I knew things were going too well.
After a week of great practices, Mark Stoops just brought everyone back to reality today when he told them how this morning’s practice went. Spoiler alert: it was terrible.
“Little bit of a disappointment today. Very poor day, to be honest with you. Very frustrated. Had to start certain segments over again. Just very weak mentally, physically. Just very average day. So very disappointed.,” Stoops told reporters, citing the team’s lack of focus and attention to detail for their “poor all around” performance. “We wasted the day. We wasted the morning.”
Stoops said his guys lacked toughness, something they’re going to have to find before August 31st or things will get really ugly: “We’re not tough enough. …I believe we have good kids here, and they mean well, but we have to have some toughness to us, some fight about us, or we’re going to have a long year.”
Ouch. That last quote is giving me some ugly flashbacks to last season.
One bright spot? Nate Willis, who arrive on campus yesterday and hasn’t even unpacked. It was the JUCO cornerback’s first practice as a Cat, and both Stoops and DJ Eliot said they saw good things from him. He tried to downplay the high expectations everyone has for him, telling reporter he’s “not a savior,” and is just there to do his part.
Za’Darius Smith and Cody Quinn also did not practice again today.
The good news is they’ve got another practice this afternoon and a scrimmage tomorrow to get back on track.
