The Fab Five’s Monday News and Views

Wow.  What a weekend that was.  What was a two-day emotional high of basketball greatness came to a bit of a frustrating halt Sunday evening when CBS aired their NCAA Tournament Selection Show and the Cats fell short of where they expected to be seeded.  Before we get started on breaking down all of the insanity and excitment of the weekend that was and the week that will be, let’s stop and salute the Fab Five documentary, which aired on ESPN Sunday night.  Unlike Pete Thamel, who refused to watch because there weren’t enough NCAA violations discussed (seriously), my anticipation of the film was rewarded with a film that was as enjoyable and entertaining as I thought it would be.  It covered all of the trash-talking, baggy short-wearing greatness that defined an era of basketball that was a huge part of the childhood of people of my age, while also noting that there was a man on the grassy knoll in the game against North Carolina (Mike Talley calling a timeout on the bench) and that former Michigan player Rob Pelinka, now Kobe Bryant’s agent, has turned into Christian Laettner’s twin.  And if you still hate Laettner, they said some things about him that would get you filtered in the KSR comments section.  It was an honest and excellent portrayal of a team that will forever remain one of the most memorable of my generation.  The film was a great way to finish off a major weekend of college basketball.

Now onto a few UK notes…

 – Sucking the air right out of what was an infectious feeling of excitement and postseason optimism around the Kentucky world, the NCAA placed the Cats as a #4 seed.  Even worse, they’re the lowest of the four seeds and are placed in the East region with top overall seed Ohio State.  Considering the way the Cats rolled through the season’s final three games and the SEC Tournament, as well as boasting an RPI of 9 and a Strength of Schedule of 12, it seemed like they got shortchanged.  Considering Florida – a team they’ve beaten twice in the last two weeks and whose non-conference schedule is miles short of what Kentucky put together – earned a two-seed, it seems completely ridiculous.  The NCAA committee had the difficult task of wading through 10-15 teams with similar resumes and clearly dropped the ball with Kentucky’s seeding.  When the polls come out Monday, they’ll be in the top-10 or right on the cusp of it.  Their RPI, strength of schedule and Sagarin Rating will be in the same area.  And they’ll be looking at the tournament’s top overall seed in the Sweet 16.  Doesn’t seem like the committee got this right.  No matter how many times they shake Gene Smith’s hand on television.

 – If you were shocked by where the Cats landed in the bracket, you weren’t alone.  Coach Cal said simply, “Wow.” and “It Stinks.”  Cal said that he doesn’t think it’s personal with the Cats, but questioned whether the SEC Tournament results were even equated into the decision to seed the Cats fourth and the Gators second.  In Calipari’s opinion, the bracket was made and the committee had to fill a two and a four with the Cats and, ultimately, just didn’t feel comfortable with putting the Cats as a two-seed.  Calipari expressed frustration with UK’s top-10 RPI earning a four seed and how his team’s resume seemed to be better than the Gators, but said the Cats are not going to sulk.  He called the first round game “hard”, the second round game “really hard” and the potential matchup with Ohio State “impossible”, before adding that he’s going to focus on making sure his team comes to play.  At the end of the day, that’s all you can do.  And with how they’ve been playing right now, that’s not a bad thing.

Here’s a clip of his reaction to Florida’s seeding:

 – Adding even more insult to injury, Kentucky is ranked 10th in the new USA Today/ESPN Poll.  Proving again that the polls mean nothing, the other four seeds are ranked 9th (Texas), 11th (Louisville) and 16th (Wisconsin).  The three seeds are ranked 8th (UConn), 12th (BYU), 14th (Syracuse) and 15th (Purdue).  Full poll here.

 – As far as the entire region goes, Ohio State appears to be the only truly imposing team in the East.  West Virginia in the second round will be an interesting matchup, but you have to like this team’s chances of cracking the 1-3-1.  The teams in the bottom half aren’t world-beaters, except for possibly #2 seed North Carolina, who has the length and size to again present problems for the Cats.  Calipari cited them a few weeks ago as the only team besides the Cats who have improved drastically since the beginning of the year.  If Kentucky can get a rematch with them, they’ve already succeeded.

