For all of the recruits who might have been thinking about giving a big California howdy to the NCAA and going overseas, the latest news on the Jeremy Tyler front should rattle a few cages. Amateur basketball pimp Sonny Vaccarro proudly announced today that Tyler signed with Maccabi Haifa in Israel for…..$140,000. Hmmm. Really?
For a guy who has an infinite ceiling in terms of earning potential and talent over the course of his career, the best money he could find is about one-tenth of what Brandon Jennings got last year? And, when you factor in that he’ll likely take the draft hit that Jennings did for playing overseas instead of against America’s finest, this Tyler thing doesn’t look so hot after all. Using a highly sofisticated earnings calculator based on my fingers and mental guesses, I’m thinking Tyler could have just potentially impacted his career earnings by the tens of millions.
This little blurb in the back of the paper might be the first fairly significant victory for the NCAA in this “prep star goes overseas” phenomenon. And, as a school recruiting the best of the best, this has to be seen as somewhat of a victory for the Cats. Maybe?
Of course, the kid is still making WAY more than me next year. Oh well…
