Ten Weekend Notes (and Morning Radio!)

Looks like Brooks is a John Wall fan too

Ten thoughts on the weekend:

(1): Eric Bledsoe is on his way to becoming a national star. But what is interesting to watch is how easily he wins over people. Go to the WLEX site and watch Cutler’s video on Bledsoe saying being beaten up as a kid made him tough today. He charms the whole media pack in the process.

(2): Saturday’s football win was huge for the program, but also huge for Rich Brooks. He becomes the first coach to take the Cats to four straight bowl games and the relief was evident in his post-game comments. He has built the program the right way and the win was sweet.

(3): I often (as most fans do) complain about the offensive play calling…and for most of Saturday, it was no different. But credit Joker Phillips for dialing up a good set of calls in the second half. Vandy knew UK would run, but they were still able to have success by a creative running sequence alternating the carries in and out of the Wildcat. After a horrid first half, the second made me happy.

(4): I am for the Wildcobb as the name. And while we are at it, I like Andre Ware. He is the best part of the SEC Network coverage in my view.

(5): Jalen Kedrick going to Memphis was a bit of a surprise, at least this early. Kedrick was sort of a second tier UK recruit, but one that would have gotten a huge push if Brandon Knight were to go elsewhere. His commitment to Memphis shows that (a) Pastner can recruit like wildfire and (b) UK’s 2010 recruiting success will hinge solely on reeling in their big targets…the backups have basically found other homes.

(6): You have to hear Alan Cutler and Woo on the podcast (which will be up a bit later tonight). The show overall is a bit more serious than the first two, but their interaction is absolutely priceless.

(7): If you didnt see Brandon Jennings go for 55 Saturday night, then you missed a show. The kid was amazing and in the rarified “zone” that Jodie Meeks hit against Tennessee. It was amazing…what wasnt amazing was watching Kelenna Azubuike hurt his knee early in that game.,.could be out for a long time.

(8): Matt “The Beast” Pilgrim statline in his first real game…10 minutes played, 2 points, 2 rebounds and he fouled out. Beast.

(9): Speaking of former UK beast’s Mark Coury and Cornell beat Alabama. Yes, Mark “Every game is Senior Day” Coury is now at Cornell and in the rotation for the team that is projected to win the Ivy League. Coury had 6 points and 5 rebounds against Alabama in Anthony Grant’s first game. Happy for Mark, who is a great kid.

(10): My favorite note from the game Friday night. Patrick Patterson said he talked to Calipari two days before the game and Calipari said to him that he “had to dominate” and that needed to be his mindset. He credits that talk for his performance against Morehead St. The culture of positivity that Calipari brings has dramatically changed the program, and if he did nothing else, that change has made his hire worthwhile in my view.

If you are around this morning and want to listen to some sports talk, turn on the morning show with Dave Ragone and I on 970 AM or streaming below from 11 am to 1 pm with special guest Dicky Lyons. More all day….
