Space Group’s #Free Rupp Presentation

free-rupp

Check out Space Group’s 114-page public meeting presentation from last week’s meeting in Lexington. It’s basically just a bunch of pictures but it’s proof that there is work being done outside of Microsoft Paint.

You won’t find any groundbreaking insight or information in the link. It’s still pretty neat to scroll through, though — if you like pictures.

Go Cats.

I dont understand why they want to #freerupp? I guess it would make people go straight to the game and not hang out and shop before the game.

This has to be the biggest waste of money; they keep trying to distract us by showing us stuff we don’t care about. They are obviously sitting on the designs of the inside of a renovated Rupp for a reason. They have to be terrified of showing us something they know we’re not going to like, and their going to try shoving it down our throats.

As an architecture student, this is very ‘architecture’ of them, wanting to make their own ideal city not just renovate Rupp. 8, they’re not sitting on designs, they might not even have any. They’ve probably just put a great deal of work researching how to remake downtown and not just put suites in, whether they need to or not.

It seems like they are wanting funding for other things downtown, and they know they need to include Rupp in some capacity to have a chance to get the funding.

Can someone explain what’s going on on pages 94-97? are those just ideas of what they want to do, or is this going to be like a 3 phase project? Seems like a waste of money to build a sports park just to replace it with retail and housing…

Can’t wait to see this “Keeneland style” parking in the grass. Especially during UK games when snow is on the ground. Sounds like some awesome mud bogging after the games, maybe the city will have a couple of full time dozers for hire to pull the cars out.

they did the same thing in greenville, sc and it changed the city so much for the better http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/publicroads/11mayjun/05.cfm

opening the town branch creek would be doing the same thing and would make downtown lexington absolutely amazing just like downtown greenville, sc. ask anyone about downtown greenville and they will say its beautiful and absolutely amazing

I want a New/Looks-New Rupp as my #1 desire, but the Town Branch creek / Central Park idea is my #1-A. Would love to make Downtown Lexington as nice as other cities its size! We have an opportunity that few cities ever get … the chance to re-open the Town Branch, reinvent a large area near the center of Downtown, and use currently “empty” space (parking lots, etc.) to make a park-like setting. With a New/Renovated Rupp in the middle of it, Downtown Lexington would be amazing!

I liked the idea of the underground parking lot that holds about 1000, more cars than what it now holds, but they just need to build a arena on top of that then just take a huge elevator up from the parking garage right into rupp!!! and make it the greatest areana ever built, dont forget that!!!

As an architect and designer, I’m very happy to see the ideas coming forth for the renovation of not only Rupp Arena but the surrounding areas. I’m even more happy to see the people on here getting behind it. This is a great opportunity to revitalize downtown Lexington. Let’s hope it happens and the new Rupp becomes the crown jewel.