 – Lost in all of the tournament debate and frustration was the exceptional performance in the SEC Championship game Sunday.  A day after they put together what was probably their most complete game of the season, Kentucky took another major step forward in the SEC title game by clobbering Florida with their defense.  All season long, Coach Cal has talked about trying to get his team to commit to defense and they clearly did so against Florida.  It wasn’t their best game offensively, but they were clearly in control throughout because they were united on defense.  Beating one of the better teams in the country (and a #2 seed!) when they weren’t playing their best basketball is the most positive sign yet that Kentucky has taken the next step toward being an elite team.  Given their draw in the NCAA Tournament, that appears to be an imperative and positive step forward.  They are clearly clicking at the right time.  I would have opted to cut Chandler Parsons hair instead of the nets, but, other than that, it was a great performance by Cal and his team.

 – Coach Cal also expressed pleasure with his team finally finding an identity over the season’s last six games.  Calipari said his team is a “speed team that grinds it out” and that it took him five months to diagnose them.  Better now than never, I guess.  What is most obvious though, is that they’re now completely committed to defense and they’ve added a couple of nice wrinkles to their offense.  They can shoot the ball very well.  They have a player in Brandon Knight who can take over a game.  They have a guy in Darius Miller who can create mismatches and make big shots.  A team that looked so one-sided in the preseason now scores in a variety of ways and is as diverse as their roster can allow.

  – Outside of Lexington, the big NCAA Tournament story in the bluegrass is the matchup between Louisville and Morehead State.  Obvious Pitino jokes and the greatness of Kenneth Faried aside, the game also puts Morehead coach Donnie Tyndall and his swagger on a bigger stage, which is a wonderful thing.  Tyndall said earlier in the week he wanted a matchup with the Cats and, after he was given a date with the Cards, said “we’ll see who the better coach is Thursday” and noted that “our team will fully expect to win the game”.  You have to love that.

 – Each year, the Zapruder-like videos of each NCAA team celebrating their berths provide some great uncensored moments.  Last year, it was the Middle East Tennessee State player grabbing his junk and thrusting at the camera.  Sunday, it was the West Virginia player dipping front and center as WVU’s seed was announced.  The NCAA:  Where stereotypes happen.

 – We’re going to get going heavily on Princeton previews this week, but just know that the Tigers have a player named Hummer and a guy whose mom was on Baywatch.  Though it was only a one episode appearance and she wasn’t a lifeguard, it was still notable enough for Harvard students to chant “Baywatch” at him when they played this week.  And that’s good enough for us.

 – Also, let’s give a quick shoutout to the UK Rifle Team for winning the national championship.  It was the first title of the Mitch Barnhart era.  Hopefully the second is coming in just about a month.

 – Don’t forget to register for the KSTV Championship Challenge.  Filling out a bracket can earn you a shot at winning a Samsung 40″ television.  Not a bad deal.

That’s it for now.  Stick around throughout the day as we get you going with the NCAA Tournament coverage.  Matt will be back in studio for Kentucky Sports Radio at 10am on Talk Radio 1080 to discuss a huge weekend for Kentucky.  In the meantime, let’s bid a final farewell to a great weekend in Catlanta. catlanta

See you in a few…

Am I the only one that is ready to roll through the NCAA tournament? This is the weakest field EVER since expansion, with no teams that are looking invincible. The Cats are playing loose and with the swagger that you love to see in March. Will we win it all? I can’t say, but I can say that this is the first year that I have felt genuinely optimistic about that question in a long time, and that includes last year.

    Not personal?

This is the SECOND year in a row with UK and Cal that the tourney seed keeps putting the hardest path before UK while Duke has the easiest path.

    It’s OBVIOUSLY personal. 9th RPI and a FOUR SEED !??!?! WTF ?!?!

WHo here thinks Florida or San Diego State is better than UK? Absolute garbage. First they f***ed us up the Enes, and now this. It’s not a co-incidence.

Just watched the vids of Jorts, Knight, and Miller at We have had many classy, articulate players in our glorious past and these three are right up there with the best. They didn’t have anything derogatory to say to the cameras but you can tell that they’ve got a chip on their shoulders after this seeding. I think we’re in for one of the most special tourney runs we’ve had in a long time.

