— Big news today on the football recruiting front as Mark Stoops added another member to the 2013 class. Melvin Lewis, a JUCO defensive tackle from California, signed with Kentucky today after only a week’s worth of conversations with the staff. Lewis, who was also considering Miami, Washington and Hawaii, isn’t expected to make an immediate contribution next season and he has said he is okay with redshirting so he can make a bigger impact on Kentucky’s line for two full seasons. He’s a huge body (6’4”, 320 lbs.) on the inside and has a lot of potential to be a solid contributor in the SEC, especially if he sits this year to learn and develop under Stoops’ staff.
It looks like he signed the LOI in his kitchen…
— In basketball recruiting news, Andrew Wiggins is still on campus and today is the most important day of his recruitment for John Calipari. Sure, Wiggins saw last night’s game as part of his official visit, but that was his third trip to Rupp Arena — he attended Big Blue Madness and the North Carolina game last season — so he already had a pretty good idea of how things are done around here. Today is the real visit, when Cal sits down with Wiggins’ parents and works his magic. If Wiggins is going to pick Kentucky over FSU, the current favorite, it’ll take a perfect pitch from Cal in today’s conversations. Mama and Daddy are the only two barriers that stand in the way of landing the best high school prospect in the last ten years.
— Ticket distribution for Kentucky football’s Blue/White game began today and seats are going quickly, maybe even faster than expected. Over 16,000 tickets were claimed by noon today and things don’t seem to be slowing down. If you plan on going, you better lock up your tickets at Ticketmaster.com (use the promo code “LOYALTY”) or be prepared to sit a little higher up than you’d like. It’s pretty unbelievable how Mark Stoops and everyone involved with the program have generated so much excitement in three short months. To put things into perspective, 4,500 fans showed up for last year’s game when anyone could walk right in to Commonwealth Stadium and pick a seat without a ticket.
— We’ve all enjoyed fun poking fun at ADIDAS’s new basketball jerseys today, but Kansas fans aren’t laughing at their team’s proposed threads for the tournament. In fact, Kansas fans are so outraged, they’re taking it straight to the White House. The official “Stop Kansas basketball from wearing the new uniforms proposed by adidas” online petition reads, “Adidas has designed uniforms for KU basketball that are stylistically heinous and tarnish a venerated institution. Stand up for our university, for coherent color schemes, and for the spirit of Wilt Chamberlain.”
I’m not a Kansas fan, obviously, but Jayhawk Nation has my full support. No one should have to watch their beloved basketball team play ball in those shorts. Except you, Louisville. Wear those forever. They look great!
— According to ESPN’s Chad Ford, four of the 13 projected lottery teams would take Nerlens Noel with the first pick in this year’s NBA draft. Still think he’s coming back?
— And as Mrs. Tyler pointed out earlier today, Kentucky is no longer in Joe Lunardi’s Last Four In. Mr. Bracketology moved Kentucky up to a regular, normal, uncategorized tournament team. Lunardi’s new bracket projection will be released tomorrow.
— Matt Jones and Ryan Lemond were at Homerun Burgers in Louisville for this morning’s radio show. Have a listen as they recap the win over Mississippi State and preview the rest of the season, including Kentucky’s chances to win the SEC. [TalkRadio1080.com]
