The Coach Cal UK Dream Team

The fine folks over at UK Athletics’ Cat Scratches Blog posed an interesting question to the Big Blue Nation earlier today, so I figured I’d get the input of the KSR readership while this is going around. They asked four writers, and then the Kentucky fanbase on Twitter, what the starting five would be for a “Dream Team” of Coach Cal’s players from his first three years at Kentucky. That’s a period that includes seven first-round draft picks so far, nine overall draft picks, a Final Four and a couple of #1 teams. It’s not easy, but on a Thursday where there isn’t a whole lot going on besides members of the KSR crew journeying toward my neck of the woods in beautiful western Kentucky, it has to be done.

The four writers that Cat Scratches asked to compile their starting fives were Gary Parrish of CBS, Matt May of the Cats Pause, Larry Vaught of the Verizon Droid and Chris Dortch of NBA.com and the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. To see their selections and explanations you can check out the whole article over at UK Athletics, but for right now I’ll give you mine and then turn you loose to tell us yours in the comments section. If you’re on the Twitter like the kids are these days, you can also tweet your team to @UKAthleticsNews with the hashtag “#CoachCalDreamTeam” and you might get a re-tweet from the UK folks. It’s not exactly like getting Patrick Patterson to re-tweet you because your cousin’s sister-in-law stubbed her toe going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but it’s probably the best you’re going to do. Here is my starting five:

John Wall
Brandon Knight
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Anthony Davis
DeMarcus Cousins

Despite Wall and Knight both technically being point guards I think this would be the most explosive backcourt, with Knight edging out Doron Lamb for a starting spot because of his versatility. As far as the front court goes, I don’t think it can get much better. MKG does the dirty work, Boogie gets the points in the post and Davis protects the rim and makes Boogie mad because he keeps jumping higher than him to catch the hundreds of lobs that Wall throws up. They have it all covered.

Mine is actually the same as two of the writers, which makes me wish I had made it a little more interesting, but I can’t think of a five-man squad that I would want more than those guys. You might be able to, and even though your team won’t be better than mine, I still want you to try.

So, readers of KSR…who is the starting five of your #CoachCalDreamTeam?

Patrick Patterson has to be in here. I would rather go with John Wall, B Knight, MKG, PPatt, Davis. I know Demarcus is a beast but I think that starting five would win 9/10 times.

This group would run everybody else out of the gym. They’d average 100 pts a game.

Actually, that is perfect. I was thinking maybe switching out Knight for Lamb, but Knight is probably the better (and more consistent) choice. However next year the SG spot will hopefully be amended to include Shabazz.

Wall, Cousins, MKG and Davis are must-have talents. Hands down have to be on the team. This leaves one spot open, and the team would need some shooting. Knight would be the best option.

PG – Wall is probably the best pure PG of the bunch. Beside, BK can shoot. Teague is not as good as Wall was.
SG – I think this comes down to Lamb and Knight. Bledsoe isn’t even in the conversation. Anyone remember why we lost to WVU? No one could shoot – Bledsoe is not a good shooter. The SG position needs someone who can shoot. That is either BK or DL.
SF – MKG probably earns this over Liggins or Miller. I would like a better shooter here, but MKG sure does it all.
PF – I guess the question is do you want Cuz at C or PF, and do you want him on the floor with all this speed. He has to be on the floot though – he may be the best rebounder in UK history.
    C – Davis/Cuz again – one is the 4 and one is the 5.

I guess the only room for debate as I see it is whether PPat cracks into the 4 or 5 spot, but I don’t see how over Cuz and Davis. Knight v. Lamb is a worthy debate – Lamb is the best 3 pt % shooter in UK history I think.

If you start Wall and MKG, what if we play a good 2-3 zone team like syracuse. Were in trouble. If your goin off pure talent you take Wall. But ill go Knight, lamb, MKG, Cousins and Davis on a collage court. You got speed, defense, hustle, rebounding and shooting.

Does it have to be players he recruited? ’cause I’d want Patterson

    Wall
    Lamb
    MKG
    Patterson
    Davis

Picked Lamb to make up for Wall’s lack of outside shot. Knight, while good, wasn’t as efficient. And MKG just makes things happen. I’d almost pick him before pretty much any player in the last 15 years.
Hard to pick 2 out of Davis, Cousins and Patterson… I just think Davis and Patterson would play the best together and Patterson’s outside shot would make us harder to play.
