Sunday Morning Notes

rdd

Its very late and I have been with the ponies and in random places around Eastern Kentucky’s campus tonight so I am a bit tired. Quickly….

Tom Izzo showed once again tonight why he is one of the three best coaches in college basketball. He beat Louisville and UCONN, two teams that from a talent perspective, he has no business being on the court with. Yes he will get waxed on Monday, but you have to give him credit for what he has done so far…..and a big shout out to Draymond Green, a kid once bound for UK.

Dominique Ferguson’s decision to likely open up his recruiting process is tough for many, but was a likely result. If Vinny Zollo decommits, then Calipari will basically have cleaned the deck of every UK commitment of the Gillispie post-2009 era. While Ferguson is immensely talented, so are a lot of players and the last thing I am worried about going forward is Calipari bringing in talent.

— All the rumors online today about Michael Porter quitting the team this week are untrue. He has yet to announce or make a decision on his plans for next season and it will likely be a while before we hear anything either way.

— I know some are excited about Xavier Henry’s father’s statements about him still being open….I spoke to someone on Friday who is very familiar with the Calipari recruiting situation for this year and he told me, “Cousins will be here if they want to bring him, Wall is likely and Henry probably wont be here.” I think that is as good a read as anyone has at this point and is generally the vibe I get from all involved.

Recruiting is different under this regime and it will take some time to get used to it. There will be a lot of different fish and a lot of different directions. But unlike the last regime, they will be fighting for top prospects with the top schools and not simply getting commitments from players locked up quickly. It will make the recruiting game much more broad, so get ready as this summer will be interesting.

A lot coming on Sunday, including the Top 10 Bizarre Moments from behind the scenes in UK basketball this past season…..of the funny, not troubling variety. See ya soon……..
