In case you didn’t catch on after he dubbed his tenure as “Operation: Win”, Joker Phillips will apparently pack as many witty war references into his time as head coach as possible. Today, he met with reporters and told them that the unit formerly known as special teams will now be known as “Special Forces” and that Steve Ortmayer will now start wearing a Sgt. Slaughter onesie. Other notes:
– A lot of questions surrounding the QB position in the off-season and Joker said that Mike Hartline is back to 100% and , though the depth chart lists both Hartline and Morgan Newton, he would love to have a clear-cut #1 starter when spring practice ends. Joker also said that the quarterbacks will only be available to the media on Saturdays. He also reiterated how important it was to be able to pass the ball this year.
– A couple of position moves were made, which Joker said were all made to give the team more speed across the board. Chandler Burden has moved to left tackle from defensive end and Greg Meisner, who has battled injuries since Day 1 at UK, will also move from the defensive line and play fullback, along with Moncell Allen. Matt “Don’t Call Me Will” Lentz is at outside linebacker and Dakotah Tyler will play safety after some thought he might play running back.
– As of now, Nick Melillo is listed as the starting tight end. Melillo is a junior transfer from Lindenwood University.
– On the defensive side of the ball, the emphasis will be on finding a way to get more stops on third down. Anyone who has watched Kentucky football in the last 50 years has to be happy with that.
And, on a completely unrelated note, don’t forget to watch our buddy Bomani Jones on Outside the Lines today at 3pm. Mr. Jones will be talking about Duke and North Carolina basketball.
