So the second day of Sweet 16 action gets under way this evening and we will be treated to the double-edge sword of Gus Johnson in one set of games and Billy Packer in the other. Tonight, the Ewing theory goodness of Texas takes on the Lopez twin perfection of Stanford. I must admit to being a big fan of the Lopez brothers, dating back to when they came and played in Louisville for the Derby Classic a couple of years back. Brook and Robin were blessed with a great game and a strong intellect, while being cursed with a pair of unfortunate names that only a Stanford professor could truly generate. The twosome make me laugh, with their varied hair styles and different basketball skills. Brook can put the ball in the basket and has terrific hands, while Robin is a great defender and one of the best energy guys you will see in college basketball. Put together, and they are the perfect big man duo you could imagine….and if they can share clothes if necessary to save on expenses. Everyone wins!
As for Texas, we thought they would miss Kevin Durant and they dont. They have a number of great athletes and scorers, most notably DJ Augustin. From a matchup perspective however, I think they will have a tough time with Stanford. The size of the Cardinal will find openings against the Texas defense and the big guys down low (if they stay out of foul trouble) can cut off the Longhorn penetration. On a neutral court, I take the Brothers Lopez and move forward. But this isnt a neutral court….the game is being played in Texas. So I like the Longhorns to win by 3-5 and move on to the next round…..leaving Brook and Robin to cry themselves to sleep over a copy of “Ulysses.”
