The venerable Jody Demling brings us this tidbit about the son of former Cat star Dirk Minniefield (my dad’s ears just perked up), Darin, who will be a sophomore in the fall and is developing into a promising recruit.
Demling spoke to the Minniefields at last week’s NBA Players’ Association Top-100 camp about his game, his dad and the Cats. Here’s what he had to say about each:
On his game compared to his dad:
“I watched all of his tapes and we are the same kind of players with athleticism and quickness,” the younger Minniefield said. “But I think I am a little better distributor of the ball than he was and maybe even a little better shooter.”
On having an NBA father:
“To have an NBA dad, someone who played the game and the same position is great for me,” he said. “He’s always telling me what to do and what not too do.”
On his interest in the Cats:
“I really didn’t like Kentucky until (John) Calipari came,” he said. “But he’s a guy that I have always wanted to play for because of his style.”
According to Demling, Darin has already heard from Kentucky and Texas, but this summer is an opportunity for him to really make a name for himself. Here’s to hoping he turns out to be even better than his all-time UK assist leader dad and, if that’s the case, that he takes a serious look at the Blue and White.
