The Bash Brothers of Basketball

From our good friends at, comes the most vicious set of high school basketball fouls one will ever see. The team in white has two players that don’t just foul, they maul. One of them is big and strong and one of them (who I will name Steve-Scott), is a little chunkier and just likes to wail. They go at it with their opponents and take the view that “no blood, no flagrant foul.”

I watched this earlier when it was posted on Yahoo front page. Three of those were pretty bad. But the rest of them wasn’t. The big kid should have definitely been thrown out when he threw a punch literally at the kid when the kid was driving, but the clothesline as bad as it looked, if you slow it down he was going for the ball. It just looked bad because of how fast the play was.

that big fat fu(k should not be aloud to play ball at all!!! Did you see his cocky smirk while he was standing at the foul line? What a jerk. Somehow I just don’t see him doing this to kids his own size. If he tried that sh!t in harlan county he would get his fat a$$ beat down real quick. There is no place in sports for a punk like this. I am a big guy and used my body in sports to my advantage but this punk doesn’t even move his feet to try to make a play. He knocks around kids half his size and thinks it’s funny. I thought bullying was a big deal in school now days? If this ain’t a fat a$$ bully then I don’t know what is. I would love to play one on one with this fat ba$tard!!!!! He would pipe down real quick and probably wouldn’t be able to play ball again. Watching this video really has gotten me really upset. If you think all 6 of those are flagrant then you have never played ball in regions 12-16. I could see 2 of the 6 being called flagrant but the rest were just hard fouls and looked worse than they were because the guy fouling was taller laying down than he is standing up.

    5:59 pm January 5, 2012 Permalink

    11. I agree not many were flagrant, but the close line to the kid is obviously flagrant and dangerous. It is lucky he didn’t break a back. I have had teammated knocked unconscious the same way and think back to how even Evan Turner broke his back landing on it after a dunk. This is dangerous and he should have been ejected after that foul. The others are hard fouls, it is amazing to me the refs let this many pile up in one game, but then you have to remember that most of these small town refs are not making much money. They are not professionals, but they are human and they should realize when they are putting players in danger. The coach should have fully retaliated.

The fat kid has no basketball skills on display in these plays. When he clotheslined the kid, he should have been ejected. Shame on the coach that obviously has him on the floor for the purpose of attempting to cause injury. Shame on the refs for letting it go. Shame on the parents for obviously not telling their evil kid to stop being such a punk. And shame on the kid for being such a worthless piece of trash whose only possible positive contribution to the universe would be to exit it.

Definitely rough play. Foul #2, 42 should have been called for an intentional foul, and 42 should have been tossed for #4. But, It seemed to me that most of the worst looking ones (by 34) were attempts at the ball by a really slow uncoordinated fat kid.

  36. T

    11) you claim you played but you don’t know the difference in flagrant and intentional fouls. Excessive force= flagrant. 1/2 were flagrant, intent doesn’t matter.

  37. Bart Edwards

Whoever put that reel together is a whining puzzy. Only the push (Number 4) was flagrant. These fouls were mostly the result of some skinny wimps meeting up with some corn fed country boys. The main issue for Number 34 was that he is just so fat he can’t jump, so he just plants himself and sticks a fat paw in there and what happens, happens. I don’t even think it looks particularly vicious. In fact, it kind of makes the fat kid look pathetic rather than vicious. I might have called the push flagrant, but the alleged clothesline was just an out of control skinny kid not paying attention and not going up strong. Needs lessons from Harrellson.

The rest were legitimate attempts to make a play by a fat kid better suited to Sumo wrestling than basketball. Very inappropriate and immature comment Matt. This was not awesome in any way. Regardless of the root cause (lack of physical ability or actual intent to harm), there is nothing awesome about the very real danger that kid creates. His coach and the refs should be suspended for allowing him to remain in the game. If he is physically incapable of playing the game better than this, the coach should never allow him on the floor. If one of his “awesome” fouls breaks a kids neck, let’s see if you still want to stand behind your Jim Boeheim like statement of support.

Flagrant fouls? Fouls? Well, y’all have some valid points. I played for Tates Creek back in the day and we had a roady down at Clay Co. in 1988. That footage ain’t sh*t. We messed around went up 3 in the 4th quarter. Coach Keith called a time out and talked to the refs. They went on a W.W.E. run as we proceeded to take our falls, hay makers, ‘bows, and an ‘L’ up out of there for good measure. We were never so glad to see Lexington again! For all the ol’ school concerned UK fans, yes, Richie did play that night by the way. My friend Antoine has the scar to prove it.

I didn’t see what all the hub-bub was about. Yes, if you weigh 130 pounds and try to drive the lane on a 300 pounder, you better not hang your chin out. Other than that, the only lessons to be learned here are to be taken from the grossly ignorant comments of those posting who obviously don’t see much high school ball. You can tell from the attitudes of the players on the court that these fouls are no big deal.

I’ve seen/played/coached a lot of bball and most of the fouls, which were committed by biggie (#34), seem to just be a product of really uncoordinated big guy who has no idea how to play basketball. We all played against that guy at some point. He’s probably a football payer that got talked into playing and has little bball experience. I don’t think his fouls were an intent to hurt anyone. He’s probably just a big fella who got dragged into bball instead of shot-put.

