Stoops said UK may add a couple more to the 2013 class

The signee list for Stoops’ first class at Kentucky is already impressive, and it’s still under construction, according to Stoops.  He said in his Signing Day press conference this afternoon that he might added a couple more players to the class before moving on.

Of course, one of those potential additions is Tevin Lawson, who will visit Lexington this weekend.  James Hearns is also holding off a few days before signing with a school.

We’ll have more from the presser in a bit.

#15 Exciting football on both sides will help recruiting. Any improvement on the record will be another feather in the cap. Our schedule is brutal, I expect 4-8 or 5-7 next season. If he gets this team to a bowl, he should be named SEC coach of the year.

Most of the members of this class will not play next year, but will be hard to keep off of the field! I bet half will be rotation players. Half of those will start, at least some. Our talent level isn’t bad, our coaching level was. That’s where the upgrade is off the charts! 7 or 8 wins are probable. By the 3rd game, we’ll be “getting it”. At that point, the defense and offenses will be asserting themselves. There are probably 8 players in this class who should have been 4-star. They’ll be tough, then they’ll be good. Players will reflect their coach(‘s). They’ll take on their identities. You won’t want to play us in the bowl game!

Yet UK still #14 SEC on scout and only ahead of mizzou in the SEC on rivals (or vice versa). Improved recruiting, but somewhat depressing to still look up at 12 or 13 SEC schools ahead of us.

18.) yes good point. 28.) How bad would it be if Joker and his staff was still here? Atleast with these coaches they can make 3star/4star players better with good play calling and putting them in the right positions…. i.e. Knowing how to coach!! LOL

I’m as big a UK homer as anyone and I’m pleased with our recruiting after only 2-3 months with Stoops, but I would hardly say “7-8 wins is probable” with a new coach and a new system. I’d love to be wrong, but I’ll be tickled pink if we have 7-8 wins in even two years.

  34. Jason

    @28

As it’s been said, yes, it sucks that we’re still bottom of the SEC in recruiting, but we have made up a considerable gap in recruiting. Where we used to be 50-70th, we finished near a top-25, and will probably finish IN the top-25 if we can add Lawson and/or Hearns (depending on his eligibility). You can continue to make up that gap with coaching, which we hopefully can do. Will we compete directly with Bama with this type of recruiting? No. Will we be insanely improved? Should be. 8-9 win seasons are very much in reach with this type of recruiting consistently.

#28. Agree. SEC is just a brutal, brutal football conference. Have a top 25 class and still be 14th in your conference is mind-boggling. Will just make the success that much sweeter!!!! GO KATS!!!!

  36. Yitbos
    4:21 pm February 6, 2013 Permalink

Sure this class is a bit low in the SEC rankings, but it’s a top 30 class nationally! We beat some teams with much bigger and better traditions than UK. Give this staff a few years to get some on field success and we’ll see (hopefully) middle of the pack SEC classes. I don’t ever see us on the level of Alabama or Florida…at least not in my lifetime.

  37. Jason
    4:21 pm February 6, 2013 Permalink

Oh and good news regarding Tevin Lawson, LSU has 27 LOI’s and only 28 spots. They’re holding out, likely, for Priest Wilson instead, from what I’ve read. It doesn’t look good for Lawson out in LSU. We’re sitting strongly for him.

  38. STEVE!
    4:22 pm February 6, 2013 Permalink

#28, the SEC is just brutal; however, with a couple more recruiting classes like this we should be able to compete with most of the teams. It’s not like the other 13 had Top 25 classes and we are sitting in the 60’s. There isn’t a big difference in the ratings of the bottom 5-6 SEC teams. With this type of recruiting, at least we should get back to going 4-0 in the non-conference schedule.

Ugh I’m so sick of whiny fans. It’s simple.

Yes, we are still last in the SEC. But if we just signed THE BEST CLASS WE’VE EVER HAD, right after the worst year we’ve had in a long time, any rational person would agree that’s quite an accomplishment. If Stoops has a decent year with us, these recruiting classes will just get better. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will UK’s football prominence.

    And also…

Troll- someone who posts a comment simply to get a rise out of people
Not a troll- someone with whom you disagree
Not necessarily a troll- someone who is stupid

Go ahead and paste that into Word somewhere, and next time you want to call someone a name on the internet, use it as a reference.

Its not the absolute ranking that matters, but where we are in relation to the rest of the conference. This class is MUCH closer to the average SEC school – and if we can just be average (4 or 5 sec wins) in the next two years, it will be a HUGE improvement over both Joker AND Brooks.

So far – Stoops and his team have vastly overachieved. show ’em some support!

I wouldn’t say 28 was whining, he’s just expressing what he might think is a potential problem, to where most of us are saying, DAMN I love being the underdog. For being on the job a little longer than two months and get the kids he did is nothing less than a miracle in my mind.

If we get Hearns and Lawson, this class will be our best class ever by far! Hell of a start for Stoops! Our Defense is going to be much improved next year and we are going to put some points on the board with Coach Brown’s offense. These coaches got the fan base and the existing players to believe, that’s the first step in developing them into a winning team! #STOOPSTROOPS!!!

Guys we went from having the #60 ranked class on Rivals.com in 2012 to currently having the #28 class for 2013. That is Stoops & Co. Getting the job done. Fantastic work by the coaching staff. I understand that it is frustrating for our fan base to be ranked 14th in the SEC but unfortunately all of the teams in our conference have benefitted from being in the SEC and improved significantly in recruiting. If you look at the Rivals.com team recruiting rankings for 2012, Ole Miss finished #40 (UK was #60), so Stoops getting us to #28 with his first recruiting class is not bad at all. He is positioned well to pull in a monster class next year IF he can win 6-7 games this season and get to a bowl game. Big IFs I know, but Stoops must show that he can win like Hugh Freeze did his first season (7-6 overall, 3-5 in the SEC) to have a second year class like Ole Miss.

    49. Well said. If you are not excited about what the new staff has done in 2 months then you aren’t really paying attention. I expect a handful of players to leave after the spring too. I can tell you this, unlike with Joker, if players don’t buy into what Stoops exp3cts of players then they will be told to hit the road. This guy cannot stand to fail.