If you have a second check out our field on the blog page at We did better than Joe Lunardi and actually better than the committee cause we had V Tech and Colorado in instead of U.A.B and VCU. So missing two teams not too bad. So head over there leave a comment or two we would appreciate some thoughts. Go Cats!!

We have a huge and passionate fanbase that would donate and support……. God if I had the money I would run an ad campaign on cbs during the entire tourney, pointing out the obvious uk/cal/duke bias. You know just showing the numbers. Maybe if we all pitched in we could do it. And maybe then it would embarass them. The facts should embarass them. And I’m not just talking seeding, I’m talking Enes vs. Selby, Rose vs. Magette, the whole 9 yards. Maybe it would open people’s eyes and make a little difference, such an ad campaign would certainly be a big topic of discussion during the tourney if pulled off. I’d pitch in would you? 10 bucks from every big blue fan would get it done

I love the idea… and trust me I am right there with you on the points you are making… but, I think running ad’s about that bias will make us look classless and petty. If we do that, we stoop to their level and that makes us just as bad as they are. The best way to stick it to them is to go all out in the tourney and prove we are one of the best teams in the country. If we make it to a final four, the ad’s would be irrelevant. At some point we are going to have to accept the fact the NCAA is completely in love with Duke and Coach K and just move on.

The NCAA Committee is about stocking the tournament full of “intriguing” match-ups first and about appropriately seeding teams second (or third or fourth). They love potential re-matches like ourselves and WVU. There was evidently no scenario that could have played out in the SEC tournament to avoid that game. Another example, have Memphis’ coach play against his alma mater. The NCAA does this cute bullsh*t all the time! Another thing they love to do is stack one region with high profile coaches so that they can say, “Wow this region has 20 final fours represented!” UK gets toyed with more than most teams because we have the best fanbase and a lot of tv viewership.

This seed made me feel like I lost my best friend. I swear that in years someone from the selection committee will come out and say they messed up and accidently switched Florida and the Cats and didn’t realize it until it was announced. We could not have received a worse draw, I’d rather have Michigan State’s 10 seed. The only team that we could not win a best of 7 or at least take it 7 is Ohio State.

I watched the Fab-5 and was reminded of everything that’s wrong with College Basketball. Grown men paying players and the overt racism (yes- reverse racism is still racism) is not the way to go about building a color-blind society that we’re told is the ultimate goal.

Now – on to the NCAA seeding.

I thought UK was deserving of a possible 3 seed, but a four is not that disappointing on the surface.

However, in light of UNCONN getting a 3 and Florida getting a 2 – the selection committee left itself with a lot of explaining to do – but in the end – that committee is not accountable to anyone – which makes the situation one they’re apt to repeat in future years.

I don’t have a real issues with any of the 1 seeds, although Duke and Pitt are both questionable – the problem is – outside of Kansas and Ohio State, there really is a logjam of other really good teams and Duke and Pitt had as solid a resume as any others that could make a case for a 1-seed.

I hate that Louisville and Morehead are playing in the opening round – a repeat of two years ago when the Eagles and Cards had to play early on. I remember UK having to play EKU a few years ago in the first round and it’s rough having to root against other state schools. Would much rather have seen Morehead go up against someone else early on.

34 Your posts usually get on my nerves because you dont like Cal, but I feel the need to respond this time. Where in the Fab Five was there “reverse racism”? If anything at all racist was in the doc. it was everyone writing Fischer and all that using the N word, and calling Fisher bad names for being jewish. I bet your 40ish and obviously white, and all you took from that was reverse racism. The idea of reverse racsism is fake any way. Yes there can be bad black people who hate white people, but its the dominant culture who are the only ones who are capable of being racist. Race is all fake any way as we are all African Americans since Civilization started there. This just further shows the hypocrisy of the NCAA !!!! We better get used to this because the NCAA is going to always find a way to screw over Cal & UK any opportunity they get in the future. Cal is getting too many good recruits, pissing too many other schools & their admin off. Since the selection committee selecting these teams are from other schools (i.e Ohio State), expect this to keep happening to UK. This is just a blatant slap in the face; it’s nothing more than the NCAA sending Cal & UK a message, you’re getting too big, and this is how we are going to control you !!

