Terrence Jones arrested for stomping on homeless man’s leg

130731-Terrence-JonesTerrence Jones’ mugshot from the Multnomah County Jail

According to KATU in Portland, Oregon, Terrence Jones was arrested at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning after police said he yelled at a homeless man and stomped on his leg. The former Cat and current Houston Rocket was charged with harassment and is due in court next Tuesday.

Police observed Jones and a group of people walk away from a bar, and Jones stop by a doorway where two homeless men were sleeping. According to the sergeant who witnessed it, Jones yelled “Wake up,” then raised his leg and stomped down on one of the man’s legs. The victim received a minor leg injury.

Say it ain’t so, TJ…

Just because Terrence is wealthy doesn’t mean this guy is going to walk away with a bunch of cash. You have to have a legitimate claim to win a civil suit and this guy doesn’t have much of one beyond four or five figures at best. Having said that if the story is true TJ needs a lesson in humility. I say if because with cops as witnesses I’m actually less inclined to believe the story as reported.

Really disappointing. I’m not going to defend him, because there is no defense for this really. But… I have known a lot of young (and old) drunk people that have done stupid things. I’m sure he thought he was being funny and I’m also willing to bet he didn’t really hurt this guy. This should be a wake up call for TJ and hopefully he’ll bounce back (hat tip Coach Cal) and make better decisions in the future.

In some way maybe this will turn out to be a blessing for the homeless guy. TJ I’m sure will end up settling for some chunk of change to try and make a civil suit and the embarrassment go away. I’m looking for the silver lining here I guess, but hopefully this can help out the homeless guy in the end.

Still [email protected]#!ing bizarre and disappointing though.

#77 you’re reading into my comments. If you’ll see further up in the comments section I mentioned if true it is disappointing. My statement concerning police and the truth has nothing to do with Terrence Jones, the Wildcats or the homeless. It comes from personal experience with the justice system. You may believe that cops are morally and ethically superior to the average citizen and that’s fine. I just hope you or someone you love never finds himself in a situation to see that bubble burst.

  76. classof68
    3:28 pm July 31, 2013 Permalink

77 – miggles. So let’s just hang him right now, because of what a cop says happened? It’s got nothing to do with being a Cat, but everything to do with being a human being. Oh I forgot, the NDAA says us humans no longer have the right to defend ourselves in court.

  77. miggles
    3:33 pm July 31, 2013 Permalink

76 Do Whut? – I wouldn’t say morally superior, but if a cop says he was an eyewitness to something like that, I’m inclined to believe him. Stomping on a homeless person, while deplorable, isn’t likely to get TJ in any huge trouble unless he seriously injured the person. What does a “dirty cop” have to gain by trying to pin something like this on someone like TJ? If he’d tried to say he curbstomped the guy, maybe it would be worth the debate.

77 classof68: Hang him? What did I say that has you thinking that? TJ did something incredibly douchey, and a cop saw it. Whatever consequences follow, TJ completely deserves them.

Bad move by Terrence. But have some patience and understanding at the least. Kick may be a big embellishment and its not as if the homeless man necessarily had a sign over him advertising he was homeless. TJ could have easily just been real drunk and thought the dude laying there had been drinking and passed out too with a little leg kick to wake him up. Just…wait for details, it doesn’t automatically make Jones some ubervillian.

  85. Do whut?
    3:47 pm July 31, 2013 Permalink

#77 again I think you’re reading into what I wrote. I’m not talking about “dirty cops” in the sense of personal financial gain or just getting off on criminal behavior. Some cops exaggerate to make cases. Some cops see an opportunity to be the big dog in the locker room at work by making a high profile arrest and maybe getting their faces on TV. Some cops lie just because they are liars. I’m not saying Terrence didn’t do it but I have zero reason to take an officer’s word merely because it seems silly for him to be lying. It’s funny how Americans take dishonesty of politicians to be a given (most of whom take an oath when taking office) but slap a badge on someone else and take his word as gospel.

I laugh at how so many people just automatically react like they are just so perfect and have never done stupid things — especially in their early 20’s. This is a very immature move by a guy who is still young and learning his way through this world. Terrence is a good kid and was kind to me and my young son when we saw him at a movie theater one night. He stopped and gave my son an autograph, talked to him, and then took a picture. He was a little awkward in doing so, but that just showed his youth IMO. Doing something dumb like this is just another example of that youth. Most of us here in BBN understand you will make mistakes in life Terrence and we still love you. You haven’t done anything seriously bad here and can easily be forgotten by keeping your nose clean. Screw all you haters who just want to kick Terrence to the curb.

I’ll add that we don’t have to look at it from the lying cop paradigm. What was the lighting in the area? Was the cop’s view obstructed? Were there multiple individuals in TJ’s group? UK had nothing to do with what happened. UK is no more responsible for his actions than the guy that cut his hair when he was a kid. He messed up, probably was drinking and has to learn from his experience hopefully.

if things happened as are written above, then TJ can join Daniel Goaltend on the “please don’t come around anymore” list.

I have a story for all of you that say he’s a douche bag. When I was about 25 I was at the movies with 4 chicks. When we got there and were walking through the parking lot we were all lined up and I was on the end. I had a paper wad(dangerous weapon, I know) in my hand to throw away and the girl on the other end said something playing around so I threw it at her. Well, she ducked and I missed and we kept walking. As we entered the front door of the movies this cop comes up to us and gets in my face. He says, “how bout you go pick up that trash before I cite you for littering & attempted vandalism of police property?” I had honestly already forgotten about the paper wad and had no clue what he was even talking about. Said, “sir, I don’t even know what you’re talking about.” He said, “yeah, not so funny or tough when you are face to face, huh?” Myself, “dude, chill. I have no idea.” Cop, “I saw you throw that trash at my squad car!” After looking out and seeing a police car where we had been walking I realized what had happened. Even though the redneck side of me wanted to whip his a$$(if only we could when warranted) I said, “man, I wasn’t even throwing that at your damn car, but I will go pick it up as I should have when I threw it.” He had this look on his face like “yeah, punk! I showed you!”

I know it’s a long, stupid story. Just wanted to give an example of how dumb & overblown some of this crap is that even makes it to the media. I’m not judging TJ based on what was said in this story, or the cop even. Sometimes people honestly think things happen that aren’t even close to reality.

Let’s put this in context here. Clue #1, walking away from a bar. He was obviously drunk or had been drinking. Alcohol does strange things to some people. Some people get silly, some people get mean and some people just get stupid. I’m not justifying TJ’s behavior by any means but i’m willing to bet the guy had been drinking and just done something stupid. I’ve done my share although never stomped on someone for no reason. He needs to learn to either control himself while drinking or not drink at all. Would be interested in his blood alcohol level.

In the end, his actions were one of a stupid, spoiled kid, probably helped by the millions of dollars and general coddling he got in the last ten years of his life thus far. This will haunt him until the day he dies, no matter what he does it will be an asterisk next to his name. I have no doubt the punishment will far outweigh the crime as he’ll lose a ton of money (endorsements), be labelled as a thug and probably will, albeit unfairly, be grouped into conversations with true criminals like Aaron Hernandez. He needs to find a publicist and get in an alcohol program (because blaming behavior on drugs gets you a pass in this society, at times) do some hardcore volunteer work, donate lots of money and hope in a few years it will not define him. As for the short term, he might be lucky to keep his job.
