Sunday Afternoon: Who To Root For

pryor

For many, thanks to the rise of Fantasy Football, overall parity, and free agency, the NFL has ceased to be a sport where fans root for teams. People now root for players or coaches or whichever team has the hottest cheerleaders (honestly, the only reason to be a Tampa Bay fan these days).

As good Kentucky fans, we should be supporting our alums in the NFL. Here is a quick break down of former Wildcats in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. /Jaws

Keenan Burton – St Louis Rams – Wide Receiver: Keenan visited Commonwealth Stadium yesterday and was the most exciting part of Saturday’s game against EKU. He was in Lexington because the Rams are on a bye, so no rooting for Keenan this week. His team did get their first win last week and Burton led the Rams in receptions and has established himself as the team’s #2 WR.

Steve Johnson – Buffalo Bills – Wide Receiver: After a few DNP’s to start the season, Stevie got some playing time last week and caught a pass for 5 yards. The Bills have a bye week Sunday and I can only assume they will be drawing up plays for Johnson for the second half of the season. Unlike a different WR up there, we all know Stevie can catch and hold onto the football.

Jeremy Jarmon – Washington Redskins – Defensive End: The Redskins are coming off a bye week and facing the Atlanta Falcons today. It has been a struggle for Washington this year and Jarmon is good for a couple of tackles a game. (Sunday, 1:00, Fox)

Myron Pryor – New England Patriots – Defensive Tackle: Pryor started out the year with a DNP, but has seen increased playing time as the year has progressed. Man Mountain is a solid contributor and is impressing the Patriots staff. He should see significant playing time today against the Dolphins and their Wildcat offense. The Providence Journal penned a nice article on Pryor and his struggles with ADHD. If you were looking for any reason to root for a Boston team, Pryor would be it. (Sunday, 1:00, CBS)

Jacob Tamme – Indianapolis Colts – Tight End: Kind of tough to break through when the guy ahead of you is one of the best Tight Ends to ever play the game and Peyton Manning’s favorite target. Tamme is active this week even though he has a tweaked hammy. Jacob has no receptions this year and his contribution is typically on special teams. The Colts do take on the Texans today in a game where Houston is looking to make a statement. (Sunday, 1:00, CBS)

Garry Williams – Carolina Panthers – Offensive Tackle: Tough to find information on O-line guys. The Panthers have him listed as their #2 Left Tackle. He also makes a damn fine red M&M. (Sunday, 4:05, Fox)

Wesley Woodyard – Denver Broncos – Linebacker: Probably the most successful of the recent UK alums in the NFL. Woodyard was elected team captain and serves as the Special Teams captain for the 2009 season. He has been a pivotal player in a year that is shaping up to be a special one for Denver. A big Monday night game is coming against the Steelers and Woodyard is reason enough to root for the Broncos. As if you needed any more reasons to root against Pittsburgh. (Monday, 8:30, ESPN)
