The Fab Melo Non-Profile and Other Recruiting News

Before I get to the important news of the day I want to make sure that we get something straight about this summer’s recruiting ventures by John Calipari. Many of the recruits that he goes after, even the ones that he was recruiting to Memphis, he will be having to play catch up on.  He’ll be dealing with a kid who is already familiar with other school’s coaches and, in many cases, has already taken multiple unofficial visits to their campus. The kids that he was recruiting to Memphis will have to familiarize themselves with a new team and a new campus. Don’t underestimate this task because most kids place familiarity with the campus and its “home-like” environment high on their lists. Remember that they are still pretty young when they commit and this will be their first time living away from home, so the atmosphere of the campus is important to them.

Therefore, I will not be doing a complete profile on Fab Melo yet.  I wouldn’t want to give the UL fans that much satisfaction if he commits to their school soon and I did a profile on the player. If you remember from my post on Monday, I had said that Jerry Meyer had previously commented on the fact that he believes that Calipari would get involved with the big man but I had no hard evidence to back any of those statements from Melo’s side yet.  Calipari had been to watch the Melo play in April but Melo’s camp had not commented on whether or not UK was a school that Melo would seriously consider.  Now they have.

Fab Melo’s coach, Adam Ross, told Insidetheville.com (who is getting a lot of the big news lately) that Melo is planning on making a decision before July but, if he does not, there is one more “mystery school” that he plans on taking a visit to. Its pretty safe to say that that school is UK, if you take the comments in context. You can look at June as more of a “getting to know you” period for Calipari and Melo and I would think that, if Melo finds that he is comfortable with Calipari, then he will extend his decision and take the visit. Much like the Marquis Teague commitment, if you hear that Melo is delaying his decision then you have to see it as good news for UK.

Most of the commentators believe that the Melo hunt is being led by Louisville and Connecticut with Syracuse and Florida behind them.  Melo is a 6-11 270 pound big man, who has quick feet around the rim and the ability to finish with a soft touch.  Most importantly, for Cal’s offense, Melo has good range on his jump shot and has the ability to face the basket, drive and finish.   While he has the skills to make the outlet pass and run the floor, he will most likely need to work on his conditioning a little more if he wants to play in an up-tempo offense. Scout ranks him as the #5 center in his class, while Rivals tabs him at #3.

Now I’m going to add a video to the bottom of this post.  That video, taken together with the information given above, may look a lot like a profile but for all you trolling UL fans, THIS IS NOT A PROFILE.  We are just looking at the kid and, if he ends up committing to UL in June, we were never that interested and Cal never really had enough time to call it “recruiting” anyways. He was just saying hi and we were just seeing who he was saying hi to.

Other Recruiting Links:

Interesting bit of news…oddly enough Aaron Craft’s favorite composer is also Erich Wolfgang Korngold, he too won a spaniel puppy when he was but a child for 50 cents, but, alas, his favorite color is not green but orange….or is it?  Aaron Craft, the #18 ranked point guard in the 2010 class, has decommitted from Tennessee citing distance issues. (If you have no idea what I was talking about there, go back and watch “Brian the Intern’s video audition” from Matt’s earlier post)

–  Keala King, who recently noted UK’s interest, continues to get good reviews in this run down of the weekend’s action by ESPN which includes other UK recruits.

–  Pelphrey and the Hogs are getting a tranfer from Iowa.

–  According to this Andy Katz entry, we’ll probably have to deal with Devan Downey and Dominique Archie again this year…or should I say revenge is going to be SWEET!!!

–  Continue to send questions to [email protected] I’ll be answering a few of them on Friday.
