UK diving coach Mike Lyden passed away today at the age of 51 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lyden, the 1996 NCAA Women’s Diving Coach of the year, began coaching the Cats in 1993 after coming over from LSU and found great success during his time in Lexington. Under his tutelage, Kentucky garnered 49 All-American awards – including its first ever in 1994 – and it’s first National Championship in 2006. Lyden was also was named SEC Diving Coach of the Year nine times during his tenure in Lexington, most recently in 2007.
Lyden is survived by his wife, Emily, and his three kids, Jessica, Jack and Brittany. The UK Athletic Department is planning a memorial event in his honor.
