The Architect’s Newspaper explores the Rupp renovation

We haven’t heard much from the Rupp Arena renovation crew lately, but the Architect’s Newspaper has a brief overview of where the project stands and how it will include uncovering a creek that has been buried for over 100 years.  The hope is to revive the Town Branch creek and incorporate it into a new and improved downtown layout.

The five design teams that are currently working on the project will present their proposals on February 1, following a symposium organized by the University of Kentucky.  We should expect to know more from there.

You can enjoy this rendering of a park until then.

How could anybody still have the cats in the tourn. This team will get crushed in the first round of the NIT. This is one of the 4 worst teams in the SEC and this year that is saying something. Why are we still drinking the kool aid and can’t just call it like it is. This team has another 6-7 loses in them.

Uncovering the town branch creek would be really cool. That would connect the town branch bourbon to its back story.

Everybody’s only comeback is man your stupid what are you talking about. Tell me how. This team won’t beat a single team this year that makes the tourn. Why should they make it. You can’t go 500 in the SEC and just get in because we are UK.

Architect here. The renderings look thought provoking… and it sounds like a legitimate and do-able scenario. One thing…. where are you planning on parking for those 20+k going to the game. I lived on Broadway, so I know the game day traffic BS.
The renderings wipe out all the surface lots people use. It paints a nice picture to clean that slate, but you have to put those cars somewhere.

#3 How can you say we can’t beat a single team that makes the tournament? When we played the #1 team in the country to one possession. We have a lot to improve, but if there is one person I believe in it is Cal. I still believe he will get to Poythress and we will be dangerous come tournament time

Yes, put the creek back. That will be a huge help with recruiting. If we had the creek, we might have gotten Shabazz and we’d be undefeated. The power of water cannot be underestimated. Although I think the park there will just draw pedophiles and undercover cops.
And (12) there is a large flock of seagulls living on North Broadway in this old house near Transy. A fellow there breeds them and let’s them fly free throughout the day. They return home at night and live in his attic. I’m sure the artist rendering took this into account.

It sounds like a great idea to have the creek back running through the middle of town, but when it begins to flow with the stock-yard overflow and fills the entire downtown with the wonderful arom of bovine excrement maybe we will have second thoughts. There are more than one reason it was put under ground to begin with.

Appropo that we may include a creek in the new design as this year’s team certainly finds itself up one.

I for one will be sorely disappointed if the creek does not include a trailer on its banks with a straight pipe leading to the creek. Also, lots of trash bags/diapers/Mountain Dew bottles on the banks. No way it’s a legitimate Kentucky creek otherwise. At least that’s how they are back home in Letcher County.

I’ve always thought Rupp had it backwards in terms of what they use as the “front door” especially from the tv POV. The lower street view by the restaurants and fountain should be the main entrance to rupp and one they should focus on. The back door looks like a damn factory entrance not an entrance to the mecca of college basketball. More like the mecca of machine stamping. They should close off all traffic surrounding the fountain and make it a centralized congregating area outside, the bars can open up to the streets and you have a great environment for a game. This would eliminate the need for 1000’s of people to hover up together in the small Hyatt lobby to slam as many beers as they can before they head into the game.

Um, #29 (On second thought), I actually flow east to west thru downtown, which makes the stockyards downstream of Rupp Arena and downtown, so no stockyard overflow will be flowing upstream into downtown. The fact that I only carry a trickle of water most of the year may be an issue, however….

    2:32 pm January 15, 2013 Permalink

29 – It probably won’t be a true resurrection of the creek, but more of a symbolic type of water feature going through downtown.

    37. Not sure that there is a “front door” at Rupp. More people tend to use the “back door” because that is where the majority of the parking is…. Since the entrance to Rupp is inside the Civic Center….. Please feel free to use any door to enter the Civic Center that you want.
