Well, Thursday night in Columbia the Kentucky football team will face a coach that has never lost to the blue and white. Ol’ Steve, who’s teams are “just throwing the football around and having fun” has also never lost a battle with the media when it comes to poking fun at others.
Enjoy the brilliant quotes from Steve below………
-1991 Steve Spurrier, Florida football coach, telling Gator fans that a fire at Auburn’s football dorm had destroyed 20 books: “But the real tragedy was that 15 hadn’t been colored yet.”
-‘’You know what FSU stands for, don’t you? Free Shoes University.’’ – Florida coach Steve Spurrier to the Polk County Gator Club, 1994
-Questioned the abilities of Head Coach Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee “You can’t spell Citrus without UT” and former Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning “I know why Peyton came back for his senior year: he wanted to be a three-time Citrus Bowl MVP”
-Responded to a question of; Coach, how did we beat Tennessee this year? At a South Carolina alumni meeting with; “The same way Vanderbilt did.”
-When talking about recruiting at South Carolina, Spurrier mentioned that he signed a player from the state of Alabama, offering a comparison to his recruiting when at Florida, said; “In 12 years at Florida, I don’t think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama”; But then he immediately added the punch: “Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours.” (in reference to the University of Alabama recruiting violations in the early 2000s)
-Even freshman Rex Grossman got into the act for Florida, throwing
a 43-yard touchdown pass with five seconds remaining and the
outcome long since decided.
-“I called that last play,” Spurrier said. “We had the ball like
eight plays in the fourth quarter and they were blitzing every
down, so we decided to try to score a touchdown in the fourth
quarter with our backup quarterback. Kentucky was trying to run
up their stats, so we tried to run up ours because ours were
Also, just a FYI to those who may not know, Steve Spurrier once coached quarterbacks at Georgia Tech. That is until the legend we all love Bill Curry fired him from his position. Great move, Bill.