That draw sucks, especially when you consider Florida got a 2. The worst part was having to listen to Gene Smith, the head of the selection committee, comment on seedings. It diminished the little amount of faith I had in those guys. He said that all the members of the committee have different criteria for selection, said UK “slid” at the end(?!?!?!?!), and when asked about Florida, said that “we feel they deserved the 4 seed.”

I know this is probably a ridiculous theory, but I honestly believe that the committee accidentally switched UK and UF on the bracket sent to CBS. If you switch us and UF, there would be a potential Ohio State-Florida rematch in the Sweet 16, and a game with us either playing UCLA or Mich. St. And you know the NCAA loves their “sexy” TV matchups. They really F’ed this one up.

I mean it’s obvious that they didn’t take all games into consideration on seeds if they did Ky and fla would have both been 3 seeds there is no way we get a 4 seed with our 2-1 record agaist fla and they get a 2 seed no way with our RPI and SOS we get a 4 seed in the Tourny with our record agaist Top 50 RPI teams and if it”s the I test they should be using with six straight wins to end the season 3 of them agaist top 25 teams that we were hosed by the NCAA I really think something needs to be done but the only they that can be done is that ESPN take over college basketball and get away from the Currupt NCAA and Mark aka I”m the downfall of the NCAA Emmert and his taliban type leadership do what I say not what I do. We are kinda lazy, and really dont want to mess with all that changing, and we hate UK anyway so just screw them. If this was a different team I believe they would have took the time to fix it. I also think our championship game on Sunday was one of the biggest factors in us getting screwed. Other schools our getting a extra day of rest then the SEC, that by itself should be reason for change.

Why is it than any black American who happens to come from a middle-income family, or who chooses to vote conservative, or who doesn’t toe the Al Sharpton/Jessie Jackson line is called an “Uncle Tom” – That is blantant racism.

Granted – Rose said he has tempered somewhat his opinion and spoke back then as an 18-year-old – but DUKE and other schools constantly get criticized here and elsewhere because they happen to have white players.

Why can’t fans simply enjoy the game, paying little attention to what color the players are, and just applaud the efforts of those who step onto the court.

every single white person who has ever accused a black of being a ‘reverse racist’ is automatically a racist. Doesn’t mean reverse racism doesn’t exist, but the people who consistently pull that card are always, ALWAYS, racists. Like all stupid people, their only strategy of self-defense (in this case, defending their closet racism) is the mirror image of what they are being accused of, ie the I know you are but what am I? strategy. This essentially sums up conservative political thought.

To think that only the dominate culture can be racist is so absurd. A racist is someone who doesn’t like a certain race of people because of their race. Pretty simple huh? If I look at a black man and don’t like him because he’s black then that would qualify me as a racist. Same goes for any other race. Not liking someone is not being racist unless their race is the reason for not liking them. I have met people of a lot of different races that I like, and also some that I don’t like. Doesn’t make me racist. I believe one cannot be judged by the color of his skin. I am a firm believer that actions speak louder than color.

53 Does that mean that any black person that says a white person is racist is automatically racist as well. When you read a story of someone that committed a crime against someone because of their race, then that person is a racist. And, it doesn’t make me a racist for saying that.

All i know is Kentucky fans get too touchy when it comes to race. I don’t know if that stems from this team’s history or the demographic of the fans. People will have their opinions and it is what it is but try not to over analyze. Go cats.

We took into account that UK had home games in the SECT and UK had to beat only one ranked team to win it. We also were not impressed with how the refs gave UK like 25 more free throws than Florida.

The only logical excuse, outside of the fact that the NCAA hates our dominance on the collegiate level(and coach Cal), is that the bracket was made up before the game was even played yesterday. They assumed Florida would win, and when they lost it was too late, brackett already made and turned in. The NCAA screwed Enes to try to derail our season and know they do this, it is obvious to me and anyone who actually takes the time to look at the situations. The problem I have is that they continue to get away with this at the expense of young men who strive to do the right thing and do their best and get screwed for their effort. There has to be someone to govern the mistakes that are made and to justify decisions that could ultimately effect someones future. The NCAA gets away with this time and time again and their is no reprecussion. I have always been a cat fan and have become used to the hatred and unfair treatment by other teams and by the NCAA, but something has to be done, asking for a fair shake is not unreasonable is it? There needs to be a board of committes with represintatives from each conference to pass or veto any judgement made by the HEAD committee. This year for Kentucky has been the most effident for the hatred that the NCAA has for Kentucky, no one can deny this given the facts!

