State attorney general upholds UK’s decision to withhold Nerlens’ records

Don’t geek.
The state attorney general’s office has denied The Kentucky Kernel’s request to snoop through Nerlens Noel’s academic records. The student newspaper filed an open records request back in August, but the university refused to give it up, citing a section of the Kentucky Open Records Act. The Kernel appealed UK’s denial and, today, the state attorney general upheld the decision to withhold the records. The state attorney general’s office said it was difficult to rule on the merits of the university’s denial of the request because of its own lack of access to the records.
“Since we were unable to review the relevant documents … we rely on the University’s interpretation and application of the federal law, and its professed appreciation for the value of transparency, to ensure that public records are not improperly withheld in the name of student privacy,” the ruling states.

What the heck is the Kernel doing trying to cause trouble for Nerlens?? I say we revolt against the student newspaper and whatever Pete Thamel wannabes that are running it!!!
Don’t forget to follow me @harveytgene. Plenty of Kats updates!
Looks like the Kernel is pulling a Jerry Tipton.
There is a reason this info is protected. Do we really think our ‘student athlete’ is a scholar that could actually skip a year of high school? Let’s not fool ourselves.
Buying a huge UK fan a present for Christmas. Which is better for recruiting info Rivals or Scout? Thanks.
The kernel is completely pathetic.
Down with the Kernel.
What do you know about it 6?
I only wish I had gradiated the 8th grade.
Doesn’t the kernel have anything better to do… like advertise for roomates and keep students heads dry when it rains?
9…me too. Any updates on the UT job? I heard the cincy coach hire is just hearsay.
I like Rivals better.
It’s a more professional layout, better, historical data, more videos of recruits who aren’t as popular as underclassmen (10th grade, 11th grade).
The rankings are better IMO as well.
In exchange for A’s and B’s, the young man was required to shave on his back fro the letters U and K as advertising.
A’s and B’s from the black board to the bill board to the back board…to the hoop.
A star got to jump through hoops before he can slam dunk through hoops.
I didn’t realize Tipton had a kid at UK.
#5 If all they’ll follow is Kentucky recruiting go to truebluekentucky.com I’ve been a member for 3 years now and by far the best for Kentucky info. Between Rivals and Scouts I like Rivals. SCouts sorta sucks and I’d take ESPNinsider before them.
the central question: why is the kernal interested in violating the privacy of a student athlete?
do they really think, after the NCAA, UK, and the Student’s HS reviewed NN’s records, that they have some super sleuth which will find a smoking gun? WTF?
The Kernel will file suit in Circuit Court.
Since Tommy Turtleneck turned down Matt’s debate, someone needs to photoshop Tommy with a Matt Jones Doesn’t Exist shirt on.
I can’t believe Ol’ Jack Conway let the public see that horribly written opinion. He needs to hire some new attorneys.
C’mon man! *(in a Keyshawn Johnson or Chris Johnson voice)
Everyone involved in this horrible effort to gain access to student records and write any article on Nerlens Noel’s should crawl back in the hole you came from and wake it up. We are talking about a student athlete and we are happy that he is at the University of Kentucky, getting an education and representing our State School.
We should support him at all cost, just like the administration supports our other students. However, you idiots want to attack one of your own. Attack a fellow student. I hope those involved in the attempt of this would be article never procreate and have a horrible difficult life ahead of them.
Now we know why Jeff Goodman wrote a piece about the SEC being horrible this year… Because Nerlens is going to be declared ineligible.
18 – uhhh hauahaha, that would be soooo funny. Do you not use photoshop like the rest of the world?
18 – Here’s the debate… Matt: Well UK didn’t say that, You did about U of L. Tom: Well, let’s talk about UK and UofL, which one is the best football job?
End Of Debate!
Revolt! Riot! Go to Twitter! Blockade! Ban! Refuse to Use!
Not quite the end 22! How can you substantiate UL being a top 10 job. You can’t. No one can. Has nothing to do with UK.
Still think that is one of the ugliest hats I’ve seen in a long time.
24 – why not debate something that includes UK as well… wouldn’t it finally be relevant to this blog then?
My goodness.
Weak Sauce on you Wings today.
Did they or were they so stupid to believe an alum of UK would rule in there favor? It is a Federal question, not one to be tried at the “state” level.
27 they may be stupid but they probably know the proper uses of there and their.
26 How about bc Jurich said he would debate UL being a top 10 job til he dropped dead. So he would be dead at the end of that discussion, and therefore not able to debate anything else. Your wings must be naked.
Did they or were they so stupid to believe an alum of UK would rule in there favor? It is a Federal question, not one to be tried at the “state” level.
Beyond the obvious grammar errors; no, it’s NOT a “Federal” question. The Commonwealth has an Open Meetings/Open Records Statute , with exemptions. So this is, quite rightly, a “state” issue as well.
29 – this blog and Math Jonas are not God. He did not say he would waste his time with you and him. Sorry goober.
He will debate that with people he cares to talk to and impress I’m sure and list his rationale. It’s his opinion.
He didn’t necessarily say he was right, but he definitely said he “thinks” he is right.
A little school for you on a Friday.
Can you put U of L and UK in the appropriate places on this blogs list of teams. Haha you all try to hard, but never go far enough to make it MORE F’N RELEVANT!
Clay Travis molests collies.
Why does UK have to constantly deal with two enemy newspapers in its own town? Why don’t both of them investigate corruption in the government?
I somehow ran across this bullcrap article on the Kernel when they applied for the info (literally the only Kernel article I’ve ever read) Their own readers were BLASTING them in the comments section. It was clear they were beginning to dig their own grave.
WTF! Are the hacks on the school newspaper trying to pad their resumes so they can get hired by the Lex Herald, after they graduate? If I was a young pup with no money in my pocket,I would storm down there and smack the taste out of their collective mouths. Alas, the fear of being sued has made me a mild mannered fan with angry typing fingers on a fan site.
The irony of this whole thing is that one would think that the University paper wouldn’t pull lame requests like that. I just don’t get it.
The editors website says she is from LaGrange, a suburb of Louisville. Hmmmmm
After doing some research, I discovered the Kernal was banned last year for not following policy when they talked to some walk-ons. The paper was thinking about a suit then for violation of freedom of speech. The front page of the editors website tells you all you need to know. She is definitely trying to make a name for herself as she say she really likes to dig for information.
A private investigator needs to find out if she is the bastard child of jerry from the lex herald. If so, that would explain a lot.
Maybe they want to hide it because he is a genius and just wants to stay humble.
#25–I think it’s a pith helmet. You’re right..that thing is….possibly breathing up there.
The Kernel is often too outspoken. At times it can be informative and entertaining, but they love to stir the pot. I also hate how they really let Joker Phillips have it (had an articel titled, “Joke’s Over!” when he was fired), not very classy on their parts. And then they were so left wing, Obama-lovers which would be ok, if they weren’t trying to make him look cool for all the impressionable college kids who can’t think for themselves. I say the school cleans house on everyone who writes for the Kernel, and start fresh with people who aren’t such classless bores.
Since I was in school years ago to now, The Kernal is filled with a bunch of nerds looking to make a name for themselves. They do t care about the sports programs or even UK, just looking for any kind of notoriety so they can get a job writing at a newspaper that will be out of business in 5 years anyways. Screw the Kernal and Screw UK for tearing down the KLAIR grill!
