University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

That’s just mean, L.J. Peak

Hats have a special place in basketball. The first thing a high school recruit does after announcing his college of choice is put his new school’s cap, and likewise, the first thing college players do when drafted is don their new team’s colors. Hats have become such an integral part of the college recruiting process that media and fans like to guess which school a recruit will choose by where the hat is placed on the table at the announcement. In recent years, the “hat trick” has been a popular trick for prospects to play, drawing out their announcement by faking a reach towards one school’s hat and switching to their true choice’s at the last minute (remember Terrence Jones?). And while that’s all fun and games, if a little bit melodramatic, Georgetown commit LJ Peak may have taken it a little too far.

As you can see in the video above, Peak and his buddy Shaq Davidson (a highly touted football recruit) stood up in front of a pro-Gamecock crowd in Gaffney, South Carolina and pulled on South Carolina hats to raucous applause. Except Peak threw his to the ground after a moment and pulled out a Georgetown hat. Awwwkward.

According to the Greenville News, the ruse was surprise even to Davidson, as the two had talked about going to school together for years:

“We talked about it, but I didn’t think he would go through with it,” said Davidson, who appeared to be shocked as Peak discarded the cap. “Everybody was cheering and then…”

I’m all for letting these kids have their moment, but did Peak go too far? At what point does a trick just become cruel?

Can you blame the kid? Georgetown or USC? For b-ball it’s an easy decision. I liked this very much so. If wiggins woulda done that to a Kansas hat you guys at KSR woulda been off his jock.

4 – youre an idiot, Shaq (his friend) played fball, not him. 2, quit being a troll. I liked it, but I’m a big jokester. If the crowd gets mad, thats their own fault, he didnt have the hat on yet. Kudos for making the most out of his moment.

    Yep, he went too far.
Uncalled for. This is another example of how blown out of proportion this college announcement process and high school athlete’s egos have become…
He’s an 18 year old kid though–made a mistake. I made about a billion of them when I was 18.

I am sick of all these high school athlete’s egos myself #9. They act like they think the world owes them something, but I look at it from the standpoint of “pride cometh before a fall.”

How could his parents sitting right next to him allow him to look like such a fool? My question is why would Georgetown want him to attend their higher education university as their representative?

The problem here isn’t that the kid had some fun with his announcement- it is that we have created a sports culture in college athletics where adults (both fans and coaches) are so invested in their decisions that an entire business revolves around tracking them, hanging on every word and tweet, and have entirely too great an investment in the process. They are kids. Leave it alone. The problem is ours – not his.

For the record – I agree that he probably acted childish- but again, I think we have to look at a culture of hero worship and ego boosting by fans, coaches, recruiting services, etc. that kiss these kids’ butts for years. How else would be expect them to act? We are reaping what we sowed

yea this kid is not mature or right in the head. Even tho I like that it happened to the SC coach! We make too much out of these kids signings anyway, all of us are guilty in one phase or another.

Apparently no one on here was ever 18. This is out of hand but stop acting high and mighty. If you were in that position at 18 you’d have done the same if you would have thought of it.

Could GT possibly STILL want him after that? I hope he isn’t a point guard, because decision making isn’t going to be his strong suit. Embarrassed for him.