Relax Cat fans. I needed something to motivate my players so I told them to seed us forth. After we ankle break Princeton and run through the Clemson press, we will take down an OSU team that is about as deep as we are. Even with Sulkingirl, they are one of the worst rebounding teams in the NCAA. Then it’s on to spank the Baby Blues. No home cookin to help them get 37 FT’s in Newark.

I got an idea, lets storm the castle in Indy and raise hell bout all the injustice that has been done to the cats in the past 12 months! Do what, we have already done that; well no wonder we got shafted. I do not share Calipari’s belief that this was not personal. This was the NCAA smacking our hands for getting out of line on the Enes stuff among other things. I think we need to go forward in silence because if we dont, they will just shaft us next year when we should be the overall No 1 seed. As far as Mr. Smith goes, I dont if he has a severe lack of respect for our team or if he was just trying not to show favoritism to his precious buckeyes. It is doesnt matter really cause we are going to beat them all. I sure do miss C.M. Newton on that committee though. He didnt care what it looked like to the rest of the country.

Will the people who constantly say, “Seeding doesn’t matter, you got to beat the best to win it all” please shut the hell up. Are you serious? The Draw is EVERYTHING. It takes a ton of luck to win it all, and the path you take and the teams you might get to avoid until the the very end makes all the difference in the world. Prime example: Duke last year. Upsets fell just right for them and they got to play Butler in the title game. The Cats would be crushed Duke and absolutely destroyed Butler for #8 lasy year.

Coach Cal is right. They did seed Kentucky before the SEC tourney was over. That HAS to be what they did, because they have us as the 16th overall seed, which is exactly where we were ranked prior to winning the SEC tourney. That’s about as proof positive as you can get with circumstantial evidence…

It’s crazy for Florida to be a 2 and us a 4, considering we beat them twice in the last week (with the second game not even close by the end), us having a better RPI, better non-conference wins, AND only two games separating us in overall record. Crazy. At the most, we should have both been 3’s.

Anyone who doesn’t think racism works both ways should try living somewhere like Durham where they’ll yell “STUPID WHITE BITCH” at your wife. I bet you still think that’s not racist.

  92. The committee obviously didn’t care about the conference tournaments. It shows even more that these conference tourneys are about making money and not about basketball. It seems to me if you’re not going to consider them, then the conferences shouldn’t be allowed to have them.

Another factor may be that the SEC ends on Sunday rather than Saturday, so the committee doesn’t have as much time to give the same consideration to our champion as the Big East and others that finish on Saturday.

91 I couldn’t have said it better. I’m still pissed about our seed, but if you think hard enough jusdt imagine what OSU, WV, Princeton, ect. ect. are thinking. If I’m reading this right ‘Nova may very well play OSU in the second game and OSU maybe looking past that game to the possible game with UK. I watched some of the OSU, Peen St. game and to be honest I’m not sure other than Sulinger if they have the personell to match up with us….But think of it, OSU is in the gym cussing and fretting over the possibilities of having to face us at a time when we’re clicking on all cylinders.

Vitale has it right, the NCAA has GOT to get a Basketball Commissioner to stop what is happening to the college game today. Too many members have agendas, and like in congress everyone has a ear mark for this and that for their beloved schools. Agendas are not supposed to be with an institution that are supposed to be about leveling the “PLAYING FIELD”.

What bothered me most about the wonderful fab 5 documentary was simply another reminder that Kentucky should have beaten Michigan. We were the best team in the tourney that year and would have won, but Dale Brown went flying out of bounds under the table for a loose ball and ended up hurt. I believe he was the best defender and phenomenal shooter. There are also the two quick questionable fouls called on Mashburn late in the 2nd half that changed everything.
