Its late and its Friday night, so some quick hitters….
— Today John Calipari visited Eric Bledsoe and then flew to New York, the site of tomorrow’s Jordan Classic. The decision to visit Bledsoe personally says to me that he is either trying to sell Bledsoe on coming to UK along with John Wall or that he has some hesitation as to whether Wall will actually end up at UK. Either way, I like the decision as Bledsoe is a stud. The Jordan Classic on Saturday night is where the recruiting world will be focused and with Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Xavier Henry and Daniel Orton all there, I am glad Calipari is as well.
— There has been some scuttlebutt that with today’s hire of Glenn Cyprien, the Daniel Orton saga may continue. The reason Orton originally ended up a commitment to UK was his family’s strong relationship with Cyprien and there is no doubt that when he left Kentucky, so left the Ortons’ ties. However, going to Kentucky and going to play for a new coach in Memphis are very different things and at this point, we have seen nothing but speculation on the topic. It will however be interesting to see what happens if Memphis becomes a player for Orton….would the time Cyprien spent as a Coach with no home, which included a visit with Orton and his family at the Derby Classic, be the basis for his move to move to Memphis? IF so, some folks at Kentucky would not be pleased at all.
— Speculation has increased that the Xavier Henry decision will come within the next couple of days. I spoke with someone today who told me that as of Wednesday, the plan was for Henry to announce after the game. This however could have changed, as reports came out this afternoon that Henry’s mother wanted her son to go to Kansas. These are however at this time, just rumors and as of now all we know is that KU and UK are the two final choices. I expect no movement on the issue until the game at the earliest, but Sunday and/or Monday, could be the day we find out the final result. Stay tuned….
— It looks as if little Pitino may be going to Florida to join Billy Donovan’s staff. Little Pitino has done a good job at UL and is said to be a solid recruiter, but the move to Florida will be to solidify his credentials away from his father.
— Finally, it bears mentioning that last night on the Calipari call-in show, he said that UK had no business playing any team ranked lower than 250 in the RPI, which is music to my ears. One of the things Tubby knew is that those games kill your RPI ranking and UK scheduled five such games last year….thus putting their RPI dangerously low. Calipari said that no games against such teams will happen in the future absent special circumstances like a former player as a Coach there. Great decision.
We will have news from the Spring Game this afternoon and anything on Henry as it may break. I will likely be headed to Keeneland to see the future Fusaichi Pegasus in action, so the posts may not be as fast and furious…..but hang in there and the news will come…..
