Some SEC Media Day Notes

Some notes from the circus in Birmingham

— It came out this morning that it was Steve Spurrier who didnt vote Tim Tebow as the All SEC quarterback…well sort of. Spurrier’s ballot was the one leaving him off, although Steve said that he was not the one who filled it out, his Director of Operations did. That of course raises the question of why we call these polls “Coaches polls” (nearly all have others do it), and it leads to questions of whether Spurrier actually is letting someone else take the sword for his action. Regardless, I kind of love it, and it will make the game this year a little more heated.

— The Cats were picked last in the SEC East by the media, even behind Vanderbilt. This continues to be a common occurrence, and I would have certainly put them fifth. However it will give Rich Brooks extra motivation to fire up a team that he says is better than the team he put on the field last year.

Trevard Lindley was named First Team All SEC for this season and Micah Johnson and Zipp Duncan were both put on the second team by the SEC media.

— I find it very interesting to read the outrage this morning by columnists that I otherwise like (such as Tony Barnhart) about Clay Travis’s question to Tim Tebow yesterday. Clay is a friend of the site and now writes for AOL Fanhouse and he asked Tebow if he was still a virgin. Now one can debate whether this was appropriate or not, but the mainstream media of course does what it always does on issues like this. While decrying the inappropriateness of the question, they all LEAD their stories with it and link on Twitter to their takes. Why do they do this? Because they know people are (a) interested and (b) will read it. It is the same as Bill O Reilly saying the Erin Andrews video is shameful, while playing part of it in the background. They like the attention of the story, all while taking the moral high horse….mainstream media everyone!

— Finally, Tony Barnhart cant be all bad because he did tell Larry Vaught this quote: “Tennessee football is great, but it is not Kentucky basketball.” You redeemed yourself Tony.
