UK’s lone fall signee, Stacey Poole, recently began a new high school basketball season at The Providence School. After his first preseason game this past Friday, he took some time out to discuss his plans for the upcoming season, how he plans on improving his game and why he chose UK as his college destination. Here’s some of the highlights from my interview with Stacey Poole:
DR: Your first game was tonight, a preseason game, how did you do?
Stacey Poole: Well, ya know, I did well. We came out with the win. I just made my players better around me and we came out with the win. We ended up winning by thirty-something. It was seventy-something to forty-something.
DR: Can you talk a little bit about why you chose UK?
Stacey Poole: I chose UK because I know it would make me better for what’s my goal in life and that’s to be in the league. I know Coach Cal will put me in the right situation if I come in and work hard. I feel like he’ll give me a better shot at doing that. It’s just a good program. It’s a historic school with basketball and I just feel comfortable playing there so that’s why I chose Kentucky.
DR: What are some of your personal goals for the high school season this year?
Stacey Poole: Just to help my team win and try not to lose as many as like five games and just go out with a bang and win the state championship.
DR: What are some of the things that UK’s coaches have asked you to work on with your game and what are you doing to improve in those areas?
Stacey Poole: The question was can I shoot from outside the perimeter. Can I get better at that. Right now the jumper is looking good. I was hitting the jumper tonight. I’ve been working on that. Coach is just saying, ya know, stay competitive. They like my defense and they like my competitiveness. They just like my aggression and how I finish at the basket so I just got to keep working on those skills and working on that outside perimeter shot but that’s going good right now. I’m feeling it. Everything is falling in place and that’s basically what I’m doing right now.
DR: How do you see yourself in the dribble drive offense? How do you see yourself being utilized and what position do you see yourself playing?
Stacey Poole: I think I can play all spots, like in the corner of the dribble drive, when the point guard is coming down and my man is drawn, he can kick out and I can hit that shot or I can play the point spot in the dribble drive because I can finish well. Basically anywhere he puts me I can play. There’s no specific spot that he can put me at. I can play all the positions.
DR: Talk about your college goals. What would you like to get out of college both on and off the court?
Stacey Poole: Just that college experience. My dad talks about it all the time just to go out there and enjoy yourself. Stay focused while you’re there. You know, I don’t know how many years I’ll be there. I don’t know if I’ll stay one, two, three or four but just stay in the college life and just enjoy it. Get my books because my parents preach to me to keep up with my grades and stuff like that. On the court, you know, I wanna win the national title. That’s my goal.
DR: Lastly, is there anything that you would like to say to the UK fans or that you would like us to pass onto them?
Stacey Poole: I’m ready to come up. I’m ready to play and show you all what I have. I just thank you for the support and I’m glad to be a Kentucky Wildcat.
