Spring football update

(Photo UK Athletics)

With so much basketball news popping up yesterday, and Calipari’s trophy tour across Kentucky continuing, we pulled a Louisville media here at KSR and completely ignored the spring football notes. Thankfully the fine people from WYMT did not, and they filled us in on what Joker Phillips called the “best practice of the spring,” on Friday.

Phillips said he was extremely pleased with the energy level of practice and thinks having a large crowd observe practice — UK football hosted part of its yearly coaching clinic at practice this morning — helped get the players more “amped” and focused.

Phillips called it a “really good, upbeat practice.” Certainly welcome words coming from the coach, as fans around the Bluegrass wonder what kind of team we’ll see this coming season. Plenty of young talent to build around, but will that young talent be able to keep up in the SEC?

The team had their Saturday practice this morning and Kyle Piercy from Bleed Blue Kentucky was there. He said offensive coordinator Randy Sander commented on running back Josh Clemons’ number change from 20 to 21, saying, “Maybe the zero made him look fat.”

Funny stuff, Randy. I like your style.

The Blue/White Game is a week from today at Commonwealth Stadium at 6 o’clock.

Who knows, maybe Randall Cobb has a year of eligibility left! Or maybe that’s me just me being a wishful thinker.

the problem with any football report is that it’s always positive. no matter what. fans would believe in & respect him a lot more if he would just come out & say “we need to improve a lot” or “guys have to get better” or “we have so much to work on” rather than telling us the team had an “upbeat pratice”.
don’t believe me? listen to nick saban or urban meyer interview.

“Looking better every day”…..”Best practice so far”….”I’m seeing some promising things”…..”WR’s starting to get better”…..”defense is playing faster”…..blah blah blah. Its like the movie groundhog day, same old crap recycled every year. Reminds me of when Tubby used to just glow about the “practice legends” and how they were finally gonna make an impact in the game. Remember all those guys that couldnt miss a 3 and were doing 360 degree windmill dunks…..yeah yeah yeah.

What’s he going to say considering so many are abandoning the ship? Let’s get through this season and move on. Oh, and let’s actually spend money on better facilities. MB has made some very good decisions, but I’m not sure the man knows we have a football program too. Get rid of Joker, spend some money, and let’s see what happens. This formula isn’t working.

I wonder if they will bring out the 2012 Basketball trophy during a timeout at Commonwealth this season. Then again, Wiltjer will be the only one who played in the games, but still.

Look I’m a huge Kentucky football fan. And I would like to say something to all you Debbie downers. If you are not with this team then shut up and just read the basketball posts. Some of us like Kentucky football .

14- I bet you said the same about BCG. Go ahead and bury your head. It is obvious the program is going in the wrong direction. If it doesn’t concern you, so be it. One can be concerned. It doesn’t mean he isn’t with the team. On the contrary.

    14. I like it too, it’s just hard to get excited knowing we’ve regressed back to the days when we couldn’t at least be competitve. I don’t blame the posters I blame the HC.

Look on the bright side; this is the beginning of Joker’s last year.

Maybe we’ll hear the same things next Spring, but the words won’t be coming from Joker’s pie hole.

I wish Joker and this team all the success in the world. However, this reminds me of all the BS about how Newton has found his game and all the other garbage we heard before last season started. We can’t allow our football program to become the butt of jokes like it was before Brooks. After coming off the NCAA tournament high, it’s hard to imagine suffering through another football season.

Joker is the pawn that is necessary for Big Blue Nation to be the fiercest, most passionate basketball fans in the world. We are enormous b-ball fans because we have zilch in football. Never have, never will. I’m actually ok with that. Just keep winning championships and being ranked #1 and I’m happy. Not Joker’s fault he is a loser. He is what he is.

Some of you guys here make no sense at all. Football has a higher learning curve than basketball so its not like your going to see instant results even if 5star recruits were brought in. It would still take time to learn the playbook, assimilate to sec speeds with lack of experience. Urban Meyer, coach of Ohio State is also going through a tough situation with developing an offense, considering he has experience coming back. There is no magic bullet that will change things overnight so why don’t some of you on here go shut your pie hole.

I’m not saying I completely agree with Joker. But to not even let the season start and say we suck is sending a bad message to the players. You can hate the coach that’s fine b. But the players deserve our support.

I try to be upbeat but unless we see dramatic improvement on the field it is just talk. Win the first game will yield a lot of good will. Lose the first one and it could avalanche.

24 i agrees its just some ky fans they cant help it they are football dumb even matt jones is. they dont get it they will complain about everything just like when hartline was qb alot fans were saying newton should be starting. they seen how that worked out and the football dumb people i guess thought the offense was going to be good last year. even tho we lost all of our offense playmaker the year before and dont think about that we had a freshman qb a oline that was banged up all season plus cleamons and collins got hurt and we still won 5 games just one or 2 less then any other year

upbeat?? yeah!! So Morgan Newton “has progressed and looks like a totally different QB than last year”? Our defense “has come a long way”?

We heard this last season and then barely beat WKU leading up to a HORRIBLE season sans the UT game. We were completely blown off the field by Vandy, and embarrassed by 50 by South Carolina. But hey, our practices are “upbeat”.
