Sunday Look-Ahead: The Next Five Opponents

With last night’s loss the Cats face some good news as well as some bad news. The good news is that the hardest two game stretch of the season is over and the Cats didn’t look “god-awful”. The bad news is injuries are beginning to pile up just as the team seems to be putting something together. Looking at the next five games offers a bit of optimism after the first half last night. Perhaps Kentucky can put together a complete game and string together some victories. Here’s how the next five opponents shake out:

#20 Mississippi State

The Bulldogs have climbed up the top 25 as they sit at 4-0. Last week they had a bye so they are going to be well rested as they roll into Lexington. But perhaps our perennial rival from the West is just a tad bit overrated. Their only significant win is over Auburn who has shown to be significantly down this year. Besides that they steamrolled some cupcakes and could be looking ahead to next week’s game against the more formidable Tennessee. UK could have a real chance if they can put together two halves next Saturday at noon.

Coming into the season this game looked like a surefire loss. Now how can you not expect the Cats to win? The razorbacks have the look of a team that has completely quit. Yesterday they got bulldozed by Texas A&M 58-10 to fall to 1-4. While this may be a tough game on the road the Cats should be able to pull out a win against a broken team. Either way this game should be known as the horri-bowl as the loser will most likely be the worst team in the SEC.

#5 Georgia

The biggest question facing this game isn’t the outcome but rather what will be the attendance for this game. Win the aforementioned two and the Cats are 3-4. About where we assumed before the season started. Lose one or both and this could be one of the worst crowds in school history. Which would be sad considering we usually give Georgia a game. Last year Kentucky took UGA to the fourth quarter before losing 19-10. We were a much worse team last year than this year. This game is easily the most unwinnable of the bunch.

If this game were at home I’d have even higher hopes for the next five games. However since it is on the road it’s hard to see UK pulling it out. Still the Tigers have gotten beat by 21 in both of their SEC games so far (Georgia and South Carolina) and face Alabama the week before Kentucky comes to town. If both sides of the ball are in sync for Kentucky this would could be a game.

Kentucky’s final SEC home game is against Vandy and offers a chance for the Cats to get revenge for last season’s beatdown. Its hard to gauge this Vandy squad. They played South Carolina close but Shaw was hurt for most of the game. Then they lost 23-13 to Northwestern which has turned out to be not such a bad loss as it originally seemed. They blewout Presbyterian and then got destroyed by Georgia. Kentucky should be able to notch another win if things go their way. Then again they could lay an egg like against Western and get beat.

Through UK’s first five games the opponents had a record of 24-1 with the only loss coming to Alabama. These next five games open up a bit as the five teams have a combined record of 14-9. Nine of those wins come from Miss. St and Georgia.

What do you think UK can do over these next five games. 4-1? 3-2?

I guess you have not been watching our last 4 games. 0-4. 1-3. MSU will beat us 2-3 touchdowns

Kinda depends who is the QB, prolly 1-4 id Smith is out for awhile. With Smith or if Towles comes
in as hero then possibly 4-1

5-0 The only tough one will be the game against Georgia, otherwise we should roll through the remaining slate. That will get us to 6 wins and a matchup against SMU in the bowl (Best swag bags outside of BCS bowl games). Look for Newton to start at TE and become a surprise draft pick after he takes a week or so to get the position figured out.

“Now how can you not expect the Cats to win?” Apparently you haven’t watched this team play this year. How could you expect them to win, no matter the opponent? 0-5.

Yeah we lost 3 in a row but last night gave me some optimism. Whitlow wasn’t prepared to play and we looked pretty good

One decent half, plus a badly played one by S Carolina, and all of the sudden people are talking sunshine. The ONLY thing that last night showed was that we have some talent on this team, and to be consistently unprepared and not motivated is a huge black mark on this coaching staff.

So if we go 0-4, and lose to Arkansas in that run, can we finally fire Joker?

6 Indeed they have. If the game was at Commonwealth, I’d actually considering giving the W to the Cats. Unfortunately, I’m thinking it’s an L on the road.

As much as i would like to be a glass half full person. The game last nite. First half result was S.Carolina being full of themselves.Second half they played football, end result not good. Another thing you can’t look at the next games and say we are gonna win based on the name of some of those teams. You need to look at their talent level compared to ours. Missip St. is very physical and better than us. The big thing you have to know about a back up Qb. S.C did not have previous game film so S.Car was caught off guard and adjusted quickly. Dan Mullin now knows what Whitlow can do a bit now,he will be schemed.

“not god awful” have you see any of our games this year? if this isn’t text book god awful i don’t know what is. we caught usc completly off guard last night with a running qb when smith went down but as soon as they figured that out we couldn’t move the ball. if we win more than 1 game the rest of the year i’ll be surprised.

2-3 is the best we can hope for but 0-5 is not out of the realm of possibility. I’m guessing we go 1-4 with a victory against Arkansas.

    Anywhere from 0-5 to 2-3.

I’d also believe 0-5 is much more possible than 2-3.

Everyone is thinking Arkansas is God awful. They still have the same players that had enough talent to be pre season national contenders. They will look that way against us and we will go 0-5.

Much easier to say “Louavuhl” (loser school, just not on the grid’arn’ this y’ee’r).

0-5. They will not win at Arkansas. Vandy will beat them pretty handily, I think. They will play MSU pretty tough, but will fall in the end.

0-5 we would be lucky to eat any of them even as bad ad ark is playing. I’m saying it now.. 2-10 will be the final record for this team and hopefully joker will land a decent coordinator job or possibly another shot at an FCS school. Don’t let that 17-7 start yesterday fool you into thinking this team is capable of beating an SEC team. It would be a toss up at this point playingosr high schools.

Andrew I just want to thank you for still being a FAN on a FAN site! At the end of the year I will look at what has happened and decide about Joker! Right now I’m cheering for the kids on the field. I’m saying 3-2 with losses to Mizzou and Georgia. I wish fans would act like fans and not athletic directors. I wish people who go to Commonwealth just to “boo” would stay home! If you’re a fan come out and support your team, if not stay at home!

This season is so sad, when you consider this may be the easiest SEC slate we see in decades. We don’t even play the top two teams in the SEC. On top of that, we catch Arkansas during their worst year ever. How do we not make a bowl????

@5 “looked pretty good”….wow…we have different views on the meaning of the phrase “looked pretty good”. USC scored 31 unanswered points in the second half and you think we “looked pretty good”. In the first half, USC played poorly is the only way we had the lead. Spurrier cracked some skulls at halftime and we see how things went in the second half. So please, for the love of God, DO NOT SAY WE LOOKED PRETTY GOOD.
