While you were busy tailgating and thinking “Maybe, just maybe, we’ll win this football game,” the UK women’s soccer team was improving their undefeated record to 4-0-0 . The Cats defeated Southeastern Missouri 1-0, with senior forward Natalie Horner heading in the game winner off a corner kick from Alyssa Telang in the 54th minute. It was the final game of the Tropical Smoothie Invitational, and although both the Cats and the Louisville Cardinals won all their games, the Cardinals were crowned the winners due to a bigger goal differential.
Thumbs up for being undefeated! L-R: Kirsten Robinson, Brooke Keyes, Cassie Ransdell, Natalie Horner, and Alyssa Telang.
The Cats’ domination was apparent on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field. The offense racked up 17 shots (compared to SE Missouri’s 4) and 11 corner kicks. The goal was Horner’s second of the weekend, and Telang earned her first assist of the season. Defense was a strong point as well, as Wildcat goalkeepers Kayla Price and Kayla King combined for the shutout. King didn’t have to face a shot and Price made two saves during her second half of play. Overall, the Cats maintained possession for the majority of the game, which ultimately led them to dominate the shot count.
Three Kentucky players were named to the All-Tournament Team: Horner, sophomore defender Arin Gilliland, and freshman forward Kelli Hubly. The Cats will hopefully bring some honor back to the UK-UL rivalry this Friday when they travel to Louisville to take on the Lady Cardinals at 7:30 pm ET. The Cardinals are ranked #14th and have the same record as UK at 4-0-0. Please, Coach Lipsitz, redeem our side of the rivalry!
