a total joke.  With all of the hype that surrounded filling CWS for the Spring Game, I really hope that Stoops puts a team out there that isn’t the laughing stock of the SEC.

From what I’ve seen so far, the Cats are no longer at the very bottom of the barrel, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.  Don’t fret, the fan support is there and the talent level is improving, but now it’s time for Stoops to do his FOOTBALL thing and let the media worry about promoting his team.  First thing’s first though: THE CATS NEED A QUARTERBACK (if I gave you a dollar you can keep most of the change, cus’ all we really want is a Quarter back…. thank you Shane Falco).   The quarterback position is a lot like playing point guard in basketball; he has to be an extension of the HC/OC on the field and must maintain total control of what’s happening at all times.  This is the one position on the field where composure will trump talent… but talent doesn’t hurt.

“The guy who’s been there”

“The play-maker”

“The Darius Miller”

No, this is not a dating show (and especially not related to the Bachelor) this is the Bluegrass QB Battle, and it will be this battle that will set the tone for the entire season (no pressure, guys).  Coach Brown and Coach Stoops have kept a tight lid on their thoughts and they have made it clear that no starter will be named until after the conclusion of fall camp, so the rest of us common folk are left with nothing but mere speculation until then.  But I’ll say it now: while any of these guys are very capable of leading the team as they all have a particular skill set, Jalen Whitlow is the BEST FIT FOR THE NEAL BROWN SYSTEM.  The spring game provided a simplified glimpse of the offense: read option, intermediate passing game, and quick screens.  The “soft opening” on April 13th did show some themes of what the coaching staff wants to do this season, and it seems to rely on getting the ball to play makers in space and letting them simply “make plays.”  Whitlow showed great consistency and the ability to make plays with both his arms and his legs, and that double threat capability is perfect for Brown’s system.

So yes, Whitlow did emerge the EARLY front runner for the spot, but in all reality that means very little.  Both Smith and Towles are VERY capable of taking the spot and being successful within this (admittedly very fun) system.  Finally #BBN… instead of a lack of talented options, Kentucky has a plethora.  That’s not such a bad thing, and as Coach Brown has indicated, all of the QB’s are pulling for one another to succeed.  Healthy competition will breed positive results… it’s capitalism folks, and it works.

Yesterday morning on WLAP, Larry Vaught said Whitlow and Smith were the two battling it out. Towles can improve, but will only have about 2 weeks during August to close the gap.

Could it be?? No more Corey Nichols at 9:00am?? It’s my hope that this is the case.

Whitlow this year. Next year he gets pushed by Phillips and Barker. Barker has narrowed to UK, South Carolina and the Vols (not a chance). Look for Barker to stay in his home state!

Maybe not, but if I was the quarterback I’d pick that for my center.

Unlike the previous regime, I trust the coaching staff will make the right move. If you twisted my arm, I would predict Smith as the starter, but I would be happy with Whitlow. I know people are anxious to move to Towles, and every year he’s benched increases the likelihood he’ll transfer, but you can’t operate a team that way. He has work to do to catch up.

Thank goodness you closed with the Republican stance….the whole piece starting off crappy for a Monday morning reminding us the team perpetually sucks and then you reminded us, through capitalism, anything is possible. #SEC Champs.

Whitlow isnt necessarily a perfect fit for this offense… brown has never had a great runner at qb in all of his past offenses so im not sure where u get that from… max smith is of now the leader for the job… everyone is going off of the one game that uve seen this year and totally not thinking about all of the practices…whitlow has completely turned it around for sure but he is not the leader as of now

    10) You beat me to it. You are exactly right. Brown never had quarterbacks that broke records in rushing. His quarterbacks and Mumme’s quarterbacks are drop back, pocket passers. Their system is designed to get it to playmakers in space and see what happens. Thats the reason they have to have 40 receivers.JK.

Oh wait, you mean all the stuff that fans hated about Joker/Randy Sanders offense? If I had a nickel for every fan that ranted about bubble screens last year I’d be rich. And what did they run a dozen times or more in the B/W scrimmage? Yep.

im wondering what some of you are looking at. nathan, rick, and others…whitlow has been the best QB the whole spring by far…he has learned the offense quicker, higher completion %, quicker release, stronger arm…by the way did i mention he is the fastest QB in the SEC or maybe the country..4.3 fourty guy. So lets sit back and watch this team grow into a contender in the SEC.

Don’t want to throw a wet blanket on the Whitlow lovefest, but almost ALL who have posted on various sites have overlooked some basic facts from the Spring Game based on it’s format (WHITE was 1’s vs 1’s and BLUE was 2’s vs 2’s). At the UK Athletics site the individual stats show that while leading the WHITE team Whitlow was 9/16 for 107 yds and Smith was 10/14 with 110 yds (nearly identical with SLIGHT edge in yds and accuracy to Smith). Whitlow also hit 8/12 for 86 yds for the BLUE team (vs 2nd team defense) so his “overall” passing stats are “inflated” unless broken down this way. And as for his running stats (the reason folks say he is a better “dual threat” than Smith) he had 58 yds on 5 rushes vs the BLUE team (2nd string) and rushed twice vs the WHITE team (presumed starters) for a total of MINUS 8 YDS. Over half of the SEC teams we will play (plus UL) will have a better 1st team defense that ours, so until Whitlow proves he can successfully run vs THOSE defenses we are better off starting the QB with the best passing accuracy and quickest decision making (currently Smith). This offense can be EXTRA lethal with a QB like “Johnny Football”, but Whitlow ain’t him yet!

ok jmlowe7 not trying to be a whitlow defender but if you was a uk fan last yr you should have seen whitlow against some of the top defenses in the country, S.C, Georgia, and other…i do recall a 18 yr old true freshman facing down those top defenses running and passing with some awfull coaches calling plays. so are you still asking can he run on SEC defenses? keep in mind people whitlow will only get better! his high school offense was a running offense with some pass mixed in…sky is the limit with this guy

Comparing Towles to Darius Miller is a slap in the face to Miller. He is clearly over rated. He came in being this elite QB and he is currently third on the depth chart with a shot at being no.4 or 5 before it’s said and done. Phillips looked mechanically better that Towles and Barker will jump in line when he gets here. Somebody better start pulling some strings for this kids family tree or whinning to the press. Daddy Towles might wish Joker would have taken this kid with him.

Cant really see how Jalen is the answer at QB other than his legs. Kids throwing motion is terrible, not to mention he can’t make every throw on the field. If its anyone other than Max or Patty ICE id be surprised.

Maxwell Smith will be a star in this system. Look for him to lead the league in passing yardage. He was so impressive that the previous staff scraped their entire offensive philosophy to fit his strengths. I know everyone is going to say, well that was last years staff so what do you expect. I’ll just say this, Randy Sanders knows a thing or two about quarterbacks and if he had that much confidence in Max then that is enough for me.

31 and 32 u dont know anything about the QB position or spunds like even football. Towles has the only funky throwing motion..whitlow has the only nfl arm and makes all the throws…if u dont know why even comment on the subject? Max has the weakest arm by far on any of the QBs and late with his throws….thats why he has many ints last yr and spring. Dont know why some of u dont wont whitlow but he has real talent. Max is very mature vs the other QBs and the 3rd best…Phillips is number 2
