The fine folks over at UK Athletics’ Cat Scratches Blog posed an interesting question to the Big Blue Nation earlier today, so I figured I’d get the input of the KSR readership while this is going around. They asked four writers, and then the Kentucky fanbase on Twitter, what the starting five would be for a “Dream Team” of Coach Cal’s players from his first three years at Kentucky. That’s a period that includes seven first-round draft picks so far, nine overall draft picks, a Final Four and a couple of #1 teams. It’s not easy, but on a Thursday where there isn’t a whole lot going on besides members of the KSR crew journeying toward my neck of the woods in beautiful western Kentucky, it has to be done.
The four writers that Cat Scratches asked to compile their starting fives were Gary Parrish of CBS, Matt May of the Cats Pause, Larry Vaught of the Verizon Droid and Chris Dortch of NBA.com and the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. To see their selections and explanations you can check out the whole article over at UK Athletics, but for right now I’ll give you mine and then turn you loose to tell us yours in the comments section. If you’re on the Twitter like the kids are these days, you can also tweet your team to @UKAthleticsNews with the hashtag “#CoachCalDreamTeam” and you might get a re-tweet from the UK folks. It’s not exactly like getting Patrick Patterson to re-tweet you because your cousin’s sister-in-law stubbed her toe going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but it’s probably the best you’re going to do. Here is my starting five:
Despite Wall and Knight both technically being point guards I think this would be the most explosive backcourt, with Knight edging out Doron Lamb for a starting spot because of his versatility. As far as the front court goes, I don’t think it can get much better. MKG does the dirty work, Boogie gets the points in the post and Davis protects the rim and makes Boogie mad because he keeps jumping higher than him to catch the hundreds of lobs that Wall throws up. They have it all covered.
Mine is actually the same as two of the writers, which makes me wish I had made it a little more interesting, but I can’t think of a five-man squad that I would want more than those guys. You might be able to, and even though your team won’t be better than mine, I still want you to try.
So, readers of KSR…who is the starting five of your #CoachCalDreamTeam?
