South Carolina Reporter says Stephen Johnson started handshake-gate

Last night, controversy struck when the South Carolina Gamecocks refused to shake hands with Kentucky players at the pre-game coin flip.

Mark Stoops and several players commented after the game, saying they used it as motivation going into the contest.

“They don’t shake our hands to start,” Stoops said. “I’ve never seen that, the captains don’t shake our hands. They wanted to go at it, but we were ready, too.”

Stephen Johnson even poked fun at the incident afterward.

This is the picture he referenced in the tweet, tongue out and all.

According to South Carolina sideline reporter Langston Moore, it may have been Johnson that sparked the pregame tension, not the Cocks.

Read this excerpt from an article on the incident by the Post and Courier’s

“Both captains approached, (Stephen) Johnson was mouthing something to D.J. Smith, I think. It was too loud to hear at who, exactly,” Moore said. “Because D.J. seemed kind of shocked that Johnson was talking to him.”

Johnson, Nick Haynes, Mike Edwards and Courtney Love met Smith, Hayden Hurst, D.J. Wonnum and Deebo Samuel at midfield.

“Number 68 (Haynes) from Kentucky extended his hand to Deebo,” Moore said. “At that point Deebo wasn’t even looking at No. 68 with his hand extended because of Johnson’s trash talk, and that’s when players started the chest-bumping/trash-talk and the refs stepped in. Flipped the coin.”

There was no attempt to shake hands after the coin flip.

“Nah, it was over at that point,” Moore said. “The other captains sized each other up briefly but that ended it.”

Here are Moore’s tweets in response to Kentucky’s claims:

This is just one guy’s recollection of the event, but it’s very interesting nonetheless.

Regardless, I am always #TeamStephenJohnson.

Why does it matter? We won. Also, SJ isn’t one to talk trash without a cause, are we sure a SC player didn’t actually cause the whole thing

I love it. Johnson is like Booker in the way he is low-key a huge trash talker and has an attitude about him on the field.

Funny this is what they are talking about after losing 4 straight to UK. I guess Bentley didn’t flop either. Lol. Losers

I call bs. If no one could hear what sj was saying, how can you assume he was talking trash? How could you even assume he was talking to a usc player at all? This is a butthurt writer throwing our team under the bus bc his no class players were disrespectful and lost.

Spin it how you want, Langston….you got your butt kicked at home in front of 80,000 fans dressed in black—which was quite appropriate.

82K fan and TV, yet no videos of the coin flip? I was curious to see this. Also Langston Moore is a former South Carolina player, that is relevant info. Perhaps slanted view aye?

He’s probably right, but who cares? We won, 4 straight. Deal with it.

If true, this only makes S.C. look even worse. If someone disrespects you, on your own turf even, you do what it takes to shut them up. SJ made their defense look like a JV squad most of the night, so maybe he just backed up his pre-game “talk”.

I might believe that SJ started it but the flop by the SC qb kinda killed their credibility.
