Survey says!

The fine people over at The Lexington Herald-Leader recently polled a group of sportswriters who claim to be knowledgable on the recruiting scene to see where they believe Kentucky’s three remaining targets — Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle, and Aaron Gordon — will end up when it’s all said and done.  Though some of these so-called experts know less than you, and it shows, they were all kind enough to blindly throw darts at each player’s list of potential suitors in this interesting feature by the Next Cats blog.

Below are the predictions from each of the five national analysts, as well as The Herald-Leader’s predictions.  You can read their reasoning behind the predictions here.

Jerry Meyer, 247 Sports
Wiggins: Florida State
Randle: Kentucky
Gordon: Arizona

Brian Snow,
Wiggins: Florida State
Randle: Texas
Gordon: Arizona

Jason Hickman,
Wiggins: Florida State
Randle: Kansas
Gordon: Washington

Jeff Borzello,
Wiggins: Florida State
Randle: Kansas
Gordon: Arizona

Adam Zagoria, ZagsBlog
Wiggins: Florida State
Randle: Kansas
Gordon: Washington

Ben Roberts, Herald-Leader
Wiggins: Kentucky
Randle: Kentucky
Gordon: Arizona

As you can see, four of the five national guys believe Coach Cal will strike out on the Wiggins-Randle-Gordon trio.  I’m sorry, but even unbiased me doesn’t see any way Cal misses on all three.  That ain’t happenin’.

Here’s how I believe it will play out…

Drew Franklin, Taco Bell, Nicholasville Road

Wiggins (Kenfloritucky State): A week ago, I had already given up all hope of watching Andrew Wiggins in Rupp Arena.  Gone were the dreams of being in the background of his UK mixtapes on YouTube.  The folks I’ve talked to believed Kentucky was ready to throw in the towel because there was no way in hell his parents would let him go anywhere other than Tallahassee.  But, if you believe the internet rumors, Wiggins now has his parents’ blessing to sign with Kentucky.  That, I’m not 100% sure of, but Calipari did open their eyes to the potential of Andrew playing at UK.  Getting Wiggins’ parents on campus for a face-to-face conversation was Calipari’s only hope of keeping him away from Florida State and he was able to do that last week, and it went well.  Now, I believe it has shifted to a level playing field between Kentucky and Florida State.  North Carolina and Kansas, thanks for playing.  This one is a coin flip between FSU and UK.

Randle (Kentucky): If you had a gun to my head and forced me to guess where Julius Randle is going to college, I would disarm you with a move I learned from watching the Bourne movies and then tell you I’d be shocked if he goes anywhere other than Kentucky.  The staff is confident they’ll get a commitment from Randle and have been for some time.  He wants to win a title; he named Andrew Harrison as the player he’d like to play with most in college; he was wowed by his official visit to Kentucky last fall; he loved Coach Cal’s honest pitch during the in-home visits; and he knows Lexington is where the best talent in America goes to get better. It’ll take a pretty big upset from one of the other schools to pull him away from UK, and even then I think Kansas is the only one with a prayer.

Gordon (Arizona): I won’t pretend to know what’s going on with Gordon out on the West Coast.  I’m guessing he ends up at Arizona because it’s the only non-UK school on his list with any potential to win big, and there is no way he heads east to Kentucky if the Cats get Julius Randle.  But if Randle somehow signs with Kansas, Texas, NC State or Florida, then I believe Kentucky is right at the top of Gordon’s list and Calipari will make a strong push to get him here.

Most of the talking heads don’t know as much as the average KSR reader. They are merely echoing conventional wisdom. If it was as open shut as they say about Wiggins and Randle, we would have known. These guys have no more idea where these players are headed than the man in the moon. Wait and see…Cal comes through with at least one..

Randle: Kentucky/Kansas – very close, but in Cal we trust.
    Gordon: Washington

There is absolutely NO reason to go to fsu. Ask any 4 or 5* kid that ended up at fsu, if they’d do it again – or go to UK instead.

I loved the comment about Randle going to ku and being the next robinson – yeah, cause UK hasn’t ever put a top notch 3 or 4 into the league. Ridiculous!

washington has been linked to more top kids than UK (almost) in the past several years, because of romar? What has romar ever done to get top tallent, much less keep his job?

If Wiggins doesn’t care about winning a title, he goes to FSU and is the BMOC and gets as many shots as he wants. If he wants to win a title, he goes to UK and earns hit PT. Honestly though, no one in the country could take his PT at any school.

Kansas is going to lose Withey, Johnson, McLemore, Young, and Releford and their class doesn’t touch ours. If Randle wants to win a title, he has to pick UK. But Kansas is very good at closing players and will return some young talent with a little bit of college experience.

We know it will be the biggest decision of your young life to decide on where to bring your talents to and can only hope that you choose us ( The University of Kentucky ). You see, we as UK fans cannot believe or want to believe that you would actually pick another school beside UK. We want you to pick us and become part of history in going 40&0 and bringing back National Championship #9. Why wouldn’t you want this for your yourself and your parents? Think about it and then ask yourself, WWMKGD, WWADD, WWTJD, WWDLD, WWDMD, WWMTD. Be the Best~Be a Cat!!!!!!!!

