Talkin’ Peach Jam and Rupp Arena naming rights (Friday Show Thread)

29913742001_2538675066001_vs-51dddfd3e4b0d732cedff23e-1592194016001

It takes a pretty big story to divert attention away from the biggest recruiting event of the summer. Two days after the press conference addressing the future of Rupp Arena and the Lexington Center, Lexington mayor Jim Gray will call in to Kentucky Sports Radio at 10:30 a.m. to discuss selling Rupp Arena’s naming rights. If you heard Matt talk about it during yesterday’s show, you know he’s got some pretty strong opinions on the matter, which means it will be a very lively discussion.

All of this goes down while Matt, Drew Franklin, and Chris Tomlin are in Augusta for the Peach Jam, so when he’s not talking about Rupp, Matt will have plenty of updates on Kentucky’s top targets, including Malik Newman, Stanley Johnson, Cliff Alexander, and others.

Join in on the fun by calling (502) 571-1080.

The KSR tour is on a brief hiatus while Matt and Drew are in South Carolina for the Peach Jam, but starting next week, catch them at any of the following stops:

Solid line from Coach K. I’ve been behind his bench in the past during games. Dude cusses like a sailor; he’s far from the saint he’s portrayed as. But that is pretty funny.

A lot of you won’t want to hear this, but Jim Grey is great for Lexington. A construction man and a visionary. If you could get past some things, some of which that have yet to be worked out, what is being planned for downtown is amazing and I think it’s laughable at some of the push back from the fans. Why on earth would you against the improvement of downtown.

  81. swampthang
    10:51 am July 12, 2013 Permalink

As a Lexington resident, my opinion is that Mayor Gray’s tenure as Lexington Fayette Urban County mayor has only reflected as the Lexington downtown mayor, with no concern for the remainder of the city All projects have been focused on downtown only. I’m guessing that the majority of Fayette county residents don’t really care about what goes on downtown. If it weren’t for his vision of downtown, Rupp arena renovation would not be on the table.

Remember that the Mayor’s main job is to improve the city of Lexington. He needs to make money for the city. It’s easy for someone who doesn’t live in Lexington to hate on the “Lexington beuatification” projects, but for the city it is important. It would help improve the cities economy and keep people in the downtown, instead of leaving and going straight home. Just remember his goal is to improve Lexington as a whole. #72 you have no clue…

    82) There is so much dilapidated real estate downtown, WE NEED TO FOCUS our efforts downtown. Lexington can’t and should continue to grow outward. It’s time to start looking back towards the center of city. I don’t blame him at all at piggy backing on the Rupp renovation. It’s actually pretty genius if you ask me. Make downtown attractive and a destination and EVERYONE benefits not just in Lexington, but the State. Would be a huge economic stimulus for Lexington.

I am more confused and have less confidence after hearing the interview with the mayor. The primary concern for me is the financing aspect and why there have been no estimated project costs released to date. What exactly has the committee completed the last 12-18 months? Also, the parks and streams for the fan experience are Irrelevant during basketball season because it is a winter sport.

They’re going to bankrupt the city with this nonsense. Any “fan experience” improvement has been hijacked to fund a bunch of BS that 95% of the fans (or Fayette County residents) don’t care about. Streams, parks, playhouses, art district. Nonsense.

68, I know, how dare Matt look out for those less fortunate than him!

Didn’t hear all of it, but generally Matt touched on the points: Is the little, everyman UK fan being looked for in this process? Answer: Sort of, insofar as we’ll do what we need to do in order to make sure he still gives us his money on gameday. Are we going to sell the name of Rupp Arena to fund unnecessary projects/renovations like a city park? Answer: I’ll say it was the only option in the end, but yes, probably we will.

99 – Yeah, I enjoy the entertainment like the next guy but I hate that important issues like this get caught up in his agenda. It creates a false sense of instability in this project and the people behind it (like Jim Gray) that doesn’t exist in reality. The fact is, UK is involved in the process and the Mayor of the city has significant construction experience to go along with many others on the board that have fan interests in mind. It’s just sad that Matt will now continue to use his show to cast unnecessary doubt on the project for the his radio show purposes (and not for the good of the community). It’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

UK should distance themselves from this. The city obviously doesn’t rank UK’s interests high on the list. So UK should pull out, and watch it all crash down around Grey. No UK endorsement, no public support, no funding, no playhouses, streams, parks. The homeless will have to loiter in all the other parks in town they inhabit.

Can’t listen in today, but how silly is it that everyone is so upset about the naming of Rupp Arena by a corporate entity, and yet we already have the Joe Craft center and the Kentucky Coal lodge. Is Lexington tying other projects to this potential funding? Sure. Why wouldn’t they? That is politics 101. Look at any legislation passed by any government body in the last 20 years and you will see legilation rife with attachments of more unpopular legislation. If this deal with Rupp and Lexington falls through, and UK builds their own arena does everyone think it will still be named Rupp Arena? Don’t you think it will require outside funding from another entity which will probably require

When I try to pronounce it correctly though for out-of-towners, I use Loo-ey-ville. I don’t think they would know what I’m talking about if I used the other pronunciations.

#146 For fear of starting a nerd fight, going to disagree with you. He definitely shot Martin, but based on all evidence that has come out in the trial, he did it to save himself. Maybe you don’t follow him, but that’s not a crime. Martin also doubled back to confront him. If you are getting the life beat out of you, you do anything needed to save yourself.

#169 If you’ve been watching the case and following all information coming out, not just what was on tv before the trial, then the narrative you’ve described is wrong.

Simply because he was only 17, doesn’t mean he couldn’t beat up a 31 year old. And it was his job as neighborhood watchman to watch the neighborhood. It’s clear by all evidence that Martin was on top of Zimmerman beating the crap out of him. If you were in that situation and had a gun, you’d probably use it was well.

  172. I_DontKnow

167-Wasn’t Zimmerman’s purpose to protect the neighborhood ? Wasn’t he supposed to present himself as an authority…to intimidate anyone who might do some kinda crap in the neighborhood? People have confrontations all the time. Self control is necessary to keep it from escalating. We males who are full of pride have a hard time with that. No guy with balls wants to back down.

The Mayor of Lexington is responsible and has a duty to the Lexington/Fayette taxpayers as well as the taxpayers of the Commonwealth since it is assumed that TIF (sales tax rebates) will be used if approved by the general assembly. I think it would be a breach of his fiduciary duty not to seek a revenue stream for naming rights for Rupp Arena. I usually agree with Matt but I thought Matt came off as disrespectful in this interview. Also I think the other arenas Matt mentioned as not having corporate names were not owned/operated by a municipal government. Coal Severance Funds should remain in the coal counties and naming rights should be on the table.