I mean, look at foul #3 for example. It just looks like biggie is super uncoordinated and got worked by a good ball fake. Then he followed through on his air swat and hit the kid. Foul #6 can be chalked up to overbearing uncoordination too. I don’t think most of the fouls were super obvious (except #4, which was by a different guy), but were just a product of a dude having no clue. When you have no clue in football, you can make up for it by going and hitting extra hard. Not so much in basketball. Clearly a new ball player with too much football in him. I think it’s a little bit of an overreaction against the big fella and definitely didn’t deserve a youtube video. Or a KSR post. Or a comment from me for that matter. Dang.

The fat white kid is just that, he is a fat, 5’11” white kid, that has no athleticism, no actual basketball ability (most likely true), so all he does is go in there and make hard fouls. It probably makes him feel like a ‘tough guy’, but in reality, he just does not have any ability. I mean, at least the center on my High School team was 6’7”, and could play.
I would say that most of those are flagrant, just because he was nowhere near getting the ball, and would just make a hard foul, that remotely looked like he was going for it, even though in his head, he ha not intention to.

Anyone on here defending 34 is an idiot. In everyone of his fouls he is going for the head, not the ball. His arm movements are all follow through motions in order to make sure to puts the kids on the ground.I actually saw similar brand played by Betsy Layne High School back around 2000-2001 season. They had 4 or 5 punk kids that would stick there knees out and knee someone going full speed down the court. I saw one of them take his chair when he was benched and threw it into the crowd behind him as hard as he could, and the Coach,Tim Rice, didn’t say a word to that kid or any of the kids. He was scared to death of his own players. It wasn’t just one game it was all games that this type of behavior occured. The kids would all high 5 each other after these attacts.I had a nephew playing on the team and I just stopped going it was sickening to watch.

One foul like that is understandable. Multiple? Clear grounds for ejection. The refs completely mishandled this, and should no longer be refs.

Why isn’t the other team protecting their teammates. They just sat around and watched their teammates get assaulted. I have no problem with physical play but just because you aren’t skilled enough to compete doesn’t mean you get to assault someone.

I’m an old school type that doesn’t like TJ’s flexing and NFL TD celebrations beyond a simple spike and jumping up and down with your teammates, and I think the NFL is taking clean hitting out of the game and should stop it. To add to perspective on me – when I was coaching 13-14 yr old baseball, my player hit a home run, pranced around the bases like he had cured cancer, and I benched him the rest of the game. When a player on the other team did that to my team early in a game, I suggested to my pitcher that Don Drysdale or Bob Gibson would have put that guy on the dirt his next at bat, hoping he would get the hint and throw at him (he’s 14 – I can’t just tell him to throw at the kid – he’ll tell mommy and then it is a Federal case). So I know hard play and am accepting of self policing retaliation as suggested by some here.

Having said that, here are my thoughts FWIW:

Headband’s push was flagrant b/c it was a push with no effort at the ball but not that dangerous. His baseline foul was rough but not outrageous.

But for those defending #34 you’re probably on OJ’s defense team. He was not (just) a dumb fat kid commiting normal rough fouls caused by his lack of athleticism. He was trying to hurt on his fouls. He was throwing his hand at their heads, following through to make sure he made harder contact, and the clothesline was clearly intentional. His effort at the ball was lame in all 3 or 4 examples. And if you don’t believe that watch the video of after the fouls. He never helps the kid he fouls up (normal people, after an unintentional rough foul at least try to break the fall – he helped push the kid to the ground during the clothesline). He walks away from each foul in fact – b/c he could care less if the other kid is ok b/c he intended to hurt the player. Then after the clothesline we get to see him smirk the entire FT b/c he knows he got away with it – again – and it was a particularly rough fall compared to the others so he was extra happy. If you can’t read his body language and see that and know they were intentional, then I hope your afterlife in helk is playing pickup ball with that kid on an outdoor blacktop court.

Were they the hardest fouls in the world? No – but they were done intentionally I am convinced and with the intent to hurt the other player. That is never acceptable behavior (unless you are throwing at a batter, especially Barry Bonds, to make a point – that used to be the way baseball was played – or of course you are retaliating for another flagerant play against the same person that did it – not his teammate).

I will add that when the refs don’t stop dangerous roughness, and that is what that was in the video, then kids get hurt. And that isn’t the ok.

The coach needs to be fired for allowing that play to continue. The refs should also be fired for blatantly ignoring the risk to the other team. My personal preference, in addition to the above suggestions, would be for someone to take the kid’s knee out so that he couldn’t possibly ever play basketball again.

“flagrant” foul 4 could have been a foul on the other team… The guy who gets shoved is blocking out on a loose ball. Granted the two armed shove is a bit much, but you can’t block out like that on a loose ball.

FIRST: Those kid’s (the ones who were on the receiving end of these fouls)teammates should be ashamed of themselves for not standing up for each other.

SECOND: They’re lucky they weren’t playing an inner-city school, b/c there would have been a bench clearing brawl after the first foul shown here.
