Eleven Takeaways from Cal’s Rupp Arena Locker Room Tour

Over the weekend, Cal released a video tour of the new Rupp Arena locker room–I’m sorry, suite–on his website. In case you missed it, here are eleven takeaways (it’s too good for just ten):

1. The hallway leading to the “suite” is plastered with pictures of the Calipari Era, with this particularly awesome shot of Eloy.

2. The entrance to the suite includes the first of many pieces of the Final Four floor from New Orleans. This piece is the free throw line where Doron Lamb hit the final free throws to clinch the National Championship.

Is there anything Joe Craft doesn’t have his name on anymore?

3. The centerpiece of the entrance is the National Championship trophy. At this point, how many copies of the trophy are there? I count:

1) One in the Wildcat Coal Lodge case
2) One in the Joe Craft Center
3) One in Cal’s bedroom (come on, you know it’s there)

4. Oh, hello people just casually chilling in the new lounge. This will be the area the football team and other teams can bring recruits in before the game to hang out and socialize.

5. The kitchen/dining area includes a mural of the scene in New Orleans when the buzzer sounded and parts of the court. The area, which can also be used by other sports teams before the game, has a men’s and women’s bathroom. Thanks, Cal!

6. In the team’s meeting and film room, Cal has a whiteboard that takes up the entire wall. Seriously, the entire wall. That may be impressive, but they need to find a better place to store the markers.

Cal says this is the only area he’ll talk to the team in before, during and after the game. The locker room is the players’ space.

7. Bam. The banner is a nice touch.

8. Because Cal doesn’t like clutter, there are lots of cabinets to keep things out of sight. What’s inside one of those cabinets? Plush robes. What is this, the Ritz? The players must think so:

9. In the shower area, there are individual shower stalls (7′, natch). Why? Players don’t like to shower together anymore. Does this mean they’re missing out on some towel-snapping rituals?

Also in the spa shower area: a hot tub (for pregame) and cold tub (for postgame). Notice the UK emblem in the tile? Now that’s detail.

10. Even the assistant coaches have a locker room area. The toilet seat, of course, is up. Will boys never learn?

11. The funniest part of the tour? Cal’s “prop office.” (I see you, Stadium Frame Final Four print!) This space, a mini replica of Cal’s actual office (right down to the balls on the wall), is used only when Cal has recruits visiting. Otherwise he never comes in there. Proof? Check out the empty desk drawers.

Mmm, Diet Coke.

So, when can I move in?

OMG the assistant coaches have a locker room? that is soooo cool. It’s 2012 and we are the first school to have a locker room for assitant coaches. Give me a break. You guys act like we are so up on everyone. I think the locker room sucks. Why only focus on one year of the program? How about showing the people who made Kentucky what it is today.

Ohh the toilet seat rule. I never did understand it having to be always down. That to me leaves up and possibility of me peeing on the seat. If I was a female I’d rather keep it up all the time knowing that pee wasn’t just wiped off of it by you’re drunk cousin and you sit on the seat seconds later ewwwwww.

Why do young kids need to see photos of Rupp or Pitino? Or Dan Issel? Who cares?

Everyone who believes in that “name across the front of the chest” mantra will be in for a sobering awakening once Cal leaves. It will be back to the days of Tubby.

The whole renovation is very classy looking! When they win the next one that floor, if bought and donated, would most likely replace the locker room floor and the New Orleans one could replace the freethrow line at the entrance, or be used in the locker room at Joe Craft Center. There is also a huge room for past players/alumni, that isn’t shown here. To me that’s where you decorate to remember the past all the way back to the begenning. Wonder what King Rex thought of it Saturday? They aren’t finished with it yet, as call said, so I believe they will cover all the basis. I would like to see the officials locker room that he also spoke of, just to see how nice those guys have it when they are working a game.
Merry Christmas Tyler, and thank you for working today, so we have something to read!

Maybe…include a pic of Rupp, Wah Wah, Cliff, and Frank, and Dan and Goose and all the banners years….plus maybe an orientation into the past greats and greatness of the program would help new guys get fired up a little more…

Maybe this is why they are playing so soft… being spolied like the championship team that they aren’t.

#24 they dont know who any of those people are.

the history of UK is celebrated all over the Craft center…the locker room is about the game and recruiting

UL fans need to start holding bake sales, car washers, have people at red lights collecting change, and constantly holding fundraisers to pay off the Yum Center debt instead of trolling KSR.

They need to have more pics of past UK people on the walls of the suite like Rex, Issel, Riley, Bowie, Walker, etc. I know these kids don’t know who the f these old players are, and that’s a problem.

If Joe Craft or whoever is willing to donate millions of dollars, they can name it whatever they want.

Rumour has it (Adele shout out): The Toto low flow 1.6 gpf Locker Room toilets have a custom refuse disposal motor in the head with a built-in mechanical hydraulic plunger.

I think we had one in the Brady house Mike designed. He was always into plungers.

This is kind of like sharing a pizza with someone and they complain about the toppings.

I am sure Cal realizes there were teams and coaches here before he arrived, since he pays respect and tribute to them all the time. If you tour Craft Center and the Wildcat Coal Lodge, you will see plenty of graphics, trophies, and banners that respect our past. The Game Day experience at Rupp is targeted at current and future players i.e. recruits.

Think back to when you were 17-years-old? Did you really care about learning about players that played during your grandfather’s time, or were your basketball heroes active NBA (or ABA) players? That comes with age and maturity, but isn’t appropriate for a recruiting visit.
