Sunday Morning Links and The Morning After

-Ouch. If somehow you missed the game last night or would like to relive the because you are into pain then check out these recaps. The Air Raid Bombed in the season opener. The game was tough to watch I imagine it’s even worse to read about.

“I’m just lucky to have a good team,” he said. “They went out and executed well.” Maybe Bobby Petrino has turned over a new leaf because he sure acted humble following last night’s victory. The Courier-Journal said he had a right to gloat after being passed over in the coaching search but I’m glad that he remained quiet.

Everything you wanted to say about the Air Raid 2.0 but were to afraid to speak. The offense was a bit more grounded than what everyone expected coming into the game and now we have a QB controversy. Fun Times.

-As we reported last night DeAndre Liggins was arrested on domestic abuse with a deadly weapon charges which just sounds awful.

-(TIpton) The Mayor Sees the Rupp Renovation as a way to preserve history. I’m not sure how gutting a building and leaving only the brown warehouse casing is preserving history but I guess we will have to wait for the finished product to truly know.

ZaDarius Smith was promoted as the second coming of Art Still. He had one sack and celebrated too much after that. Now if he sacks AJ McCarron he should celebrate. Speaks to his maturity.

    Drew, we need you!

I was at the game till the last play. The offense ran much smoother with Max under center. The pace sped up 3 fold (except for the one delay of game penalty). He only played one quarter, but he threw as many passes and threw for 50 more yards. He ran the offense the way I was expecting to see the Air Raid run. Had the offense been run that way the entire game, it would have gone a long way to masking the weaknesses with the defense.

Timmons will be a BIG play maker….if the quarterback can get him the ball. Western kept “feeding their studs”. We relied on Whitlow to dance his way down the field for offense. We threw several passes in the flats that should have been intercepted for touchdowns. It could have been much worse.

I think Smith should be starter, Towells as #2, and Whitlow as a receiver. He can play, and should be on the field, but we stand a much better chance when more of our play makers have a chance to make plays.

Where are all KSR trash talking so called bloggers today? If he didn’t have to play games, Poops would be a perfect coach.

BBN is full of fools. How can we so easily buy into this unproven joke of a coach. He’s a coach that preaches commitment and hard work, yet can’t refuse that second helping of pizza or chocolate cake. Are football program is a joke.

It seems to me that we have a good recruiting pitch to the best JUCO players on defense. JUCOs are concerned with immediate playing time and exposure. I feel like we could make that pitch (PT and SEC).

Also, I disagree with number 1. Z is the only one that showed some spark in him. You call it immaturity, but if the whole team played fired up like that we might not have looked so bad. Watch Florida play. Those big guys are celebrating and fired up after every tackle

Western KY is a good team… They have some really good players and they have a really good football coach. They may not lose more than 1 or 2 games all year. We learned a lot about our team and it is disappointing, however I do not think that Stoops is a bad coach. This was his first game as a head coach and he will get better and better. Our offense obviously ran better with Max and I feel that he will be the first change they’re on the offensive side of the ball. Watch for Timmons to get more time and more touches… He made a big play (fumbled) but with more experience I see him being a big playmaker. With Max as QB, you’ll have more WR’s get the ball, which will open the run for is. There were some good things and some very bad things that we will make adjustments for. As for the defense, oh boy we have a lot of work to do… Wimpy tackling, no pressure on the QB, getting beat to the outside, guys being left wide open down field… We’ll bounce back and play better next week.

#2 – couldn’t agree more and am confident the coaches see the same thing. Next week we’ll see Smith under center and Whitlow somewhere on the field. Throw in the occasional “half-back” pass, or similar, along with Smith’s increased efficiency and greater experience and we just may have an Air Raid afterall.

If you will recall, Whitlow “froze” when he hit the field last year as well. Sounds like he can’t handle the QB’s in game responsibilities. The other positions can, for the most part, just go play; the QB has to be the on field coach. Smith seems to handle this very well; Whitlow – not so much. You can’t mimic the pressures of these responsibilities in practice. In practice, if you miss a play, the coach blows the whistle and you do it again. Do so in a game, the other team scores 6.

Nothing against Whitlow, he just doesn’t seem cut out to be a QB. Many aren’t. I believe I’ve heard Chris Carter talk about how the last thing he’d want to do is play QB; he just wanted to get on the field and do his thing.

It’s a tough way to learn hard lessons but, many times, the best way to learn is to fail.

Now, if they run Whitlow out there to start next week; I’ll start questioning the Stoops hire.

    #13 – agreed

I don’t know what defensive scheme they’ll try to run out there next week but, I can assure you, their overall strategy is to hope the offense can outscore their opponents.

Whitlow is a hell of an athlete but a horrible quarterback. Been saying since day one of spring practice he should be a receiver. He is 6’2 and would be a big target and if we get him in space we get lots of YAC. SMITH is the guy who can get it to him and like #17 said he would be great for an occasional flea flicker. What disturbs me is why haven’t the coaches seen this. Maybe he has iron hands when catching the ball or is afraid of being hit when reaching for the ball. All in all he could’t even start at quarterback in high school, what makes anyone think he can in the SEC.

I would like to see KSR tell us how great Whitlow is now. All night long the announcers were talking about how he did not audible and Western knew it. I have not understood why these writers kept pushing Whitlow all year. Smith would have had Western’s passing numbers had Petrino been on our sideline!

My favorite thing about all of these Card fans on here is that they forget the losses that Strong took in his first 2 seasons. Do you guys remember losing to FIU? How about Marshal? Both of those losses were in Strong’s 2nd season. FIU lost to LA-Lafyette, Duke and WESTERN KENTUCKY among others. Marshal (6-6) was not a good team either.

Very disappointed with the defense, saw many of the things like last year couldn’t tackle anyone, keep anyone in check, faked out on runs, large holes opened up, need to see improvement in this area,to get rid of this ” not really feeling good about ” feeling counting on you Stoops.

#30 – good point I always thought Smith was a pretty good QB when healthy – he was SEC Player of the Week after all. With the build up of Whitlow here on KSR I was expecting a truely special player. Instead, we saw the exact same guy who played last year…

Petrino is an offensive genius. Everyone knew he would put together a game plan to exploit the inept linebackers and secondary. Mitch IMO should have inked Petrino while he had the chance. Stoops is a good guy, but if that offensive scheme is any indication of his coaching ability, he’s the wrong fit for UK. Obvious Smith is the better QB but Withrow needs to be on the field also…. seems to be a great athlete, just not a QB. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Petrino to So Cal in a few years. Maybe then UK will be able to beat Western again. Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to add Morehead to the schedule. They may actually beat an in-state school. BTW, Petrino has never lost a first game of the season and has never lost to UK.