If we get Randle don’t get Gordon plain and simple, no way we get all three. Wiggins loves UK and is parents love Cal and UK now also. Common sense dictates that he will be a Cat next year. Randle will be committing in the next 2 weeks possibly this week. I have been saying that for 3 days now. Gordon and Wiggins will not be committing to either late this month or possibly signing day next month. McDonalds wants him to commit at their game and Jordan Brand want him to commit at theirs. I believe he will do it from school. I could see him though committing after his visits are finished that way his parents are their with him. I believe Randle commits to UK and Wiggins comes also with WCS or Noel returning.

Is it truly realistic that, with his already loaded class, Cal could or would land or even need or want both Wiggins and Randle? That’s 8 guys into one class. Not even Rick Pitino has that many scholarships, right? Unless Cal already knows that everybody is leaving or being forced out this year, how in the hell is landing 2 more scholarship players even possible?

Thanks for clarifying Drew. I just spoke about how ridiculous (@9 & @12) comments were. I just don’t understand how someone can questions Cal on developing players or try and dispute rankings made by some of the industries best. The guys from Rivals, Scout, and ESPN spend hours upon hours watching the top HS players in the country. While Archie and Alex may not be what YOU expected, they are both solid players who are still learning how to play at this level. They have been here for 7 months not 2 or 3 years. Give them time to develop, there is only so much a coach can do. It is up to the individual to take and use the instruction given.
Questioning the abilities of coach Cal is absolutely ridiculous to me. The guy has put 15 players in the league since arriving at KY. He is absolutely phenomenal at developing guys who have a high ceiling. Not only due they have high ceilings they also have a false sense of what it takes to play at this level upon arrival. Of course, there are players who we can make an acception for but there are very few who know what it takes to win night in night out at this level. I believe Archie is 18 while Alex is 19. These guys have showed flashes of brilliance throughout the season and will eventually find their role. It might not be this year and who knows, maybe not even next year. With that said, there are countless top ranked HS players that struggle as freshmen. Go take a look at the top 20 players from the past 3 years and I assume you will be surprised to see how inconsistent or even irrelevant some of them are.
If you can’t appreciate what Cal has done here for our university in the past 3 years I feel sorry for you. You should probably go cheer for another team if that is the case. Elite 8, Final 4, NCAA Title, in order. I’d say that is a pretty impressive accomplishment to achieve with a bunch of, as you would put it (overrated freshmen). Hopefully, Alex and Archie stick around to be a part of next years squad. Which I do beleve could be ranked pre-season #1, while also having a legitimate chance to make a run at another title. If you don’t like Cal or how he develops his players go cheer for Self, Izzo, or K. I am assuming you see these guys as the upper echelon of college hoops and who knows, maybe they could give you some guys who you think deserve their rankings. Again, I just find these ridiculous comments and can’t come to terms with them. You are the type of fan who give the rest of us Cats fans a bad name. I think if you had any sense at all you would realize what Cal has done here at Kenucky is special in every way, shape, and form. He has returned us to relevancy which under Tubby we began to slide away from, and completely lost under BCG. I am proud to call myself a Kentucky fan and always stand up for my team (even when they are struggling, I.e. this season) Hopefully you were only referring to the rankings and not seriously dissing Cal for his supposed inabilities to develop young talent. If you think Cal struggles to develop talent or that Archie and Alex were ranked to high, you might want to brush up on your college basketball knowledge. Nobody is credited more for getting young talent to play together, and play well than Cal. I will continue to stand up for Alex and Archie in hopes that they don’t get down on themselves due to the ridiculous comments made about them from our (supposed) fans who are supposed to Bleed Blue. I hope that they return next year so that they can be part of something special. Maybe I am getting ahead of myself with next years team, but I think we will be one of the best in the land and primed to make another title run.
Im rambling, so I am forcing myself to submit my comments. I am not attacking #9 & #12 but am just sick of reading these comments that have absolutely no substance to them. Please just think before you make comments as such. Take a look at how inconsistent other top ranked freshmen are throughout the landscape of college basketball year in and year out. Maybe then you will see that Archie and Alex were deserving of their rankings when they were in HS. Everyone is different when it comes to development. It is a drastic jump from HS to College and an even bigger jump from College to the NBA. With that said, let’s beat UGA and then give Florida a run for their money this weekend in hopes that we get a bid to the greatest tournament in all of sports. GO BIG BLUE!!!!

A lot of the experts didn’t have any of our commits coming here, and they just don’t believe anyone wants to go where there are other talented players, unless it’s a Duke or UNC or UCLA, etc. People just keep on underestimating Cal and the appeal of this program.

Really hoping we can get 2 of these guys. Randle announces this month, right? Here’s hoping he feels UK and Cal are the best fit for his basketball career and life.

We have only 8 scholarship players of those 8, Mays is gone, Hood is transferring, so that puts us at 6. Polson only gets a scholly if we have them left over so that means we have only 5 scholarships. Most likely Goodwin and one of either WCS/Noel leaves so that leaves 3 players. Even if Poythress returns and Hood doesn’t transfer, like I have heard all year, we still only have 5 scholarships used cause I just don’t see Nerlens and WCS leaving, so we still have room to add people. With that said I see the scholarship players next year being Wiggins, Randle, Twins, Young, Johnson, Lee, Willis, Wiltjer, Harrow, and Noel/WCS.

#42 – Appearances does not equal games played. Texas has appeared in 30 tournaments but went on to play “x” many games in said tournaments. Each tournament they could have played a minimum of 1 game or max of 5 games not including a play-in game. 30 appearances, 77 games: average 3 games in a tournament. Make sense?
