Doesn’t that send a little chill down your spine?
Now imagine if everybody in Rupp was singing it during one of the timeouts.
If I remember correctly — I haven’t been to a basketball game since last season — the pep band will let loose on an extended version of “On, On, U of K” once in the game. During the first round of the chorus the band plays. During the second chorus most of the band will sing the lyrics. The third and final chorus has the band playing in full ensemble again.
Instead of just clapping along, why not sing along on the second and third choruses? The fight song isn’t very long or overtly complex. You’re not going to be required to hold long notes, like in My Old Kentucky Home.
For those of you heading to the game on Tuesday, consider singing the fight song — at least during that extended sing-along time instigated by the Pep Band. Don’t know the lyrics? Here, I’ll risk the copyright warning by cutting-and-pasting:
On, on, U of K, we are right for the fight today,
Hold that ball and hit that line;
Ev’ry Wildcat star will shine;
We’ll fight, fight, fight, for the blue and white
As we roll to that goal, Varsity,
And we’ll kick, pass and run, ’til the battle is won,
And we’ll bring home the victory.
